BR111 and Bxf Expert-Line Operation Instructions

Preface: We are happy to present you another Expert Line locomotive: the BR111 and the driving trailer Bxf. As we did with our first Expert Line locomotive the BR143; we will try to make virtual railroading with the Railworks Trainsimulator and this package even more interesting. This package comes with the modern electric locomotive BR111, Bxf driving trailer, Bx 2 nd class coaches and ABx 1 st / 2 nd class composite coaches. The BR111 and Bxf driving trailer come with enhanced operating possibilities and performance physics closer to reality than standard Railworks rolling stock. The BR111 uses a notched regulator to control the engine power. Misuse will cause malfunctions. The well known functions like TAV, PZB and SiFa, time delayed wipers; and individually controllable pantographs from the BR143 Expert Line are used in these vehicles too. Please make yourself familiar with these instructions and read them completely in order to operate these vehicles without any problems. If you have any questions, requests, suggestions or criticism just contact us! We wish you much fun and a pleasant journey with this package. virtualrailroads Team Ulf Freudenreich und Maik Goltz Seite 2

Tips and Hints: With the purchase of virtual railroads DB BR111 you will receive a vehicle for RailWorks 3 that mirrors very closely the operation and performance of the real Deutsche Bahn locomotive within the linits of the host simulator. Accordingly, it is important to spend a certain amount of time learning how to operate the locomotive. Please read these instructions carefully. Important notes for operating: The BR111 from virtual Railroads was developed to be used in Expert Mode in Railworks 3. The additional functions described in this manual are ONLY be available in Expert Mode! Although it was not possible to operate the BR143 with the F4 panel, the BR111 can be operated in this way. We would however suggest using the Keyboard to drive the locomotive as it is much more precise. You can find the key layout at the end of this manual. To operate the locomotive you need to press different key combinations which could not all be accessed by switches in the cab. If you use the key combinations please make a short key press to avoid double input, except where otherwise indicated. This may cause malfunctions. In this manual we will only describe our own self defined keys. Standard keys like W / S for the reverser are not mentioned. Seite 4

BR111 / Vehicle Description: The BR111 is a four axle alternating current locomotive mostly used in Germany for passengers trains. The locomotive uses 28 step Thyristor technology. Starting service in 1974, 227 machines were built and are still in use today. Now the BR111 is mostly used for regional and S-Bahn traffic. The locomotive has Bo-Bo wheel arrangement. The regulator controls 28 notches which give the locomotive a maximum power of 3700 kw and a maximum speed of 160 km/h. The ABx, Bx and Bxf coaches are used for S-Bahn services here in Germany. The S-Bahn is a passenger commuter system for short distances. The coaches come in the liveries of the 80s. Overview of the Main features BR111 / Bxf: - Railworks 3 Features ( Raindrops, Lights ) - Prototypical driving performance during acceleration and braking - 28 notches for driving - Acoustic wheel slip, and wheelslide and warning display in the speedometer - (NEW) Monitoring of traction motor heating and cut-out when limits are exceeded - (NEW) Manually operated traction motor blower (FML) for cooling the traction motor, having an impact on the simulated engine performance and the heat generated. - Faults like electric malfunction and empty sandboxes - ZWS and ZDS ( Time Division Multiplex ) mode - SIFA und PZB90 - TAV Door control (only with included ABx, Bx and Bxf ) - ZZA (Destination Boards) - Individually controllable pantographs - vr Message Windows System - two-level Lights and Cab lights - realistic Sound (optimized for EAX Soundcards) - special AI Sound - optional Parameters for AI and Player Seite 5

