ANSI/SVIA Standard ANSI facilitates the development of American National Standards through accreditation of procedures used by standards developers and approval of standards SVIA has been ANSI-accredited since
ANSI/SVIA Standard Voluntary Standards ANSI/SVIA ANSI/SVIA Mandatory Standards ANSI/SVIA (Nov. 2008) Revised Youth Model Categories New Transitional Model ANSI/SVIA (Feb. 2012) 7
ATV ROPS/CPD CPSC and others repeatedly have concluded that ROPS/CPDs are inappropriate for ATVs Benefits of ROPS/CPDs have not been scientifically proven ROPS/CPDs likely would cause many unintended consequences, including new safety risks 8
CPSC Incident Data Analyses 92% of ATV fatalities involve at least one warned against behavior 1 93% of youth fatalities involve riding an adult size ATV 2 1 Heiden, Edward J., Comments on CPSC ANPR on ATV Safety, Dec. 8, 2005 (analyzing CPSC IDI reports on ATV fatalities) 2 Ingle, Robin L., Analysis of ATV-Related Fatality Data for CPSC Petition CP 02-4/HP 02-1, Dec. 2, 2003 at 8-9 (analyzing youth fatalities with known engine size) 9
Golden Rules of ATV Safety Always wear a DOT-compliant helmet, goggles, long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots, and gloves. Never ride on paved roads except to cross when done safely and permitted by law - another vehicle could hit you. ATVs are designed to be operated offhighway. Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Never carry a passenger on a singlerider ATV, and no more than one passenger on an ATV specifically designed for two people. Ride an ATV that's right for your age. Supervise riders younger than 16; ATVs are not toys. Ride only on designated trails and at a safe speed. Take a hands-on ATV RiderCourse and the free online E-Course. Visit ATVSafety.org or call
Model State Legislation Requires approved helmet and eye protection Prohibits carrying passengers on single-rider ATVs Prohibits youth on adult-size ATVs; operators under 16 must ride youth model appropriate for their age Requires adult supervision for children under age 16 Requires ATV operators on public land to have safety certificates Prohibits operation on public roads 11

Progress in Safety Estimated Injuries* Statistically significant decline ( ) Change in trend direction Youth Injuries* 27% decline ( ) While there continue to be too many serious ATV incidents, mostly occurring from riding improperly, we are gratified that the longtime commitment of the ATV Safety Institute s member companies to rider education, parental supervision, and state legislation has contributed to a 50 percent reduction in injury risk and a continuing decline in fatality risk ATV Safety Institute, Mar. 4,
