In fact, every 10 C drop in operating temperature doubles the expected life of the insulation. To remove heat fast, Lincoln utilizes extruded aluminum frames in TEFC sizes 182T-286T and stagger-stacked laminations in TEFC sizes 324T-449T and in ODP, 284T-449T. Aluminum is a great heat sink. In fact, it pulls heat away from motor windings four times faster than cast iron or steel. The extrusion process enhances aluminum s heat conducting properties by allowing the frame sections to have thinner fins placed closer together. The result is more fins and greater surface area for maximum cooling. 5 aterials Selection Mere Efficiency We Haven t Forgotten the Importance of the Bearing System A bearing s life is shortened by friction and heat. Dust, dirt or other contaminants damage ball and race surfaces. If a bearing fails, good chance the motor fails, too. Lincoln uses: double-shielded deep-groove ball bearings moisture-resistant polyurea lubricant slingers on all drive shafts and on the fan end of TEFC motors (competitors use them only on their severe duty motors) Lincoln Steel Frame Motors: They Don t Come Any More Durable Than This First, a little metallurgy: the yield strength of steel is higher than the ultimate strength of cast iron. This makes steel much stronger and 250% more rigid than cast iron. Cast iron is perceived as a rugged motor frame material because of its bulkiness, when in reality its relatively fragile nature requires 2-1/2 times as much metal to approach the performance of steel. And when it comes to impact loads, steel provides much greater resistance to cracking. A Steel Frame with Foot Flatness to Rival the Best Cast Iron Frames Lincoln s quality manufacturing techniques produce steel frame motors that meet the demanding IEEE 841 specification for foot flatness (to 0.005"). All of our steel motors from 284T and up meet this spec, which was written for top-of-the-line cast iron frame motors. The Best Way to Describe Lincoln s Aluminum Frame Motors: Tough We use an extruded aluminum alloy for our frames- not cast aluminum. The extrusion process provides dense sections free from slag inclusions, porosity and other defects which reduce the physical performance of cast aluminum frames. In addition, extruded aluminum when compared to cast iron or cast aluminum has a greater resistance to cracking under impact loads. Extruded aluminum cooling fins will bend when struck; cast iron fins tend to break. Plus, the natural corrosion resistance of extruded aluminum is far superior to cast aluminum at slowing degradation from chemical attack.
