WELCOME North Central LRT Open Houses June 11, Ascension of Our Lord School June 12, Winston Heights June 13, Thorncliffe Community Hall
LRT planning and your community Continuing the conversation What we will learn from you What you will learn from us 1
Study purpose The study will determine: 2
Project timeline Project schedule Listening and talking with Calgarians every step of the way. Develop vision and objectives and objectives 2013 Fall Fall
Continuing the conversation Popular words from Calgarians during the 2011 North Central LRT public engagement 4
Continuing the conversation Some themes and comments we heard from Calgarians in 2011: Connectivity to other areas of the city is very important Need for access to downtown How easily the stations serve the public - and encourage them to use the transit system is critical Location, location, location Route impact on existing housing Station design that addresses security/safety? Access to future Calgary/Edmonton high speed train line LRT should have little or no negative traffic impacts Decreasing the traffic on our main routes Reduced productivity due to increased traffic congestion Opportunities for cycling/walking connections to the line Protect natural areas and be mindful of the environment Reducing automobile use and parking structures 5
Why LRT for North Central Calgary The City of Calgary is improving transportation choices to connect Calgarians and their communities. Edmonton Trail and Centre Street each day. North Central is still growing. New developments north of Stoney Trail are expected to bring 50,000 new Calgarians in the next 30 years. Today, more people choose public transit than cars when commuting along Centre Street N. The North Central LRT will help complete the transit network of buses and trains in the area and city-wide. 6
North Central LRT route options Three routes are under review for the north central area: t $FOUSF 4USFFU / t &ENPOUPO 5SBJM t /PTF $SFFL k Cree Nose Centre Street Edmonton Trail A recommended route will be presented to Council for approval in late Onward/ Enable public pub b transit, walking and cycling as the preferred mobility choices for more people. 7
