1 Introduction 1.1 Goal of the market analysis The performed market analysis derives insights to future ways and chances for exploitation and actual commercialization of knowledge and products obtained from the me2 project. This market analysis implies both the study of the country-specific national (Portugal, the Netherlands, Austria and Germany) and European markets (EU-28 as far as possible) to identify target users or groups as potential buyers or licensees of the developed me2 platform, it s components and the Marketplace. 1.2 Structure of the report The description of applied methodology starts this report followed by an overview of existing competition in chapter 3 and implemented data in chapter 4. Chapter 5 reports the calculation results, whereas chapter 6 and 7 draw corresponding conclusions as well as recommendations. Accordingly, the market analysis results form the basis for the business model and business case development within the me2 project.

2 Methodology of the analysis The chosen methodology within the me2 market analysis is realized by the evaluation of three specific use cases. Thus, the methodology towards revenue generation will be described. For each of these use case and related services offered by the me2 platform it is assumed, that the user pays a yearly licensing cost. This is similar to a license used to permit access to software after agreeing to an end-user license agreement, and can be imposed one time or on a subscription basis. The license cost induced for each use case is based on (i) license costs for similar services, (ii) survey results where respondents have indicated their willingness to pay for the services, (iii) desired (or required) income of the aggregator, (iv) the value of the service to the user: as a function of a) annual savings and if applicable b) intrinsic value (ease of having a display with all electricity usage/production in one place, the good feeling from supporting the environment by using less energy). Accordingly, the following chapters describe how the revenue values were estimated / calculated for each defined use case. 2.1 Me2 platform for household electricity consumption optimisation Use Case 1 The main goal of Use Case 1 lies in the optimisation of electricity consumption cost at household level. The potential savings in this context are twofold: On one hand, saving can be achieved due to a lowered overall electricity consumption, triggered by direct consumption feedback and saving recommendations of the me2 platform, On the other hand, savings can be realised by shifting consumption to time slots in which electricity prices are lower (time-of use tariffs form the basis of this approach). The foreseen market analysis for Use Case 1 therefore has to identify possible saving rates of household customers in Portugal, Netherlands, Austria, Germany as well as at aggregated European level. Results of performed studies and field tests are used to gather required data (e.g. average electricity consumption, electricity prices, consumption reduction due to feedback etc.) for revenue estimation at a yearly basis. Based on these revenues, license cost settings are defined in order to calculate possible market revenues depending of different me2 market penetration levels.

2.2 Me2 platform for BEV and PHEV charging optimisation Use Case 2 Use Case 2 is an incremental extension of the me2 platform compared to Use Case 1. This functionality extension enables the optimisation of Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) and Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) charging. In general, activating a more flexible timing of the charging process could create revenues. For instance, the arbitrage of high and low electricity price periods (again time-of-use tariffs at customer level form the basis) or offering of balancing or grid related services may create added value to the energy system. Again, existing literature and study results are used to achieve an overview of possible market revenues at different market penetration levels as well as to set the corresponding licence cost. 2.3 Me2 platform for PV-generation and self consumption optimisation Use Case 3 A further extension of the me2 platform functionality serves owners of photovoltaic installations at household level. The main goal lies in the optimisation of local Photovoltaic-Generation and corresponding self-consumption at building level. Self-consumption is chosen as main evaluation criteria of this use case, as quite high revenue rates (the full electricity cost can be saved) can be achieved. Necessary data for this currently limited market application is described in chapter Me2 platform for other utilities B2B Case For Business to Business market opportunities this report analyses theoretical potentials for licencing the platform to other utilities (e.g. electricity, heat or gas utilities, EV aggregators etc.). As revenues a yearly fee per customer is estimated in order to derive theoretical potentials on European level. 2.5 Me2 Marketplace The developed me2 marketplace offers the opportunity to realize further revenues by gathering fees from vendors who sell products via the Marketplace. Again such revenues are estimated as yearly fees for vendors (in correlation to the generated turnovers) to derive theoretical potentials on European level.

