10 2 ~ Safety 2.1 IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION The following safety symbols may be found through this manual and should be carefully read and followed. SHOCK HAZARD DO NOT TOUCH UN-INSULATED BATTERY, CONNECTORS OR TERMINALS. BE SURE TO DISCHARGE STATIC ELECTRICITY FROM TOOLS AND TECHNICIAN BY TOUCHING A GROUNDED SURFACE IN THE VICINITY OF THE BATTERIES BUT AWAY FROM THE CELLS AND FLAME ARRESTERS. ALL TOOLS SHOULD BE ADEQUATELY INSULATED TO AVOID THE POSSIBILITY OF SHORTING CONNECTIONS. DO NOT LAY TOOLS ON THE TOP OF THE BATTERY. VRLA BATTERIES CONTAIN SULFURIC ACID, WHICH CAN CAUSE SEVERE BURNS. IN CASE OF SKIN CONTACT WITH ELECTROLYTE, REMOVE CONTAMINATED CLOTHING AND FLUSH AFFECTED AREAS THOROUGHLY WITH WATER. IF EYE CONTACT HAS OCCURRED, FLUSH FOR A MINIMUM OF 15 MINUTES WITH LARGE AMOUNTS OF RUNNING WATER AND SEEK IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION ALTHOUGH VRLA BATTERIES ARE SEALED, AND EMIT NO GAS DURING NORMAL OPERATION. THEY CONTAIN POTENTIALLY EXPLOSIVE GASES, WHICH MAY BE RELEASED UNDER ABNORMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS, SUCH AS A CHARGER MALFUNCTION. PROVIDE ADEQUATE VENTILATION SO HYDROGEN GAS ACCUMULATION IN THE BATTERY AREA DOES NOT EXCEED TWO PERCENT BY VOLUME. NEVER INSTALL BATTERIES IN A SEALED CABINET OR ENCLOSURE. NORMAL AIR CIRCULATION IN A VENTILATED FACILITY WILL PRECLUDE ANY HYDROGEN UILD-UP, EVEN DURING EQUALIZE CHARGING The following levels of warning will be used with the above symbols: DANGER: YOU WILL BE KILLED OR SERIOUSLY INJURED IF INSTRUCTIONS ARE NOT FOLLOWED CLOSELEY. WARNING: YOU CAN BE KILLED OR SERIOUSLY INJURED IF INSTRUCTIONS ARE NOT FOLLOWED CLOSELY. CAUTION: YOU CAN BE INJURED OR EQUIPMENT CAN BE DAMAGED IF INSTRUCTIONS ARE NOT FOLLOWED CLOSELY. 9

Refer to the manufacturers recommendations. Review and upgrade the utility service panel circuit breaker requirements whenever the equipment within the enclosure is changed. Prior to installation, contact local utilities, local building maintenance departments and cable, piping locating services to ensure that installation does not interfere with existing utility or building cables/piping. Fuses/circuit breakers may not be provided with the equipment. Refer to the documentation for the proper hardware. Use only the parts specified in the documentation. Installing fuses or circuit not specified for use in this equipment may result in injury to service personnel or equipment damage. For installation in the United States or Canada, use listed / certified compression connectors to terminate listed/certified field installed conductors where required. If the proper connector for the country of installation is not provided, obtain the appropriate connectors and follow the manufactures and all local requirements for proper connections. Torque electrical connections to the values specified on labels or in the product documentation. 12

14 2 ~ Safety 2.4 Mechanical Safety Keep hands, hardware and tools clear form the fans, Fans are thermostatically controlled and will turn on automatically as a function of temperature. Use caution around sheet metal components and sharp edges. 2.5 Battery Safety Always wear eye protection. Rubber gloves and a protective vest when working near batteries. Remove all metallic objects from hands, wrist and neck. Batteries contain dangerous voltages, current and corrosive materials. Battery maintenance, service, replacement must be performed by authorized personnel only Never use un-insulated tools or other conductive materials when installing, maintaining, servicing or replacing batteries. Use special caution when connecting or adjusting battery cables. An improperly connected battery cable can result in arcing, fire or possibly explosion. A battery showing signs of cracks, swelling or leaking must be replaced immediately by authorized personnel using a battery of identical type and make. Do not smoke or introduce sparks in the vicinity of a battery. Follow the battery manufacturers approved transportation and storage instructions. Prior to handling the batteries, touch a grounded metal object to dissipate any static charge that may have developed in your body. Batteries and battery post may contain lead and lead compounds, wash hands after handling. If any battery emissions contacts the skin, wash immediately and thoroughly with water. Neutralize any spilled battery emissions with a special solution contained in an approved spill kit or with a solution of 1 lb. bicarbonate of soda to 1 gallon of water. Seek medical attentions if necessary. Each battery should have at least ½ inch of space between it and surrounding batteries as per the manufacture's specifications o allow for convective cooling. Approved Battery cables must be as per the manufacture s specifications. 13

15 2 ~ Electrical 2.5 Grounding Proper electrical grounding is essential for Cell Sites, BTS Cellular Base Stations, telecommunications or wireless network equipment deployment. 32 4 ~ Cabinet Installation 4.5 Unpacking and Inspection The enclosure is shipped from the factory with protective packaging which includes a pallet, strapping, and outer cardboard shell. When handling a cabinet that is not properly secured to the pallet or has its protective packaging removed may result in damage to the product. It is recommended that none of the packaging is removed until the enclosure is at the job site. 1. Safely remove the cabinet while still secured to the pallet and packaging form the shipping vehicle and place it on the ground as close as possible to the installation site. 2. Carefully cut the metal strapping, careful that the strapping does not recoil back as it is under tension. 3. Remove all the plastic wrap and protective card board from the cabinet. 4. Remove the mounting bolts that secure the wood strip around the perimeter of the cabinet. 5. After unpacking the system, inspect that the enclosure is not damaged or missing components. Report any problems to NPS Customer care department as soon as possible. 6. Batteries will be shipped to site on a separate skid. 4.6 Cabinet Lifting and Mounting All National and regional safety requirements must be followed for lifting and placement of the enclosure. Although the enclosure is designed to carry the weight of the batteries it is recommended to install the batteries after moving the enclosure into place. All personnel who are involved with lifting the enclosure should wear head, eye, gloves and safety steel toe boots. Extreme care must be taken by the crane or boom truck operator when lifting a fully populated cabinet. The operator is liable for any and all damage that results from improper handling during lifting. 31

33 4 ~ Cabinet Installation 4.6 Cabinet Lifting and Mounting The Granite IV cabinet is equipped with 4 lifting bolts capable of supporting a fully loaded Granite IV enclosure. Ensure that each lifting straps is capable of lifting a minimum of 6000 lb. and are of equal lengths and clear of no abrasions.
