4 Softening-Point Scope of Application To determine the temperature at which a substance attains a particular degree of softness. Suitable for bitumen & bituminous binders, fi ller aggregates used in bituminous mixtures, binders for paints and varnishes and resins derived from naval stores. Summary of Method Two horizontal disks of a sample (cast in shouldered rings) are heated at a controlled rate in a liquid bath (up to 80 C in distilled water or silicon oil, above +80 C in glycerin or silicon oil) while each supports a steel ball. The softening-point is reported as the mean of the temperatures at which the two disks soften enough to allow each ball to fall a distance of 25 mm. Softening-Point - Ring & Ball Method - RKA 2 (automatic) Bitumen and bituminous binders: ASTM D 36 - AASHTO T 53 EN 1427 (DIN , NF T66-008) IP 58 JIS K2207 Filler aggregats in bituminous mixtures: EN Wilhelmi-Option: DIN EN 1871-F Test-Run The RKA 2 automatic tester is microprocessor controlled, with separate programs for testing in 3 bath fl uids (water, glycerin or silicon oil) and 2 Wilhelmi programs. An additional program can be modifi ed and optimized by the user. A backlit LC-display shows test conditions of the two test positions simultaneously with: expected softening point program selected actual bath temperature The following parameters may be entered using the membrane keypad: selected program to run temperature display in C or F Over-temperature protection is also included as a standard feature. The housing is durable stainless steel. A Pt-100 sensor measures the temperature. A low-mass heating device, especially designed for maintaining precise temperature gradients, is designed with infrared heater to protect the user. Stirring motion is program-controlled to optimize the heating gradient. The low-mass design of the heating and stirring assembly allows rapid and convenient cool-down by an effi cient fan. An automatic load-ball-holder ensures automatic application of load balls at the proper moment in the program sequence. Two light barriers detect the softening-point. The test result is stored until a new test is started. External output includes an RS232 printer interface to give a full report of the two positions, including: test result selected program 4

10 Tensile Properties Scope of Application The Ductility or Elongation is measured by the distance to which a sample will elongate before breaking when two ends of a specimen briquette are pulled apart at a specifi ed speed and at a specifi ed temperature. It may be used for quality specifi cations. Tensile Properties - Force-Ductilometer Method - DDA 3 (automatic) Elongation: ASTM D AASHTO T 51 - JIS K2207 (DIN , IP 32, NF T ) Force-Ductility: EN IP 520 EN IP AASHTO T 300 Elastic Recovery: ASTM D 5892 (ASTM P 226) - ASTM D AASHTO T EN (DIN V ) - IP 516 The Force-Ductility measures tensile properties on the basis of the performed force and the specimen strain. A specimen briquette is pulled apart at a specifi ed speed and at a specifi ed temperature until the briquette ruptures or a specifi ed strain is achieved. The Elastic Recovery is measured by the recoverable strain determined after severing an elongated briquette specimen. The specimens are pulled to a specifi ed distance at a specifi ed speed and at a specifi ed temperature. This is useful in confi rming that a material has been added to the asphalt to provide a signifi cant elastomeric characteristic. With the ductility machines of the DDA 3 series the afore mentioned procedures can be performed automatically. Except for recovery tests, 3 tests can be performed simultaneously. Molds Temperature Probes The drive is microprocessor controlled and uses a stepping motor and a feed rod. Both are located outside the tempering bath and therefore are not affected by corroding infl uences of the bath liquid. The tempering bath itself is double-walled with an outer water circulation system. The tractor cradle is made of stainless steel as well as the bath walls. If extremely thin threads are measured, the built-in circulation pump for the inner bath can be switched off. A very even and exact temperature can be obtained in the bath by the connection of a good coolant circulator and due to several temperature probes plus the transparent bath cover. Traction speed, elongation and pauses can be preset on the control unit. During the whole test run the tensile force on each line is permanently measured. The maximum tensile force may be up to 300 Newton s per line. With the DDA 3 a minimum tensile force margin can be set. When a bitumen briquette ruptures and the tensile falls below this setting, the pertinent elongation will be stored and the machine will be stopped automatically after all three briquettes have broken. There is a special program for recovery tests of polymer-modifi ed bitumen. The bitumen briquette will be expanded to a pre-set elongation, then the tractor (after a pause) returns to a position where no more stress is in the material, equivalent to the cut-up state of the specimen. If due to any recovery of the material a tension should occur, the tractor will move until there is a stress-free condition again. The control unit is equipped with two RS232 interface. This allows to connect a serial printer and a PC to record all test parameters, the fi nal values on each test line as well as peaks with their pertinent elongation. Further, the DDA 3 has analog output sockets so that force/elongation curves can be drawn. The ductility meters are also available as DD 3 in a basic version without force measurement. These models have a digital indication of the elongation only. 10

