6 NAPA Echlin EGR Valves What does an EGR valve do? The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve is an emission control device which helps maintain the combustion chamber temperature in an eort to reduce the formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx). The EGR valve draws exhaust by means of intake vacuum which dilutes the incoming air/fuel mixture reducing the temperature in the chambers bringing the NOx within acceptable limits. The EGR valve also reduces the engine s octane requirements and lessens the danger of detonation (spark knock). Where is the EGR valve located? The EGR valve is located on the intake manifold of an engine. Will a malfunctioning EGR valve illuminate the check engine light or aect vehicle operation? Yes, a failing EGR valve can cause a check engine light to come on, especially on the Ford DFPE (Dierential Pressure Feedback EGR) and those vehicles with electronic valves. The Camshaft sensor determines which cylinder is firing to establish injector synchronization and coil firing sequence in DIS systems. Crankshaft sensors set ignition timing, supply the RPM signal, and determine engine speed. Where are these sensors located? The Camshaft Position sensor is typically located in the cylinder head of the engine and has a cylindrical portion that inserts into the head. The Crankshaft Position sensor is normally located in the timing cover or on the side of the block with a cylindrical portion that inserts into the block. Will a malfunctioning Cam or Crank Sensor illuminate the check engine light or aect vehicle operation? Yes, a failing sensor can illuminate the MIL, and may cause vehicle stalling or a no-start condition. What are the common causes of failure? Typically these sensors fail due to exposure to high heat. How to determine if these sensors are malfunctioning? Look for RPM on a scan tool while cranking the engine. If the engine runs, a scope is the best diagnostic tool. In Coil-on-Plug (COP) technology, since each cylinder has a coil, the PCM controls individual cylinder firings for more precise ignition timing, reduced emissions and better fuel economy. The coil is connected to the spark plug with a stainless steel spring connector and protective insulating boot. Yes, a failing Coil-on-Plug can illuminate the MIL, and is likely to create an engine misfire condition. What are the common causes of failure? Typically the COP coils fail due to exposure to high heat moisture and oil as they are mounted on top of the engine. The coil windings can fail due to the large flow of amperage. How to determine if Coil-on-Plugs are malfunctioning. The output of the Coil-on-Plug coil can be determined by inserting a spark tester into the coil boot and cranking the engine over. Occasionally the wiring to the coil or the PCM can fail therefore the primary circuit to the coil should be checked for proper voltage and computer control.
