22 Smart Motor Controllers SMC-2 Modes of Operation Series Controller Te SMC-2 Controller is designed to operate in series wit an electromecanical motor starter. Te series mode as te following features: Eliminates te need for additional control wiring, simplifying initial installation. Worksinunisonwitanexistingelectromecanicalmotor starter for easy retrofits. Allows easy set-up wit digital adjustments, eliminating te guesswork of setting analog potentiometers. Controller wit Interface Option Te SMC-2 Controller wit te interface option is designed so itcanbeoperatedbyanexternaldevice.teinterfaceoption enances te capabilities of te controller. It can be field or factory installed. For devices rated 5 16 A, tis is a plug-in module. For devices rated A, tere is a PC board tat replaces te existing board. Te SMC-2 Controller wit te interface option offers te following features: Provides ON/OFF control directly to te controller troug an external pilot device. In many applications te interface Modes of Operation option may eliminate te need for an additional contactor if electrical isolation or soft stop is not required. Tis reduces panel space requirements. Provides a selectable auxiliary contact, wic operates as eiter an instantaneous or up-to-speed contact, making it available for a wide variety of control scemes. Provides a Soft Stop feature tat extends stopping time to minimize load sifting or spillage during stopping. Energy Saver Tis built-in feature of te SMC-2 Controller is used to save energy on applications were te motor is ligtly loaded or unloaded for long periods of time. Protective Module In applications were te SMC-2 Controller is exposed to ig or abnormal line transients, an optional protective module is available and can be mounted on bot te line and load side of te unit. Te protective module contains MOVs (Metal Oxide Varistors) tat protect te SCR from line surges and snubber networks to sunt noise energy away. Percent Voltage 100% Initial Torque Start Time (seconds) Run Soft Start Tis metod as te most general application. Te motor is raised from an initial torque value to full voltage. Tis initial torque is adjustable between 0 70% of locked rotor torque. Te motor voltage is gradually increased during te acceleration ramp time, wic can be adjusted from 2 30 seconds. 550% Full Load Amps 25% Start Time (seconds) Current Limit Starting Tis starting mode is used wen it is necessary to limit te maximum starting current. It can be adjusted for % of full load amps. If te motor is not up to speed after te selected time elapses, te controller will transition to full voltage. 100% Percent Voltage Full Voltage Starting Tis mode is used for applications requiring across-te-line starting. Te ramp time is set for less tan 1/10 second as sown. Time (seconds) Options 100% Percent Voltage Initial Torque Start Run Coast Soft Stop Time Soft Stop Te Soft Stop feature is available wit an optional interface module. 41 Smart Motor Controllers SMC PLUS Modes of Operation Te controller provides te following modes of operation: soft start wit selectable kickstart, current limit start, or full voltage start across-te-line starting. Soft Start Tis metod as te most general application. Te motor is raised to an initial torque value. Te initial torque is adjustable between 5 and 90% of locked rotor torque. Te motor voltage is gradually increased during te acceleration ramp time, wic can be adjusted from 2 30 seconds. Tese customer settings are set for te best starting performance over te required load range. Soft Start wit Selectable Kickstart A kickstart or boost can be provided. Kickstart is intended to provide a current pulse of 550% of full load current and is adjustable from seconds. Tis will allow te motor to develop additional torque at start for loads wic may need a boost to get started. Current Limit Start Tis starting mode is used wen it is necessary to limit te maximum starting current. Tis can be adjusted for % of full load amps. Full Voltage Start Tis mode is used for applications requiring across-te-line starting. Te ramp time is set for less tan 1/4 second. Description of Options ➊ Te following options are available in te SMC PLUS Controller. Only one option may be added to te standard unit. Pump Control Te Pump Control option is used to reduce surges in a pumping system during starting and stopping of a centrifugal pump by smootly accelerating and decelerating te motor at a selectable rate. Te microcomputer analyzes te motor variables and generates control commands wic control te motor in suc a way to reduce te possibility of surges occurring in te system. Te starting time is adjustable from 2 30 seconds and te stopping time is adjustable from seconds. SMB Smart Motor Braking ➋ Te Smart Motor Braking option provides motor braking for applications wic require te motor to stop faster tan a coast to rest. It is a microcomputer based braking system wic applies braking current to a standard squirrel-cage induction motor. Braking is acieved witout an additional contactor or power devices and provides automatic zero speed sut-off witout a timer, sensor or tacometer. Te strengt of te braking current is adjustable from 150% to 400% of full load current. Slow Speed wit Braking ➋ Te Slow Speed wit Braking option is used on applications wic require forward slow speed for positioning and alignment and also requirebrakingcontrol to stop. Slow speed adjustments are 7% (LOW) or 15% (HIGH) of rated speed. Slow speed acceleration current (available for 2 seconds) is adjustable from % of full load current. Running current is adjustable from % of full load current. Braking current is adjustable from %. Kickstart is not available. Accu-Stop ➋➌ Te Accu-Stop option is used in applications requiring controlled position stopping. During stopping, braking torque is applied to te motor until it reaces preset slow speed (7 or 15% of rated speed) and olds te motor at tis speed until a stop command is given. Te kickstart time is adjustable from seconds. Tis allows te motor to develop additional torque at start for loads wic may need a boost to get started. Percent Voltage 100 Initial Torque Kickstart (wen selected) Start Run Time (seconds) Current Limit Start Tis starting mode is used wen it is necessary to limit te maximum starting current. Te current limit can be programmed for % of full load current. Te microprocessor analyzes te motor variables and generates commands wic control te motor and reduce te possibility of surges occurring in te system. Time (seconds) Preset Slow Speed Tis option can be used on applications tat require a slow speed (for example, moving material into position). Te preset slow speed can be programmed for eiter 7% of base speed (low) or 15% of base speed (ig) in te forward direction. It can also be set for 10% of base speed (low) or 20% of base speed (ig) in te reverse direction witout a reversing contactor. 