1 SRM VERTICAL STABILIZER (FIN) STRUCTURAL IDENTIFICATION 1. General This section identifies the skin panels and structural components of the vertical stabilier. Details are given of specific location; material specifications and related commercial designations; material thicknesses, limits of allowable damage, and approved repairs. 2. Construction The fin is of conventional all metal construction with L/E, front and rear spars positioned at 7%, % and % chord respectively. The L/E spar consists of 2024T3 flat webs with 2024T3510 T section booms. The front and rear spar consists of 2024T3 flat webs and 2024T3510 boom angles. These spars are extended and locally reinforced with 7075T351 fail safe booms for attachment to the sloping bulkheads within the fuselage body. The rear spar stops at rib 11 to cater for the rudder horn but structural continuity is obtained through a channel section sub spar which continues stringers 4 between rib 11 and end rib. Ribs are identified by a numbering system and are positioned either horiontally or at 90 to the front spar and are intercostal with the spars. Except for the root rib, which has 2024T3 flat webs with boom angles forward and 2024T3510 boom angles aft of front spar, ribs are of material and consist of flanged diaphragms and stiffeners with cutouts and anticrack angles at stringer locations. Ribs 4 and 10 are reinforced with 7075T7351 foot fittings to carry the 7075T7351 fail safe hinge brackets which bolt to the rear spar. Rib 13 and tip rib have full aerofoil section and support the Kevlar fin tip. Stringers are material and are tophat section with the exception of stringer 1, 4 and 5 which have a 'Z' section above rib 5. Side skins are chemietched 2024T3 with a joint along rib 5 and the leading edge skin is heavy gauge 2024T3 as a protection against bird strike. The main fore and aft shear loads are transmitted to the fuselage through A K.S.I. shear pin housed in 7075T7351 retainer. The shrouds are of Kevlar construction supported with channels. 3. Structural Identification The following pages contain diagrams and text to define the components, skin materials and thicknesses, that comprise the vertical stabiliser. Page 1

Reference must also be made to CHAPTER 51, for further information regarding structural damage and repair practices of a general nature. It is to be noted that due to the similarity in construction of the Vertical and Horiontal Stabilisers, some of the approved repairs are applicable to both assemblies. CAUTION: THESE REPAIRS MAY AFFECT THE FATIGUE CRITICAL BASELINE STRUCTURE. REFER TO FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON FCBS AND PROCEDURES TO BE FOLLOWED, PRIOR TO INCORPORATING ANY OF THESE REPAIRS. 2.
