SYNERG-E Project Scaling Up: Deployment of local Charging and Storage Management - Use Case public High-Power Charging SYNERG-E Event,
Overview PART ONE Providing Power to HPC Infrastructure Use Cases, Locations, Systems, etc. PART TWO Stabilizing the Grid: HPC in Europe by 2022 Power Demand, Grid Services, etc. 2
SYNERG-E: Local Stationary Buffer Storage Systems for Ultra-fast Charging Stations AC/DC Converter AP 500 kw AC kw DC RES Production Grid Connection (Access Point) 500 kw AC/DC Converter DC DC Virtual Power Plant & Trading Battery Charging Station EV 3
Overview of Use Cases of Battery Energy Storage Systems at HPC Infrastructure Provision of Grid Services (stand-alone / with other power plants) Imbalance Reduction Peak-Load Shaving Intraday Commercialisation / Trading Uninterruptable Power Supply / Power Quality Integration of local (renewable) Electricity Generation Enabling of Locations 4
Provision of Grid Services To stabilise the system frequency to 50 Hz after a sudden imbalance, the transmission system operator (TSO) can activate different control reserves / ancillary services. The different levels of control reserves work on different, but overlapping timeframes Time Source: ENTSO-E 5
Provision of Grid Services Example for the Provision of FCR with a BESS FCR [kw] BESS Cap. [kwh] Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with 350 kw / 500 kwh FCR [kw] :00: :00: :00: :00: :00: :00: :00: :00: :00: :00: :00: :00: BESS Capacity [kwh] Source: Own simulation 6
Ultra-High Power Charging leads to increased Demand on the Electricity Grid Experience from 50 kw fast chargers show that load on the grids comes with very high peaks and no load between charging events. Based on grid access tariffs this also places a burden on fast charging business cases. kw Load on Fast Charger (50 kw) Two vehicles charging Peak kw After Peak Shaving 7
Peak-Load Shaving Grid Tariffs of selected DSOs in Germany (2017) <2500 hrs./a >2500 hrs./a Grid Operator Capacity fee /kw/a Price per demand ct/kwh Capacity fee /kw/a Price per demand ct/kwh Avacon Netz Bayernwerk Netz GmbH Netze BW GmbH Ovag Netz AG Stadtwerke Sangerhausen GmbH Syna GmbH Westnetz GmbH Source: allego 8
New Role of Power Provider The Power Provider is the operator of the local stationary battery energy storage system (BESS), who provides the charge point operator (CPO) the needed energy and power for the location. TSO Aggregator The Power Provider manages and optimises energy and power provision for the location by establishing links to electricity suppliers and aggregators for the commercialisation of the BESS flexibility, while keeping the grid connection needs to the local DSO at a minimum level. Electricity Supplier DSO PowerProvider CPO MSP 9
SYNERG-E Locations Status Quo GERMANY (allego) Heppenheim (contracted) AUSTRIA (SMATRICS) Linz (advanced) Stuttgart (advanced) Bergkirchen (contracted) Search Areas Vienna (contracted) Feldkirchen bei Graz (contracted) 10
SYNERG-E Locations Location Evaluation Factors Full user accessibility - 24/7 unrestricted access from public roads to charger Sufficient physical space: ~ 140 m 2 for 4-6 parking lots (12,5 m 2 each) Chargers, power electronics, transformer (~ 50 m 2 ) BESS (~18 m²) Sufficient power available - without peak shaving min. ~ 800 kva Compliance to regulations and permits 11
SYNERG-E Locations System Overview Official Meter Additional Metering Equipment DSO Public Grid Grid Connection / Transformer Communication Link Virtual Power Plant & Trading MGMS BESS Charging Station EV Central Central Monitoring & Management CPO Physical Connection Communication Link 12

Overview PART ONE Providing Power to HPC Infrastructure Use Cases, Locations, Systems, etc. PART TWO Stabilizing the Grid: HPC in Europe by 2022 Power Demand, Grid Services, etc. 16
Roll-Out of HPC Infrastructure in Europe Outlook Various projects, programmes and initiatives facilitate the large-scale roll-out of HPC infrastructure across Europe: EUROP-E : 400 HPC stations in 18 countries ULTRA-E: 25 HPC stations in 4 countries MEGA-E: 322 HPC stations in 20 countries E-VIA FLEX-E: 14 HPC stations in 3 countries CEUC Central European Ultra Charging: 118 HPC => HPC chargers will become reality soon! 17
Power Roll-Out of HPC Infrastructure in Europe Power Demand Average HPC location with 4 dispensers each with max. 350 kw Peak-power demand of 4 x 350 kw = kw for location As charging process of E-vehicles is dependent on the end-user, it cannot be forecasted / scheduled as other energy demands Today, charging stations therefore have a standard load profile of 0 1 => 100% of Energy Demand of a HPC is Balancing Energy! Time 18
Frequency Containment Reserves (FCR) Contracted Reserves Currently, TSOs in Central Europe contract about 2 GW of capacity for Frequency Containment Reserves (Primary Control) ENTSO-E Region Continental Europe: 3 GW Kavsakbendi 413 MW GDK
HPC Peak-Demand vs. FCR Possible demand fluctuation at all HPC stations in Europe: HPC stations x kw x 0,7 simultaneity factor ~ 1 GW or ½ of the FCR in Central Europe Conclusions: Power Demand of HPC Infrastructure might have a big Impact on Grid Balancing! Local Buffer Batteries help to mitigate large Fluctuations and to lower Peak-Demand at HPC Stations and additionally provide FCR to TSOs! 20