3 Market barriers and competition This chapter deals with existing market competitors as well as a willingness to pay issues of the customers (related to already offered products in Austria, Germany, The Netherlands and Portugal which are comparable to the me2 platform). Accordingly, all project partners provided their knowledge regarding such existing products, The following tables summarize these competing products for each country including the related information sources. Regarding community features of the implemented product platforms it was found that only one platform (EnbW in Germany for Use Case 3) currently offers community related features. As a consequence, the strength of the me2 platform lies in these developed community feature set offering the opportunity to license the platform to several utilities. Accordingly, the Business 2 Business Use Cases are analyzed in this report as well.

4 Data basis This chapter describes the used data for the performed market analysis within the me2 project. For each defined Use Case of the me2 platform this data is presented in the following chapters. 4.1 Used data for Use Case 1 Potential buyers of the developed me2 platform enabling electricity consumption optimisation are mainly identified at household level. Therefore, Table 7 shows the total number of private households (in 1000) in the EU-28 countries as of These numbers are used to derive different market share levels as described in chapter 5.1. The license costs are assumed at 10% of those yearly savings. 4.2 Used data for Use Case 2 As Use Case 2 has its focus on optimisation of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) and Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles (PHEV) charging processes the total number of available vehicles is necessary to perform the me2 platform market analysis per country and the EU as a whole. The following chapters describe the used data (based on late 2016 numbers).

4.2.1 Austria In Austria the cumulated number of registered electric cars accounts for approximately 8600 BEVs and about 3200 PHEVs at the end of Figure 1 shows the yearly registration numbers New registra+ons PHEV BEV Figure 1: Number of registered BEVs and PHEVs in Austria (Source [2]) Germany In Germany the cumulated number of registered electric cars accounts for approximately BEVs and about PHEVs at the end of 2016 as can be seen by growing yearly registration numbers until 2015 indicated in Figure New registra+ons PHEV BEV Figure 2: Number of registered BEVs and PHEVs in Germany (Source [2]) Netherlands In the Netherlands the cumulated number of registered electric cars accounts for approximately BEVs and about PHEVs at the end of Figure 3 indicates a high growth rate of yearly registrations at PHEVs especially in 2015.

New registra+ons PHEV BEV Figure 5: Number of registered BEVs and PHEVs in the EU-28 (Source [2]) Figure 6 shows the overall market share of BEVs and PHEVs compared to conventional car registrations. Accordingly, the total car registrations in the EU-28 in 2015 accounted for approximately 9 million cars which forms the upper limit of the actual market range of the me2 platform for Use Case 2. The values in Table 10 were chosen based on the outcomes of the Austrian research project V2G-Strategies (see also Table 9). Achievable revenues of PHEVs were estimated at 10% of BEV as the battery capacity of PHEVs is often approximately 10% of BEVs. Even more, the me2 licence cost are set at 10% of yearly revenues.

4.3 Used data for Use Case 3 As me2 Use Case 3 intends to optimise local Photovoltaic-Generation and corresponding selfconsumption at building level available data for renewables development and building stock is used to derive the related me2 market analysis. Self-consumption is chosen as main evaluation criteria of this use case, as the highest revenue rates (the full electricity cost can be saved) can be achieved with this optimisation strategy. Accordingly, Figure 7 shows the available data on the existing terraced and single-family houses in European countries with available data. In total approximately 99 million buildings form the upper limit of the maximum UC3 me2 platform market potential in the EU Breakdown of the building stock by building type Terraced houses Single family houses All single family buildings AT BE-VLG BG CZ DE DK EE ES FR GB-ENG GR HU IE IT Figure 7: Number of terraced and single family houses or a combination of them (all single family houses) in European countries with available data (Source [3]) LU NO PL PT RO RS SE SI SK NL However this high market potential is significantly reduced due to limited availability of local PV-Generation at those buildings. The average share of PV-Generation compared to total electricity generation lies in the range of 3% in 2014 leading to an assumed me2 platform market potential of up to 2,5 million buildings in the EU. On country level, the Eurostat Shares tool (see [5]) was used to derive PV-Generation shares in % of total generation for Austria (1.1%), Germany (6.1%), the Netherlands (0.66%) and Portugal (1.2%). Based on literature findings for UC1 (average consumption and retail prices) as well as a PV-self consumption increase of about 25% due to optimisations at household level (see [13]) yearly average revenue rates are calculated per county. Again 10% licensing cost for the me2 implementation are assumed.

