1 ERGONOMICS ANALYSIS Job Safety Analysis Step 1 PROVIDE BACKGROUND Job/Task: Manual Water Supply Hose Lay Date: mm/dd/ccyy Analyzed by: Safety Consultant Location: Mosquito Heights Project Number: Employee Name (optional): Supervisor: A. Blaze Fire Services Department: Public Safety Fire Department Job Title: Fire Fighter Commander Step 2 CURRENT MAJOR STEPS Step 3 ERGONOMICS ISSUES Step 4 SOLUTIONS Step 1: Climb up onto Fire Engine to access the large diameter hose (LDH). Potential slips and falls due to: o Poor weather conditions o Worn footwear o Lack of 3 points of contact o Adrenaline and necessity of speed Ensure that training sessions emphasize how Fire Fighter safety is the priority and discuss: o seasonal weather conditions having a greater impact on injuries, such as slips and falls o 3 points of contact while climbing or descending any fire apparatus o Fire Fighter safety as it relates to adrenaline, speed, decisions and the importance of Standard Operating Guidelines (SOG) Review the current (if any) footwear inspection and replacement program. Step 2: Grab the LDH coupling and step off of the Fire Engine. Same potential ergonomic issues as in step one Weigh the pros and cons of future Fire Engine purchases with consideration into the location of the hose bed. o A lower hose bed may eliminate the need to step on and off of the Fire Engine tailboard to access the LDH; however, this may also limit the water tank capacity of that Fire Engine.
2 Step 3: Walk the LDH from the Fire Engine to the fire hydrant while LDH is being pulled from Fire Engine by another Firefighter. Potential back strains from dragging and pulling LDH. Additional hazards from working in the roadway at a fire scene. Research/trial/vendor demonstrate if a hose reel will provide faster clean-up, pre-connection or storage, no draining, stacking or dragging, provide efficient use of vehicle space and increased hose capacity; as indicated by the vendor. Utilizing this type of hose reel may help reduce potential back strains (has automatic re-loader controls) and decrease water supply line connection time. Ensure that training sessions emphasize how Fire Fighter safety is the priority and discuss: o Traffic control procedures and awareness.
3 ( Step 4: Carry the Hydrant Tool Bag to the fire hydrant. Hydrant Tool Bag ` Weight: Approximately 45 lbs. Carrying the Hydrant Tool Bag back and forth from the engine to the hydrant. Future purchase of lighter weight hydrant tools to lighten the overall weight of the Hydrant Tool Bag. Remove any unnecessary tools from the bag. Only store tools used the vast majority of the time in the Hydrant Tool Bag. Tools that are rarely or never used can be stored in another location. Trial a Hydrant Tool Bag that attaches to the connection end of the hydrant line. o This may help to eliminate the need for a second Firefighter to bring the Hydrant Tool Bag to
4 the Fire Hydrant while the first Firefighter is dragging the LDH, and decrease water supply line connection time. ( Step 5: Attach LDH to fire hydrant. Remove hydrant cap Fully open the hydrant Using a standard fire hydrant wrench while: o Bending at the waist o Reaching o Force - Up to 25 pounds of force needed to open most hydrants o Repetition in an awkward position (2.5 lb standard hydrant wrench approximately 20 turns to open and 20 turns to close hydrant) Use a long handled, ratcheting wrench to open the hydrant. This will help to reduce the amount of bending and reaching done by the employee This will help to reduce the amount of force an employee will have to exert in a bent or reaching position. Examples: (
