Reaction Gate Section 1 System Description Section 1 - System Description Reaction Gate by PSI is a training and evaluation tool that enhances rider reaction time, strengthens focus, and improves riding skill. As a rider approaches multiple lanes, lights on all lanes but one illuminate red and the rider must make the split second decision to take the clear lane. Commonly known as Brake and Escape in police motor training, this exercises a rider s judgment in regard to how fast they approach the Reaction Gate and teaches rapid response to any obstacle or decision that a high performance rider will face. As the threshold is crossed, the system randomly selects the clear lane and wirelessly triggers all remaining lanes to illuminate red. Easy setup, wireless operation, and internal batteries make the system not only functional but also trouble free and simple to operate. PSI can configure the Reaction Gate for multiple channel and system operations such as EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operations Course) or also setup for two lights per lane with green and red in each lane. Many applications may be served by variations in the system. Some applications have included motocross courses with multiple tracks and the Reaction Gate sends riders on the high road or the low road completely randomly. Power supply options: The standard Reaction Gate system is configured for AA battery operation with the Emitter Unit, Base Unit and each Light Unit requiring eight AA batteries each. NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries are recommended for maximum of operational time. The Reaction Gate may also be upgraded for remote 12 Volt battery operation or 120 VAC power supplies which are utilized in more permanent situations. Reaction Gate is a product of the U.S.A., developed and manufactured by PSI, Sacramento, CA. 1

Reaction Gate Section 1 System Description Figure 1: ID Plate Information Serial Number Identification: When a system is shipped, all units within the system share the first five characters of the serial number (xxxxx). The last digit of the serial number indicates whether a device is a Base Unit, Emitter Unit or which particular Light Unit. Since the system is synchronized with an RF channel and a network ID, it is essential that units of the same base serial number operate together. Table 1: Serial Number Identification xxxxx-0 Emitter Unit xxxxx-9 Base Unit xxxxx-1 Light Unit 1 xxxxx-2 Light Unit 2 xxxxx-{3-8} Light Unit {3-8} Environmental Considerations All Reaction Gate products are weather resistant and are sealed against light rain and external moisture. Weep holes at the bottom of each unit allow for the escape of trapped water so at no time should the devices be installed upside down. All internal electronics are sealed with Humiseal for protection. Internal electronics are sensitive and the units should not be exposed to excessive forces or dropped from a significant distance. There are no user-serviceable parts inside and the housings should never be opened by anyone other than a PSI trained technician or engineer. 2

Reaction Gate Section 3 Batteries and Power Section 3 - Batteries and Power Battery Selection The Reaction Gate system was designed for operation with AA batteries. In each Light Unit, Emitter Unit, and the Base Unit is a carrier that holds 8 AA batteries. While the system will operate with Alkaline, Nickel Cadmium (NiCad), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH), or Lithium Ion AA style batteries; performance will vary with the various types of batteries. If using disposable batteries, a quality alkaline battery (such as the Energizer E91) will provide approximately 50 hours of service. The Lithium battery will provide a longer run time and when used in the Light Unit, they will maintain maximum brightness throughout the operational time. This is superior to the alkaline batteries which will gradually dim with use. Battery Type Reuse Table 2: Battery Types and Run Times Base Unit Approximate Run Time Emitter Unit Approximate Run Time Light Unit Approximate Run Time Notes Lithium Disposable 22.3 hours 70 hours hours Preferred Battery Alkaline Disposable 25.5 hours 80 hours hours Lights dim as batteries drain Budget Disposable Alkaline NiMH Rechargeable hours 40 hours 21.8 hours NiCd Rechargeable 6.38 hours 20 hours 10.9 hours Batteries have memory Electrical specifications: Base Unit: 94mA ( max 0.1mA) Emitter Unit: 30mA ( max 0.37mA) Light Unit: 55mA Low Battery Indication Base and Emitter Units: Light Unit: Power On heartbeat will flash three times in Succession. Only the center LEDs illuminate. 6

Reaction Gate Section 3 Batteries and Power Battery Installation Emitter Unit, Base Unit or Light Unit Unscrew the Battery Access Cap (4) and allow the Battery Carrier (2) to slide out. Install eight new AA batteries (do not mix old and new batteries or various battery types) into the carrier while paying attention to the polarity indicators inside the carrier. Paying attention to the indexing marks on the Battery Carrier, push the loaded Battery Carrier back into the unit and reattach the Battery Access Cap. Figure 5: Battery Carrier 7

