6 THE AGE AND SEX STRUCTURE OF THE POPULATON OF SOUTH DAKOTA, by Marvin P. Riley, James L. Satterlee, and Deborah Crotchett 0 NTRODUCTON This bulletin is a response to the numerous requests for an up-date on information for the age and sex composition of South Dakota's population. As local leaders and citizens grapple with the complex problems facing their communities today they need to know more than the total number of people in their area. They need to know the number of males and females in each age group. A knowledge of the age-sex composition ef the population and how it is changing is essential to deal effectively with the complex issue of taxation, school enrollment, pollution, health, welfare and medical services. t is precisely with these needs in mind that the authors designed the present bulletin -- its main purpose being to make age and sex composition information on South Dakota's population available in a readily useable form. ORGANZATON OF THE BULLETN n order to provide as much factual data as possible and to permit comparisons between populations, the age and sex information for the census years of 1970 and 1980 is presented for the following political units: United States, State of South Dakota, State Planning Districts, South Dakota Counties, and South Dakota Urban Places. Age and sex data for each of the above mentioned political units for the years 1970 and 1980 is presented in three forms. These are: 1. An "age-sex pyramid" - a graphic representation of the age-sex distribution of the population. 2. A "data table" - a table which presents the official United States census count of the population by age and by sex. 3, Population Ratios and ndexes - eight summary measures of the relationships between various segments of the population. These are defined below. Age-Sex Pyramid DEFNTONS A graphic representation of the age and sex distribution of the population for a given political unit in the form of a special type bar graph. The pyramid is divided on its horizontal axis into bars, each bar being based on the proportion each five year age category is of the total population. On its vertical axis each age bar of the pyramid is divided into the proportion of males and females. Thus, the bottom bar of the age-sex pyramid will show the percent the male children under five years of age is of the total population and the percent female children under five years of age is of the total population. Data Tables These tables contain the basic data for the age and sex pyramid. They present the count of the number of inhabitants for the given political unit by five year age categories for males and fem..les. 7 Population Ratios and ndexes 1. General Dependency Ratio: The basis for the dependency ratio is the idea that certain age groups in the population are generally productive and other age groups are generally dependent upon the efforts of the productive group. Of course, the term "dependent" will always be somewhat arbitrary and there will be exceptions. Nevertheless, it has become customary to refer to the population under 15 and over 65 years of age as the dependent population and the population 15 through 64 years as the productive population. The formula for the ratio is: General Dependency Ratio = Persons under 15 rs + Persons rs & Over x loo ersons ears 2. Youth Dependency Ratio: This is a more refined measure of dependent population in that it breaks the child population out of the total dependent population and treats the child population separately in relation to the productive population. The formula for this ratio is: Youth Dependency Ratio Persons under 15 Years x 100 Persons 15 to 65 Years J. Aged Dependency Ratio: This is a more refined measure of dependency showing the relation of the aged dependent population to the productive population. The formula for this ratio is: Aged Dependency Ratio = Persons 65 Years and Over x 100 Persons 15 to 65 Years 4. ndex of Aging: This index relates the two segments of the dependent population (the children and the aged) to each other. When the index figure is compared with other years, it provides a single measure of the extent to which a population is aging. The formula for this index is ndex of Aging = Persons 65 Years and Over x 100 Persons Under 15 Years 6 5. Sex Ratio: The simplest measure of population structure is the "sex ratio" which is defined as the number of males per 100 females. The formula for this ratio is: Sex Ratio = Number of Males Number of Females x Fertility Ratio: Often termed the "child-women ratio", this measure of the fertility of a population is derived entirely from census data and is based on the number of children under five years per 1, 000 women child-bearing age (15 to 45 years of age). The formula is: Fertility Ratio = Children Under 5 Years of Age x 1000 Number of Women Ages 15 to Young Adult Ratio: This measure focuses attention on the younger adult segment of the population. This ratio relates the age group containing the "potential" parents and those persons in the early stages of the family building process to the remainder of the population. The formula for this ratio is: Young Adult Ratio = Persons 15 to 35 Years Persons Under 15 Yrs + Pesons 35 Yrs & O ver x Median Age: The most useful single figure summarizing a population's age structure is its median age; a form of "average", which divides the population into two equal parts half older and half younger. The median age of South Dakota's population in 1970 was years. This figure tells us that one-half of the population was older and onehalf of the population was younger than the age of 27 years.