Preparations Pantograph Keys: Shift+P / Ctrl+P 4 Positions: down/front/both/back Main Switch Keys: Ctrl+Z (On/Off) Making the BR111 ready: To make the BR111 ready for driving, some systems have to be switched on, and some switches need to be manipulated: Raise up the pantograph, switch on the Main Switch etc. The Main Switch ca only be switched on if a pantograph is raised up! Keys for making a single BR111 ready for driving: - Pantograph Front to Back = Shift+P ( Front Both Back ) - Pantograph Back to Front = Ctrl+P ( Both Front - Both down ) - Main Switch = Ctrl+Z (Toggle Switch On/Off) Getting ready to drive the Bxf in ZWS mode (Bxf + BR111 TDM Push-Pull Working / Zeitmultiplexe Wendezugsteuerung) To use the BR111 as a pushing locomotive for the Bxf driving trailer you need to setup ZWS mode. The driving trailer being used must support ZWS mode. Most off the rolling stock in Railworks do NOT support these functions; in this package included vehicles do! Please enter the cab of the Bxf driving trailer and switch on ZWS mode with Shift+9. If you successfully started ZWS mode, you should see three messages to the right telling you about the ZWS status. Press P to raise the pantograph and you will get another message to the right confirming the pantograph status. Switch on the Main Switch with keys Ctrl+Z and you are ready to drive the train. Seite 6

If you received any error messages when trying to enter ZWS mode please make sure that the locomotive is coupled to the train and that the loco is able to drive in ZWS mode. Keys for making the Bxf driving trailer ready for ZWS mode: - Switch ZWS mode On or Off = Shift+9 (Toggle Switch) - Pantograph = key P (the locomotive will automatically choose the right pantograph) - Main Switch = Ctrl+Z Getting ready to drive in ZDS mode (2 x BR111 TDM Top & Tail or Multiple Working / Zeitmultiplexe Doppeltraktionssteuerung): First off all a hint for the special conditions of ZDS mode: You can drive in ZDS mode without any problems when two BR111 are coupled together. Top & Tail positions are possible too, but keep in mind that the coupled vehicles between both BR111 need to support the vr Consist Message System. In this package included coaches Bx, ABx and Bxf do. ZDS mode is possible with a maximum of two locomotives in one train. If you would like to drive a train with more than two locomotives the additional locomotives function like a wagon. It is very important to use the correct sequence of keys to successfully start ZDS mode! Keys to use to make two BR111 ready for work in ZDS mode: - Raise its first pantograph up = Shift+P - Switch on ZDS and wait for the status message Shift+9 - Raise the pantograph on the other BR111 = Ctrl+Shift+P - Toggle the Main Switch on the first BR111 Ctrl+Z - Toggle the Main Switch on the second BR111 Ctrl+Shift+Z If you wish to switch locomotives in order to drive in the other direction, you must remember to switch off ZDS mode first and shut down the locomotives, otherwise you will get a ZDS error message. 8 Driving (BR111 und Bxf) Traction Effort Speedometer TAV Main Switch OFF E Brake Sifa PZB LMs Notch Display Important Tips for driving The BR111 and the Bxf driving trailer do NOT use a regulator you are familiar with from most other Railworks vehicles. The regulator in the cab is used to switch through 28 notches and has therefore four positions to control the 28 notches. The Notch Display located in the MFA under the speedometer shows you which of the 28 notches you are in. Regulator / Notch Controller: The BR111 is very easy to operate. The regulator works as a notch controller. It has four positions, from one to four these are: OFF DOWN DRIVE UP Very straightforward. Regulator / Notch Controller Keys: E / Q or A / D Seite 8