11 Tensile Properties DDACon-Software A program for recording, saving and graphic presentation of DDA values. Replacing analog line recorder or serial data-printer, allows to control the DDA by PC, the data-transfer to MS EXCEL or LIMS and simplifi es the download of fi rmware-upgrades. The sample status of up to 3 samples will be displayed simultaneously, indicating the traction distance or for Recovery-tests the percentage of relief and the total energy. Signifi cant points like the local minimum, maximum, turn-points of in- & decreasing fl anks and tangent-points can be determined automatically and displayed as diagram or chart. The numerical display of force or distance for a single point on the curve is possible, too. Individual diagram areas can be increased, curves can be hidden or indicated numerically. Since every sample will be saved under an individual fi lename, it is possible to compare 3 samples of different tests with each other. The evaluated data can be exported as ASCII-fi les. They include information like the sample name, fi le name, user ID, date & time, duration, program, speed, temperature at start & end, status and distance & force. Printing of numerical or graphic evaluations, including relevant point Located Points like maxima and fracture are possible on a usual printer. 14 Tensile Properties Scope of Application The Ductility or Elongation is measured by the distance to which a sample will elongate before breaking when two ends of a specimen briquette are pulled apart at a specifi ed speed and at a specifi ed temperature. It may be used for quality specifi cations. Our ductilometers are also available as an automatic version with force measurement - DDA 3. 16 Penetration & Texture 16 Scope of Application Used to determine the plasticity of a wide range of materials, as well as for the evaluation of such theological characteristics as rheopexy and thixotropy. Suitable for bituminous materials and hot-applied pavement sealants & fi llers. Needle-Penetration: To measure the consistency of semi-solid and solid bituminous mixtures. Rod-Penetration: To measure the apparent viscosity (Bitumen N ) of fi ller aggregates used in bituminous mixtures. Cone-Penetration: To determinate the consistency of hot-applied, fuel-resistant joint sealants with or without being immersed in fuel or oil. Ball-Penetration: To determinate penetration and the elastic recovery (resilience) of hot-applied sealants & fi llers. Summary of Method Penetration is the resistance which a material under specifi ed conditions of test provides against being pierced by a specifi cally shaped penetrator. Beside the confi guration of the penetrator used, prime importance attaches to such factors of temperature, time and load of test as are specifi ed by the different standard methods of test. A sample is fi lled in a specifi ed container and conditioned in a temperature bath. Then a standardized penetrator is vertically dropped on the specimen to measure the penetration depth. Higher values of penetration indicate softer consistency PNR Log Plastic Properties - Penetrometer Method - PNR 10 Bituminous Materials Needle-Penetration: ASTM D 5 - EN 1426 (DIN IP 49) Rod-Penetration (Bitumen Number): EN van der Baan The PNR 10, belongs to the group of conventional gravity-penetrometers used for the determination of consistency of highly viscous and plastically workable stuff. A test body is precisely lowered to the surface of the material under test, and then sinks into the matter by its own weight during a defi ned test duration. This penetration, which is indicated in Penetration Units of 0.1 mm per unit or directly in millimeters, and allows a rating of the plasticity or consistency. 