Reaction Gate Section 3 Batteries and Power Power On Test Base and Emitter Units Once the unit is powered on, the green front panel LED will flash, once every two seconds as a heartbeat indication that power is on and that the batteries have sufficient capacity. As the batteries drain to a low level, this LED will flash three times in succession to indicate the batteries should be recharged or replaced. Power On Test Light Unit When power is switched on the light will flash briefly to indicate that power is on. If only the center light flashes briefly or no lights are observed at all, then the batteries should be recharged or replaced. Additional Power Options: AC Power Kit (PSI part number RG-AC-1): Replaces the AA battery pack with an external power cable and wall transformer for fixed installations. DC Power Kit (PSI part number RG-DC-1): Replaces the AA battery pack with an external power cord that connects to an external battery for longer run times. 8

Reaction Gate Section 4 Field Setup Section 4 - System Field Setup Base / Emitter Units The Gate is typically setup between two 28 traffic cones. The Base Unit and Emitter Unit have brackets on the back that will slide over the top of a cone and allow for adjustment. The beam travels between the units and they must be aligned such that a good signal is received at the Base Unit. Place the Base Unit onto a traffic cone and turn the Base Unit power on. The blue alignment LED s will flash indicating that the unit does not see the beam from the Emitter Unit. Turn on the power to the Emitter Unit and hold this unit face to face to the Base Unit; the alignment LED s will stop flashing, indicating that the Base Unit sees the Emitter Unit and that the beam is sufficiently aligned. Move the Emitter Unit away from the Base Unit, paying attention to the alignment LED s. With the Emitter Unit in position the alignment LED s should remain off until the beam path is broken. If there is any intermittent flashing of the alignment LED s then the units may not be sufficiently aligned. Sweep the Emitter Unit side to side to find the dropout to the left and right and set to the center of the sweep. For safety of the Base and Emitter Units, these units should be set back from the traffic lane by a safe distance. Figure 6: Gate setup distances 9

Reaction Gate Section 4 Field Setup Figure 7: Light Unit Overview Light Units Light Units are equipped with mounting hardware that allows for attachment to a 1 ¼ or 1 ½ mast. This mast is standard in the Tripod Kit (TRI-2). Locate the tripods and Light Units down the course in the manner that suits the test. Maximum range between the Base Unit and the Light Unit is 75 ft (30 m); however most suitable locations are much closer. 10

Reaction Gate Section 5 Programming Section 5 Programming Figure 8: Base Unit Programming Overview The Programming Button allows for a quick test to confirm communication with all Light Units. It is also used to change the programmed reset time. A default time delay of 8 seconds is built into the system to accommodate for unintentional triggering of the Gate after a rider goes through. This parameter is adjustable through the use of the Programming Button. Light Unit Alive Test Pressing the program button will cause all the Light Units to illuminate. This test will function up to five seconds. If the program button is pressed for longer than five seconds the Base Unit will enter the programming mode. 11

Reaction Gate Section 5 Programming Two Light System Programming Light On Time The default time for how long the light remains on after a trigger is 8 seconds. The systems returns to the default time each time the power is cycled. To change the on time press and hold the Program Button located on the bottom of the Base Unit for five seconds. Both Light Units will blink to indicate the new On Time parameter. Each consecutive five second press of the Program Button will change the On Time as shown in the table below. Table 3: Programming Modes On Time duration (seconds) default Three Light System Programming Light Mode Default for the three light system is the one of three configuration with each light having a 33% chance of illuminating with each consecutive trigger. The system reverts to the default mode whenever power is cycled on the Base Unit. To change the on time press and hold the Program Button located on the bottom of the Base Unit for five seconds. All Light Units will flash four times to indicate that the programming has changed. Pressing and holding the Program Button again until the Light Units flash four times will toggle the program mode back to the one-of-three configuration. 12

Reaction Gate Section 6 Troubleshooting Section 6 - Troubleshooting Range Degradation If the range of the system seems degraded, first check batteries or replace with fresh AA Lithium-Ion or Alkaline Batteries. Radio Interference is possible in some circumstances. This device operates in the 2.4 GHz ISM band which is the same frequency band utilized by wireless routers, microwave ovens, and many modern devices. Due to the low power nature of these devices, they would have to be in close proximity to generate interference but this could be an issue. Particularly in the case where a Police Motor unit is utilizing some form of Wi-Fi for their Mobile Data application. In this case, turn off this particular device during the training session. All Reaction Gates operate on the upper limit of available channels to minimize this sort of interference. 13
