Modern equipment and electronics create harmonics in the power system that cause poor power quality. Harmonics and low power quality are present in every factory, manufacturing facility, office building, institutional facility and even in the energy sector. Harmonics and low power factor are the two most negative roadblocks to good power quality because they reduce energy efficiency, reliability and cost effectiveness. 3 Harmonics Variable frequency drives (VFDs) are electronic devices designed to control the speed of motors by changing the frequency of the supplied power. There are currently several billion VFDs in operation and are used in a wide range of applications by almost all industries. Such drives create harmonics when converting voltage from AC to DC and can damage equipment and infrastructure by creating voltage distortions that affect the electrical system as a whole and could result in the following symptoms: Reduction in the efficiency of equipment Equipment malfunctioning Flickering Lights Excessive nominal current Premature breaker tripping Catastrophic failure of equipment Power transformer fires The effect of harmonics in electrical equipment is similar to driving a car with the brake depressed at the same time as pushing on the accelerator. The engine is working harder to maintain the desired speed because the brakes are slowing the car down. In this example, harmonics are the "brakes" on the electrical motor. The car will wear out much faster, more fuel is needed to power the engine and there is additional wear-and-tear on the engine. Elimination of harmonics not only saves on "fuel" (electrical power), but it will prolong the life of the electrical components.

PowerOne s advanced technology is a passive device that mitigates harmonics and also corrects power factor to almost 100% which addresses both of the most significant issues caused by non-linear loads. Typical passive filters and other similar products will reduce harmonics and increase power factor but only to a limited degree. Further harmonic mitigation and additional power factor correction can still be achieved. Active filters are a very common method of suppressing harmonics but only have a small effect on a low power factor. Active filters cost significantly more to purchase and operate and the harmonic mitigation is virtually the same as the P1Advantage TM.
