3 North Terminal New Bedford North Terminal: This active bulk commodities site is ideal for certain manufacturing activities, and has some challenges to use for other components. The site also has advantages: relatively large open acreages on the waterfront in Massachusetts, relatively open existing site conditions (which requires less demolition than other sites), industrial history and a neighborhood used to industry. North Terminal requires a new quayside to bring it in to use for the offshore wind industry. Innovation-based Solutions: Construction of a new quayside built as a confined disposal facility (CDF) to keep costs as low as possible; and Installation of finger piers with gantry crane approach to useable quayside. Broader uses could be accommodated with a new bulkhead and quayside at a larger investment. Massachusetts Clean Energy Center 2017 Massachusetts Offshore Wind Ports & Infrastructure Assessment 165
