4 Important Note The Statistical report refers to the injuries / Fatalities on the public roads & streets due to road crashes and brought to five major trauma Centers of Karachi, namely Jinnah Post graduate Medical Centre, Civil Hospital Karachi, Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Liaquat National & Aga Khan University Hospital. The Statistical Report refers to the period Year The road trauma data not captured in the five reporting hospitals but confirmed by Ambulance Services & Police data record is included. Fatal means: All those who die a) At the crash site b) While being transferred to tertiary care hospital or in the trauma centre c) causing death within 30 days after being admitted in the reporting hospital. Serious Injury means: An injury for which a person is detained in tertiary care hospital as an admitted patient or any of the injury judged to be severe & life threatening. 4

5 Major Findings 2011 Vs 2010 In 2011, Road casualties received in five reporting tertiary care hospitals of Karachi running under Road Trauma surveillance system of Road Traffic Injury Research & Prevention Centre. In 2011, 1161 Road fatalities reported, 5% reduction is observed when compared with 2010 road fatalities. Nearly 6800 Pedestrians casualties reported which is 12% less as compared to the previous year, overall Pedestrians fatality also decreased 20% compared with the previous year 2010, highlighting KMC / City Administration & Media good efforts. Nearly Rider / pillion rider injuries reported in 2011, Rider / pillion rider overall severity has jumped 13% while its fatalities has seen 15% increase when compared with Traffic Police Enforcement of Helmets, tackling youth & Under age riding, Upgrading / reforming licensing system on modern lines, Implementation of DRL (Day time running lights), Motorcycle Side Mirrors & Speed Management on the major corridors is the need of the hour. More than 3000 Passengers casualties reported in 2011, overall severity of the passengers category has dipped 16%, while its fatalities has seen 15% drop when compared with Nearly 900 Drivers (of or more than 4 wheelers) reported, overall severity decreased 11% while fatality reduction of 16% is observed. Nearly (13000) Road Casualties reported at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, followed by Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (10000), Civil Hospital Karachi (7600), Aga Khan University Hospital & Liaquat National Hospital received / captured less than 1000 road injuries. Catchment / Capturing Area of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital saw an increasing trend of overall injury & fatalities. More than 5000 Road Casualties were brought by Edhi Ambulance Service, followed by Aman foundation (2200), Chippa Ambulance (2300) to the reporting tertiary care hospitals. 5

6 In comparison with the year 2010, Aman foundation Ambulance Service improved 40%, followed by Edhi Ambulance (20%), Chippa Ambulance Service has dropped 35% in their share of bringing road trauma casualties to the reporting tertiary care hospitals. About 75% of the Road fatalities occurred due to the injuries pertaining to Head, Neck & Face Nearly 10% increase has been observed in the Non Wearing Helmets of Riders Two Wheeler Motorcycle involvement in the road crashes of Karachi has seen 35% increase in fatality and 13% in injury road crashes when compared with Public Transportation & Heavy Goods Vehicles has seen the reduction of 11% & 18% respectively when compared with Three wheeler (Auto Rickshaw category) involvement has seen 33% increase in fatality while injury involvement of Rickshaw category increased by 15% in comparison of Untrained, non professional, Unlicensed Drivers & Under age rickshaw drivers observed in the city, RTIR&PC suggests for the registration & Training of these drivers. Of Age group years more than 10% increase in fatality is observed, showing an upward trend of Adventurous / Underage riding of the youth. In 2011 nearly 4000 Children of age 15 or less suffered from the road crashes. Nearly 60 Pedestrians of age group less than 15 Years died due to road crash in 2011 however the trend is decreasing, 32% less when compared with Nearly youth of age between years got involved in road crashes out of which nearly 300 expired in the crash. Nearly 1000 people of age group 60 Years or more were involved in road crashes. National Highway (Urban Section) remained the highest fatality prone road. National Highway, Korangi Road, Shahrah e Faisal, Super Highway (Urban Section), Korangi Industrial Area road where the road fatalities remained more than 50. 6

7 Korangi Industrial Area Road, Chaudary Fazal Ellahi Road, Manghopir Road & Sher Shah Suri road were the major arterials where with the previous year the fatality jumped more than 100%. Korangi Town remained the Highest Fatality Town due to high crashes on Korangi Industrial Area road & Korangi Road. The Fatality here jumped to 120% in comparison with