To operate the regulator / notch controller you have three options: You can operate the lever directly with the mouse, you can use the F4 panel or the keyboard. If you prefer to use the F4 panel keep in mind that the lever always switches back to DRIVE and can t be held in the up position. If you use the keyboard you can use keys A / D or E / Q. One key press moves the regulator / notch controller one position up or down. Keys for the Regulator / Notch Controller: - Regulator position one up = Keys A or E - Regulator position one down = Keys D or Q Regulator / Notch Controller positions: In the OFF ( 0 ) position nothing happens. Please switch to this position if you brake or if you got a fault of any kind. Switch to the next position DOWN ( Ab ) to run down through the notches, the regulator will remain in this position until moved again. You need to do that if you want to brake. Look for the notch display under the speedometer in the MFA; it shows you which notch is selected. If you want to use the brakes it should show 00. If you switched to position DOWN the regulator will rest in this position. Use the position DRIVE ( Fahren ) if you want to hold the notch and the power. Switching to position UP ( Auf ) will switch up the notches and accelerate the locomotive. Keep the key pressed to switch more than one notch up. Once the key is released the regulator will return to Drive. Tips for notching up: When you start driving use only the first one or two notches. Look for the Tractive Effort meter it should not show more than kn/fm. If you are driving a heavy train you need to move up more than two notches. In this case look for the ampere meter to the left it should not show more than 420 A. Ampere Meter When driving use the Regulator / Notch Controller to switch the notches for more or less power. Move the regulator from DRIVE to UP or DOWN position as required. Seite 9

Fast-Off: Never switch directly to the OFF position if the Notch Display does not show 00!! Only use this for emergency purposes, this is what is called a Fast-Off / Schnellaus. To let the notches run down from 28 to 0 you need 14 seconds; in some Situations you do not have that time. Traction Interlock: If you try to brake or you get a fault and the regulator / notch controller is not in OFF position and the notch display does not show 00 the regulator / notch controller will loose its function. It is possible to move the regulator / notch controller, but without any influence on the power and the notches. To reset the function all 4 levers ( Regulator, Train brake lever, Engine brake lever and ebrake lever ) need to be set to position 0 ( Zero ). This function will prevent damage to the locomotive, if you make an emergency brake application and try to switch the notches. Very important! The BR111 uses a notched power control system. If you need to brake, the notches MUST first be run down to 00! Otherwise you will damage the locomotive and get an electrical fault. Traction Motors and Traction Motors Blowers (FML) The traction motors in the locomotive heat up whilst the locomotive is under power. It is your job to prevent the traction motors from overheating. To do this the locomotive has special fans / blowers (FML) to cool down the traction motors. This list shows you how Traction Effort influences the heating: Traction Effort < 60kn < 2min. (without FML 12sek.) Traction Effort < 45kn < 15min. (without FML 90sek.) Traction Effort < 28kn permanent Traction Effort (without FML 3min.) If you go over these limits the locomotive will switch off automatically. If this has happened to you, you can switch on the locomotive as usual but now you should switch on the FML. Keys for the FML control: - FML on = key Shift+F - FML off = key Ctrl+F Seite 10

Traction Motor Blower / FML Switch Tip: if you trip the overheat protection let the locomotive coast without any power, with the blower turned on to cool down the motors. Brakes The train brake lever in the BR111 is connected to the e-brake lever (Rheostatic Brake). The train brake lever uses notches. If possible always use the train brake lever. If you want to stop, you should use notch 1 or 2 on the train brake lever. In most cases this will be enough brake force. Regulate the train brake lever carefully to prevent slipping. Too much slipping will shut down the locomotive and the e-brake will be inoperable. Train Brake key: ; / or NumPad + / - e-brake key:. /, To drive down a gradient use the e-brake lever to keep the allowed maximum speed. Do not use too much brake force to avoid slipping. Keep in mind: if you want to brake the notches of the regulator / notch controller must run down to 00 first!! Seite 11

