1 DRAFT -- Parking Situation Current Status During Sept & Oct 009 members of P&Z walked much of the Town to informally survey the on-street parking situation in Dewey. This unofficial survey includes 14 of the 0 east-west oriented roads, most of Bayard and two of the small north-south oriented streets by the Bay. The ocean-block of McKinley and 6 of the streets in the mid-town/north-end were not surveyed. This report summarizes the data collected, related to: Span -- the extent of contiguous open space between clearly marked driveway entrances, fire hydrants and/or intersections Potential Spaces -- an estimate of the number of on-street parking spaces that would be available if every property complied with the old zoning code's driveway entrance requirements (one 0' or two 10' entrance(s)) and all impediments to on-street parking were moved/removed (e.g., brush, trash, blocks and posts, mailboxes) Spaces Lost -- an estimate of the number of spaces in each span that are lost to public on-street parking due to impediments in the right of way, poorly- or improperly-marked driveway entrances, and/or "private parking" signs Public Spaces -- an estimate of the apparent number of on-street parking spaces available to the public This survey assumes a "parking space" to be 9' x 18' (as per code for commercial parking lots). During the survey it was noted that many cars in Town qualify as "compact" or "sub-compact", and that additional on-street spaces would be gained if marked "compact only" or "sub-compact only". During the course of this survey it was noted that 1) a small number of residences and businesses have marked areas of the public right of way as being restricted for "private parking", and ) a small number of residential properties have been developed in a manner that does not facilitate appropriate off-street parking to meet even some minimal needs of the residents. Summary: Potential Spaces (est) 400 potential on street spaces Spaces Lost (est) 670 representing 7% wastage Public Spaces (est) 1730 easy to regain 5 about 1/3 of wastage through marking & clearing new spaces 45 better use of angled and perpendicular parking Page 1