4.4 Me2 platform for other utilities B2B Case Data used for the Business to Business market potential calculations are performed based on the number of private households presented in Table 7. For further calculations a yearly platform licence fee of 10 cent/household is estimated (e.g. for serving households a yearly licence fee of 10 k would be applicable). 4.5 Me2 Marketplace Regarding the generated turnover via the platform by vendors an average turnover value of 20 per year with a licence fee of 1% is estimated. Depending on the number of households (see Table 7) reached by the vendors the theoretical potential is calculated.

5 results This chapter describes the use case specific market potential calculation results for the me2 platform both on selected country as well as EU level. 5.1 Results for Use Case Austria As described in the methodology of the analysis (compare chapter 2) for Use Case 1 a variation of license cost for the me2 platform has been chosen for a LOW, AVG and HIGH saving scenario. If 10% of the available households in Austria can be equipped with the me2 platform the market potential range lies approximately between 0.33 and 2.26 million of revenue per year (compare Figure 8) Me2 market poten=al: Austria Total revenues in [ /yr] Households: Market share in [%] LOW AVG HIGH Figure 8: Use Case 1 calculation results of the me2 platform market potential range in Austria Germany In Germany the market potential range lies between 5 and 26.6 million /yr, if 10% of the available households can be attracted to the me2 solution (see Figure 9).

Me2 market poten=al: Germany Total revenues in [ /yr] Households: Market share in [%] LOW AVG HIGH Figure 9: Use Case 1 calculation results of the me2 platform market potential range in Germany Netherlands In the Netherlands the market potential range lies between 1 and 2.3 million /yr for a 10% market share (see Figure 10). As the LOW savings scenario would not be able to pay of necessary me2 equipment, the market potential is set to zero Me2 market poten=al: Netherlands Total revenues in [ /yr] Households: Market share in [%] LOW AVG HIGH Figure 10: Use Case 1 calculation results of the me2 platform market potential range in the Netherlands

5.1.4 Portugal In Portugal the market potential range lies between 0.9 and 1.6 million /yr for a 10% market share (see Figure 11). Again the LOW scenario could not pay off me2 equipment. Me2 market poten=al: Portugal Total revenues in [ /yr] Households: Market share in [%] LOW AVG HIGH Figure 11: Use Case 1 calculation results of the me2 platform market potential range in Portugal EU-28 At EU level the market potential range lies between 6 and 106 million /yr for a 10% market share (see Figure 12). This potential still amounts to revenues of about 0.3 to 5 million /yr even if only 0.5% of European households implement the developed me2 solution. The possible market potential of Use Case 1 therefore can be stated as currently attractive compared to the other Use Cases Me2 market poten=al: EU Total revenues in [ /yr] Households: Market share in [%] LOW AVG HIGH Figure 12: Use Case 1 calculation results of the me2 platform market potential range at EU level

5.2 Results for Use Case 2 Use Case 2 market potential results are correlated with the existing BEV and PHEV registration numbers in each analysed country and the EU as a whole. As the market for BEV and PHEV is still young, there might be significant improvements in the coming years. However, the performed me2 platform market analysis focuses on currently existing registration numbers, as the functionality of Use Case 2 can be seen as an Add-on for households implementing Use Case Austria If the Austrian BEV and PHEV situation is considered Figure 13 illustrates calculation results of the currently available market potential for the me2 Use Case 2 platform. For a combined evaluation of both vehicle categories (BEV + PHEV) the market potential lies in the range of 6 to 66 k /yr for a 10% market share in Austria Me2 market potenaal: Austria Total revenues in [ /yr] BEV+PHEV: Market share in [%] LOW AVG HIGH Figure 13: BEV + PHEV - calculation results of the me2 platform market potential range in Austria Germany For a 10% market share of the me2 platform for BEVs and PHEVs in Germany the combined market potential calculates to between 161 and 429 k /yr as can be seen in Figure 14.