Keys for braking: - Train Brake + = key ; or NumPad+ - Train Brake - = key or NumPad- - e-brake + = key. - e-brake - = key, - Engine Brake + = key [ - Engine Brake - = key ] Faults In real life there are a lot of possible faults that can occur when driving a locomotive. For this locomotive we are only using two. One is the electrical fault and the other one is empty sandboxes. Electrical Fault: If you forget to run down the notches when you try to brake you will always get an electrical fault. If this happens too much you will receive a message and the locomotive will shut down automatically. You will then have to wait a random time until to continue. Running out of Sand: If you are using sand without thinking about the how much you have, you will run out very soon, it is not in infinite supply! The locomotive itself will be still operational if this occurs but if you need sand there might be nothing left. You will get messages about the amount of the sand left. The sand containers will replenish when the locomotives stands still. Door control TAV The BR111 has a programmed door control that could be used with the passenger wagons included in this package ( ABx / Bx / Bxf ). To open the doors use the normal key T. The doors do not open at once! Each wagon has a time delay to make door opening more realistic. When T is pressed and the TAV control is activated you will see the TAV indicator on the cab control panel light up and hear a beep sound. The speed control is now blocked until the doors are closed. Closing the doors must be done with Ctrl+T or operating the indicated white switch. You will hear a Zp9 ( whistle ) when the doors can be closed. Doors will not be closed automatically; you must now press Ctrl+T to activate the door closing process. The TAV light will start flashing and you will hear a beep every second until all doors are closed. It will take up to 10 seconds for all the doors to be closed at which point the TAV light will stop blinking and remain off, and the beeping will cease. Seite 12

When the TAV light is off; all doors are closed and the speed control is no longer blocked. Doors Closing key: Ctrl+T ZZA (Destination Boards) The BR111 and the Bxf driving trailer are using self illuminated destination boards. Use the key 0 ( Zero ) Shift+0 to switch the destination boards. When pressing these keys you will see a message to the right with the position you are in and the appropriate text for this position. Seite 13

SIFA (Sicherheitsfahrschalter / Vigilance Alarm) The BR143 has a working Zeit-Zeit-Sifa ( Vigilance Alarm ) which could be activated or deactivated with Shift+7. The purpose of the SIFA is to keep the driver vigilant at all times and to allow the locomotive to come quickly and safely to a stop should the driver become incapacitated or otherwise not in proper control of the train. If you switched on the SIFA you have to press the space bar every 30 seconds to reset it. If you forget to reset the SIFA, the SIFA light will start glowing on the console to remind you to press the SIFA button. If you miss this again after 2 seconds you will hear a warning beep that will last for a further 2 seconds after which the train will begin emergency braking. If you are not inside the cab when driving the loco you won t get any warning about the SIFA status but remember that SIFA is still working! You will need to press the SIFA reset button outside the loco or it will eventually come to an emergency stop. PZB (Punktförmige Zugbeeinflussung / Automatic Train Protection & Control) / BETAVERSION The BR111 / Bxf have a realistic build in PZB90 System used in Germany for speed controlling trains. Note that this implementation of the system is in Beta and may exhibit errors from time to time. The PZB system also only works properly when the route you are driving on has been built with this in mind. There are some special magnets included in this package that must be placed on the route to interface to the systems within the locomotive. To switch on PZB use key Shift+8; to change the train mode use Ctrl+8. After switching on or changing the mode the PZB will start a selftest. PZB Befehl key: DEL PZB Frei key: End PZB Wachsam key: Page-Down (NumPad-Enter) To use the PZB operate with the keys - PZB Befehl / DEL - PZB Frei / END Seite 14

- PZB Wachsam / PageDown To use PZB Frei you have to press the key End a little longer to give the system the chance to recognize your key press. The PZB system only works properly when the route you are driving on supports PZB. For this you need special magnets which are included in this package. Overview of PZB 90 The PZB 90 system is used to ensure that trains are running at correct speeds in certain controlled sections (for example, leading up to signals) and also to ensure that no train can pass a signal at danger. There are three types of train controlled via the PZB system, these are described as: Zugart O Obere (Upper) Light trains / Passenger trains Zugart M Mittlere (Medium) Heavy trains / Freight trains Zugart U Untere (Lower) Very heavy trains / Freight trains When you enable PZB with Shift+8 it will start up ready for a Zugart O train. Zugart could be read in the vr Message window to the right in the cab. You can use Ctrl+8 to cycle between the train types until you have the one most appropriate for your train. The key differentiators are the maximum speed and the ability to stop, so a long slow heavy freight train should be a Zugart U, for example. In the descriptions below, the process that is followed is exactly the same regardless of the train type selected, what differs is the speed limits that are enforced. PZB is implemented by means of three kinds of magnets that are placed on the track; these are described as 500Hz, 1000Hz and 2000Hz. These magnets are only powered if their associated signal is set at a non-clear aspect, if the aspect is clear ( green / green ) then the magnets have no effect on the train. For some controlled element, such as a signal, each of the magnets will be placed in the following order: 1000Hz - at some remote point on the track such as the distant signal 500Hz - usually 250m before the main signal being checked 2000Hz - placed at the signal itself Seite 15