100% Speed Forward Slow Speed 15% or7% Slow Speed Reverse 10% or 20% SMB Smart Motor Braking ➊ Tis option provides motor braking for applications tat require te motor to stop faster tan a coast to rest. Braking control, wit automatic zero speed sut off, is fully integrated into te compact design of te SMC Dialog Plus controller. Tis design facilitates a clean, straigtforward installation and eliminates te requirement for additional ardware suc as braking contactors, resistors, timers, and speed sensors. Te microprocessor based braking system applies braking current to a standard squirrel cage induction motor. Tis overload protection is accomplised electronically wit an I 2 t algoritm. Wen coordinated wit te proper sort circuit protection, overload protection is intended to protect te motor, motor controller, and power wiring against overeating caused by excessive overcurrent. Te SMC Dialog Plus controller meets applicable requirements as a motor overload protective device. Te controller s overload protection is programmable, providing te user wit flexibility. Te overload trip class can be selected for class 10, 15, 20 or 30 protection. Te trip current is programmed by entering te motor full load current rating. Termal memory is included to accurately model motor operating temperature. Ambient insensitivity is inerent in te electronic design of te overload. Note: Te current sensing capability of te SMC Dialog Plus controller is disabled during bypass operation. Te Bulletin 825 Converter Module is required for providing current feedback in tese applications. Note: To acieve calibration, 70% motor load or greater is required at te motor saft for 2 seconds. Calibration is required wen a Bulletin 825 Converter Module is not used. Stall Protection and Jam Detection Motors can experience locked rotor currents and develop ig torque levels in te event of a stall or a jam. Tese conditions can result in winding insulation breakdown or mecanical damage to te connected load. Te SMC Dialog Plus controller provides bot stall protection and jam detection for enanced motor and system protection. Stall protection allows te user to program a maximum stall protection delay time from 0 10 seconds. Te stall protection delay time is in addition to te programmed start time and begins only after te start time as timed out. If te controller senses tat te motor is stalled, it will sut down after te delay period as expired. Jam detection allows te user to determine te motor jam detection level as a percentage of te motor s full load current rating. To prevent nuisance tripping, a jam detection delay time, from seconds, can be programmed. Tis allows te user to select te time delay required before te SMC Dialog Plus controller will trip on a motor jam condition. Te motor current must remain above te jam detection level during te delay time. Jam detection is active only after te motor as reaced full speed. Energy Saver Tis is a standard feature wit te SMC Dialog Plus controller. It is used to save energy on applications were te motor is ligtly loaded or unloaded for long periods of time. Te Energy Saver is a built-in feature of te controller. It does not require additional panel space or external wiring. And, it does not require a complicated setup procedure. Pase Rebalance Te SMC Dialog Plus controller incorporates, as standard, a dynamic Pase Rebalance feature. Te controller compensates for voltage unbalance by automatically adjusting te voltage output to balance te tree-pase currents drawn by te motor. Wen pase rebalance is acieved, motor life may be extended and production can continue witout interruption. Pase Rebalance is a built-in feature of te controller and does not require a complicated set-up procedure. Note: Pase Rebalance requires te use of te Bulletin 825 Converter Module and te 150-NFS fanning strip. Note: Te performance of te Pase Rebalance feature is dependent on te motor s loading and caracteristics. Severe imbalances cannot be corrected. Underload Protection Utilizing te underload protection of te SMC Dialog Plus controller, motor operation can be alted if a drop in current is sensed. Te SMC Dialog Plus controller provides an adjustable underload trip setting from 0 99% of te programmed motor full load current rating wit an adjustable trip delay time of 0 99 seconds. Undervoltage Protection Te SMC Dialog Plus controller s undervoltage protection will alt motor operation if a drop in te incoming line voltage is detected. Te undervoltage trip level is adjustable as a percentage of te programmed line voltage, from 0 99%. To eliminate nuisance trips, a programmable undervoltage trip delay time of 0 99 seconds can also be programmed. Te line voltage must remain below te undervoltage trip level during te programmed delay time. Overvoltage Protection If a rise in te incoming line voltage is detected, te SMC Dialog Plus controller s overvoltage protection will alt motor operation. Te overvoltage trip level is adjustable as a percentage of te programmed line voltage, from 0 99%. To eliminate nuisance trips, a programmable overvoltage trip delay time of 0 99 seconds can also be programmed. Te line voltage must remain above te overvoltage trip level during te programmed delay time. Voltage Unbalance Protection Voltage unbalance is detected by monitoring te tree-pase supply voltage magnitudes in conjunction wit te rotational relationsip of te tree pases. Te controller will alt motor operation wen te calculated voltage unbalance reaces te user-programmed trip level. Te voltage unbalance trip level is programmable from 0 25% unbalance. Excessive Starts Per Hour Te SMC Dialog Plus controller allows te user to program te allowed number of starts per our (up to 99). Tis elps eliminate motor stress caused by repeated starting during a sort time period. 65

Keypad Programming Programming of parameters is accomplised troug a fivebutton keypad on te front of te SMC Dialog Plus controller.