18 Penetration & Texture Scope of Application Used to measure load forces as well as tensile stresses, which occur when a test body is pushed into the tested material or withdrawn. Suitable for bituminous materials, hot-applied pavement sealants & fi llers and cement. Summary of Method A texture analyzer measures the forces, which occur when a test body is pushed with a preprogrammed speed into the tested material or pulled out. The forces affecting the test body are measured and indicated in the form of a displacement/force curve or as a force/time function This allows to determine information about the aging, the maturity or the curing, as well as the estimated subsequent processing of a sample. Plastic & Elastic Properties - Texture Method - PNR 21 The PNR 21 is a compact but highly fl exible texture analyzer, that demonstrates the forces, which occur when the properly chosen test body is pushed into the tested material or withdrawn. Especially due to its easy and convenient handling the apparatus allows a quick and economical examination of the plastic & elastic properties of pasty materials. PNR 21 Rheotex uses different test bodies. It depends on the measurement problem, whether a needle, a cone, a cylindrical or platelike ram is applied. These test bodies are mounted to a support-arm with force sensor which is attached to a vertically movable carriage. The load or tensile forces, which affect the force sensor, when the carriage moves up or down are indicated on a computer screen as a force/displacement diagram or as a displacement/time function. The instrument permits to monitor curing and congealing reactions of adhesives, mortars etc. or to observe the behaviour of sealing matter and cements. The creation of test programs is very easy. Either made directly on the instrument or by using PNRCon software and a PC with Windows. The use of a computer does not only enable a much easier and more extensive creation of test procedures, but also allows their storage and reloading Testbody supplied with PNR Pro Main Units PNR 21 - Rheotex Texture Analyzer Features: User-generateable test programs including automatic contact of the sample surface alternating load tests or oscillating programs program loops with constant load pauses and no motion stages testing machine for texture and consistency examinations, with splash water protected membrane control panel with LCD showing actual test parameters and measured values directly, control and programming software PNRCon (used to record measured values, their graphic display, as well as to save test results and test programs), RS232-interfaces for printer and PC connection Supplied with: 1 clamping support (2 groove stones with bolds) 1 test cylinder (Ø 10 mm) 1 PNRCon software (for Windows). 20 Breaking-Point Scope of Application To determine the temperature at which a bitumen tends to break rather than to fl ow when stressed. Suitable for any homogeneous road or industrial bitumen. Breaking-Point - FRAASS Method - BPA 5 (automatic) Bitumen and bituminous binders: IP 80 - EN (DIN , NF T ) - JIS K 2265 Summary of Method A thin fl at steel plaque, coated with the sample, is fl exed under specifi ed conditions at a descending series of temperatures. The FRAASS-Breaking-Point is the temperature at which the fi rst cracks appear in the coating. BPA 5 ( ) BPA 5 Bending Mechanism Easy to Operate Due to its principle of construction measuring the bending force of a steel plaque coated with the material to be examined and the use of thermoelectric elements for the cooling of the test chamber, the Automatic Breaking-Point Tester BPA 5 offers a series of outstanding advantages. The handling of the BPA 5 is very easy. The operator only needs to place the specimen on the plaque support and the BPA 5 automatically clamps and adjusts the test plaque. The large LC-display, visible up to 10 m distance, provides the operator with additional instructions during a test. When a test is completed, the fi nal result remains on the display until a new measurement is started. BPACon Permanent Bending BPACon Glass Transition Temperature Versatility The scope not only covers the examination of bitumen according to the conventional FRAASS Method but also allows the user to adapt the test procedure to particular conditions (e.g. research of glass transition temperatures) or to perform a permanent bending program. With the Standardized-FRAASS-Test-Method the instrument detects a distinct variation of the bending force or a typical deformation of the force/ temperature curve respectively. Just as if the BPA 5 user could look inside the material under test. These striking force characteristics can even be recognized with diffi cult materials (such as certain kinds of bitumen), where ruptures of the bitumen coating cannot be observed visually. In particular with Polymer-modifi ed Bitumen (PmB), the Permanent-Bending-Program is an interesting alternative to the conventional FRAASS method. The sample is cooled to a specifi ed temperature and then the number of bending strokes is counted which are necessary to cause a rupture. This program, however, requires a PC with BPAConsoftware to remote-control the BPA 5, for storage and evaluation of the measured data. Thus, test proceedings (e.g. variation of the bending force) can be easily watched via a graphic diagram on the PC screen. For samples with a very low breaking-point a Rapid-Test-Program is included. It cools with an accelerated rate of 2 K/min in the beginning and then changes to the standardized cooling rate during the actual test period. In order to avoid unnecessary tests, with samples where the breaking-point is not known at all, the SEARCH-Mode, which is preset in the USER program, can be used benefi cially. The instrument works with a refrigeration rate of 2 K/min and makes a bending test every 2 Kelvin. The BPA 5 also offers the possibility to change test parameters like bending speed, cooling rate or bending intervals and to store them as a USER- Defined-Program. 20