For this description, a Zugart O train is assumed. Note: In the speed limit descriptions below the line limit always overrides that given in the description. For example, if the description says that you must be below 85km/h and the line limit is 60km/h then this takes precedence. 1000Hz Magnet A passing train will first meet the 1000Hz magnet and the 1000Hz lamp will light on the PZB display after pressing PZB Wachsam / key Page Down while passing the signal. On the Train Simulator 2012 HUD, the exclamation point indicator will light up with a wasp black/yellow pattern, but there is no audible indicator. The driver now has four seconds within which to press the PZB Wachsam button (Page Down). Failure to do this will result in emergency brakes being applied. Having acknowledged the 1000Hz magnet, the driver now has 23 seconds to drop their speed to 85km/h ( Note: A different Zugart ( M or U ) has a different speed ) or emergency brakes will apply. After the train has passed 700m from the 1000Hz magnet the 1000Hz lamp will go out and at this point the driver may choose to press PZB Frei (End) to get out of the speed restriction if, and only if, they can clearly see that the controlled signal is now showing a clear aspect. If the driver presses PZB Frei and then runs over an active 500Hz magnet the train assumes the driver has made a mistake and will apply emergency brakes. 500Hz Magnet On passing the 500Hz magnet, the train must not be exceeding 65km/h or the emergency brakes will be applied. The 500Hz lamp on the PZB display will light up. The train now has 153 meters to reduce speed to 45km/h. The 45km/h speed limit is now in force for the next 250m. It is not possible to release from this with the PZB Frei button. 2000Hz Magnet If the train passes an active 2000Hz magnet then it will always apply its emergency brakes as the only time this can happen is if the train is passing a signal at danger. Other notes If, while under the control of a 1000Hz or 500Hz magnet, the train stops or spends more than 15 seconds at less than 10km/h the enforced speed limit will be reduced by a further 20km/h and this is then called a restrictive speed limit. This is indicated on the PZB display by the speed indicators (the top row) alternating between two lamps ( 70 and 85 ). Once the magnet lamp goes out you can press PZB Frei (END) to get out of the restrictive speed limit. Seite 16

Befehl40 ( Order 40km/h ) The Befehl40 button (DEL) allows a special case that instructs the train to ignore a 2000Hz ( red signal ) magnets that it comes across. You are put in to an enforced speed limit of 40km/h while this is active, exceeding this limit will cause the emergency brakes to apply. To pass the red signal press and hold DEL for PZB Befehl40 until the Befehl40 light lights up. Type of Train Normal Monitoring Restrictive Monitoring 1000Hz 500Hz 1000Hz 500Hz O (Obere) 165km/h -> 85km/h in 23 seconds 65km/h -> 45km/h in 153m 45km/h constant 45km/h -> 25km/h In 153m M (Mittlere) 125km/h -> 75km/h in 26 seconds 50km/h -> 35km/h in 153m 45km/h constant 25km/h constant U (Untere) 105km/h -> 55km/h in 34 seconds 40km/h -> 25km/h in 153m 45km/h constant 25km/h constant Further Reading You can find more recommended reading about the German PZB90 system at these links: (content is owned and maintained by 3 rd parties and not under our control) Seite 17
