2 Foreword For the professional application of floor-cleaning machines in public and commercial buildings (e.g. hospitals, railway stations, airports, sports facilities and supermarkets), the input from manufacturers of machines shall be considered regarding the nature of floors and the stress involved. In practice, the following main effects are noticeable in regard to the stress that flooring and sub-structure undergo: Point load of wheels Nature of floor and substructure Kind of tyre equipment Speed of machinery Building operators and engineers shall consider the main effects mentioned above as well as the application instructions from the manufacturers relating to the machinery in question. Introduction This document has been prepared by the Technical Committee of the European Cleaning Machines Association EUnited Cleaning, which represents the leading European manufacturers of commercial cleaning machines. I.e., by this Technical Recommendation the European cleaning machines industry defines requirements and recommends measures supplemental to existing European and international standards. In preparing this document, the spirit of all relevant safety standards was considered, as was the state of the art of the cleaning machines that fulfil them. This Technical Recommendation is designed to assist building operators and engineers in choosing suitable cleaning machines in accordance with the characteristics of the floors involved. 1 Scope This document includes application instructions and provides methods for the evaluation of the mean pressure of each wheel as well as the working load. This data is to be used to prevent damage to flooring and substructure by cleaning machines within the scope of these international standards: IEC SC 61J Electrical motor-operated cleaning appliances for commercial use and CEN TC 197/SC 1/WG 1 High pressure cleaner (see clause 2), for use in residential, commercial, light-industry and industrial environments, within the single European market. Mean pressure of wheels The mean static pressure of each wheel is defined by the wheel load (as a function of load, weight of persons, equipment, batteries, etc.) and the footprint of the wheel (as a function of tyre equipment (tread), dimensioning, material, etc.).

4 Weight of the operable machine Net weight of the machine Weight of water in the filled fresh-water tank Weight of the operator (75 kg for ride-on machines) Weight of the battery, where one exists Weight of the fuel tank, where one exists (filled to 90%) Weight of the attachment components (canopy, front end, etc.) 4 Evaluation of mean wheel pressure The mean pressure of each wheel is to be calculated with the following formula: F wheel p wheel = A wheel p wheel = mean pressure of wheel [N/mm²] F wheel = wheel load [N] A wheel = footprint of wheel [mm²] = L1 x L2 and for double castors respectively: A Rad = L1 eff x L2 The wheel load can be calculated by measuring each wheel of the operable machine. The allocation of weight to each wheel is affected by the position of the equipment in contact with the floor. This allocation shall be determined in both the transport and one defined operation position: Castor(s) in driving direction Squeegee and/or brush(es) / equipment set to the minimum floor pressure. The maximum value due to this determination has to be reported (see clause 6). Wheel pressure

5 The footprint of the wheel can be calculated by the so-called paper method with an operable machine (see above). For this, sheets of paper 1 are slid to the footprint on all of the four sides (see Figure 1 and Figure 2), the footprint now can be measured on the floor. In the case of air-filled wheels, the manufacturer s default air pressure shall be adjusted and de clared. Treads are not considered. Burrs of solid wheels shall be eliminated before measurement. This warrants a paper thickness of 100 ± 4µm, which will result in sufficiently accurate measurements. Footprint

6 5 Evaluation of the working load The working load is a function of the weight of the operable machine in relation to the outer outline of the machine. The outer outline is the area calculated based on the dimensions of greatest length and greatest width of the machine in position of transport, measured using the fixed components as projected onto the floor, and additional area for the operator and for the moving of the machine. For walk-behind machines, the area used by the operator (greatest width x 0.5m) or the area of the sulky shall be added to this projection. 7 7 Application instructions The manner of driving shall conform to the local situation. Therefore, the speed in curves shall be reduced. The equipment of the machine declared in the data sheet must not be changed subsequently (e.g. by bigger batteries, another kind of tyre equipment, etc.). The main effects of stress to flooring and substructure are: Point load of wheels (maximum medium pressure of wheel pursuant to paragraph 4) Differences in the nature of floor and substructure The kind of tyre equipment used (number of wheels, double-castors/twin tyres, tyre material) Machine speed and acceleration Annex The annex contains a sample data sheet showing the specifications listed in paragraph 6.