21 Breaking-Point Data Output Although not required, the connection of a serial printer is recommended. The user will receive a test result for each fl exion or any other interval (time or temperature according to the parameters set by the operator). BPACon-Software Most comfortable is the use of the BPA 5 together with a PC with BPACon-software. This software package (for Windows ) includes the Permanent-Bending-program. Further it permits to remote control the BPA 5 by PC, to create additional user-defi ned test programs and to store or reload them from a PC. The measured data can be easily saved and evaluated on a PC in numerical form and as well as a graphical diagram. BPACon Standardized Test Printer Test Chart BPACon is, for instance, mandatory to run Permanent-Bending-Tests or when Glass-Transition- Temperatures are determined, where the trend of the bending force versus the temperature drops and the recovery trend serves as the criteria for the material under test. Economical The BPA 5 is a very economical instrument. It uses Peltier-elements for the refrigeration of the test chamber. These solid-state cooling elements require a light auxiliary refrigerant only and thus avoid investing in a bulky and high energy consuming cooler. Cooling Source Coolant Temperature Achievable Breaking Point (at ambient temperature of +20 C) Tap Water +17 C approx. -24 C Circulation Cooler -10 C approx. -36 C Circulator -20 C approx. -46 C Note: These coolers are designed to be opperated at ambient temperatures of approximately +5 to +40 C. Time Temperature Superposition and Viscoelastic Analysis Scope of Application Used to measure the linear viscoelastic properties of modifi ed or unmodifi ed (aged or unaged) asphalt binders in a temperature range of +5 to +80 C. Summary of Method For AASHTO MP1 tests a sample disc is confi ned between circular parallel plates and tested at a specifi c temperature. Dynamic shear is determined by applying a known torque to oscillate one of the plates and measuring the resulting strain. The phase angle, in radiants or degrees between the sinusoidal stress & strain, is measured, too. Resultant stress is measured in a strain control mode, while resultant strain in a stress control mode. The measurement of the rheological properties, or viscoelastic behavior, of binder, like range and degree of stiffness, elasticity, and relaxation times measured over the working temperatures, helps to improve the performance life of asphalt road systems. Rheometers measure the rheological data concerning the fl ow and the deformation behavior of substances by: - Rotational tests for liquids: Flow curves (shear stress and shear rate), viscosity function, yield point, thixotropy (structural decomposition and regeneration), temperature behavior. - Oscillatory tests for low viscous liquids to solids: Viscoelastic behavior as an amplitude sweep as a function of the deformation or load (or shear stress); as a frequency sweep as a function of time (speed or frequency) Time-dependent behavior (thixotropy, structural decomposition and regeneration) Temperature-dependent behavior (glass-transition-temperature, melting-temperature, crystallization-temperature) Jellification and hardening behavior - Creep and relaxation tests to investigate the viscoelastic behavior and material structure (e.g. molar mass distribution) of polymers 25

48 Flash-Point (closed cup) Scope of Application This method can indicate the possible presence of highly volatile and fl ammable materials in a relatively nonvolatile or nonfl ammable material. For the determination of the fl ash-point of liquids with a viscosity below 5.5 mm²/ s (cst) at +40 C (104 F) or below 9.5 mm²/s (cst) at +25 C (77 F) and a fl ashpoint below +93 C (200 F). Summary of Method A brass test cup is fi lled to the inside mark with test specimen, fi tted with a cover and heated. An ignition source is directed into the test cup at regular intervals until a fl ash is detected. For the FLASH / NO FLASH determination ignition source is applied to a tempered sample to observe whether or not a fl ash occurs. Used to detect the ability to yield fl ammable vapors. The FLASH-POINT is the lowest temperature at which the application of an ignition source causes the specimen vapors to ignite.