5.3 Results for Use Case Austria According to the available building stock in Austria the me2 platform market potential for Use Case 3 (optimisation of self consumption of own PV electricity) lies at 38 k /yr if a 10% market share can be achieved. Figure 18 illustrates the calculation results for Austria in detail. 28 5.3.5 EU-28 On EU level the me2 platform market potential lies at 6 million /yr for a 10% market share as can be seen in Figure 22. Compared to Use Cases 1 the overall market potential of Use Case 3 is low. This is due to the limited number of currently existing PV installations. Although this situation will improve with rising PV shares in the future, the main marketing strategy for the me2 platform should not be focused on Use Case 3 applications. Me2 market potenaal: EU (available countries) Total revenues in [ /yr] Buildings+PV: Market share in [%] LOW AVG HIGH Figure 22: Use Case 3 calculation results of the me2 platform market potential range at EU-level 5.4 Combined results for Use Case 1 to 3 Combined results of UC1, UC2 and UC3 markets potentials at EU28 level are shown in Figure 23. 29 5.5 Me2 platform for other utilities B2B Case Revenue results for the B2B Case are depicted in Figure 24. Also the licensing of the platform could deliver significant revenue streams, especially if the community features of the platform provide an added value to already existing products of other utilities Me2 market poten*al: EU Revenue poten*al in [ /yr] B2B: Market share in [%] Figure 24: B2B Case calculation results at EU-level 5.6 Me2 Marketplace Figure 25 finally illustrates calculation results for theoretical Marketplace revenue potentials. It has to be mentioned that achieved turnovers by vendors strongly influence results. However, if many customers are joining the me2 platform and Marketplace achievable revenues might play an important role in the business plan.

Me2 market poten*al: EU Revenue poten*al in [ /yr] Marketplace: Households reached in [%] Figure 25: Marketplace calculation results at EU-level 6 Conclusions As the results of the calculations in chapter 5 show important revenues options lie in Use Case 1, platform licensing to other utilities as well as the developed Marketplace. However, Use Case 1 saving scenarios tend to be optimistic in comparison to the field test results in Lisbon and Amsterdam. Thus, chapter 7 performs an adjusted revenue calculation as input for the Business Plan development. Regarding Use Case 2 and 3 it has to be mentioned, that due to the actually low number of EV owners and Prosumers in Europe the revenue options are limited. As this situation might change in the future, the me2 platform is designed to be extendable. In general, these market segments should be monitored for increasing market share developments.

7 Recommendations for Business Plan As mentioned in the previous chapters, the chosen assumptions of the market analysis strongly influence the revenue potentials of the Use Cases, B2B and the Marketplace solutions. As the me2 project team has learned in the field test, consumption decreases, and system load reductions are lower than originally expected. Accordingly, field test outcome related results for savings in Amsterdam and Lisbon (average 2% of yearly electricity consumption) were used for updated market potential calculations (combined Use Case 1, B2B and Marketplace) as shown in Figure 26. For this analysis also the hardware cost in Use Case 1 were set to 100 assuming that in the future existing Smart Meters can easily be equipped with meter-data interfaces. In general, it is recommended to use these values for the foreseen Business Plan development phase of the project Me2 market poten*al: EU Revenue poten*al in [ /yr] Marketplace: Households reached in [%] UC1 B2B MP Figure 26: Combined Use Case calculation results (UC1@2% savings, B2B and Marketplace) at EU-level
