Mercedes-Benz Cars Committed to Combustion 1
Mercedes-Benz is committed to diesel and petrol engines. Recently, there has been a lot of negative publicity around the future of diesel cars. Modern, low-emission diesel engines, along with petrol engines, are a key part of achieving the reduced CO₂ targets and improved air quality standards set by the UK government and the EU. In the premium car market, diesel engines definitely have a future. 2
Contents. Mercedes-Benz still pioneering combustion engine technology Euro 6 our cleanest cars so far What our diesel technology includes What the experts say about diesel Why the published scrappage plans won t affect your new car Your new car already meets the Ultra Low Emission Zone rules Residual values guaranteed Peace of mind for you Quick link 3
Mercedes-Benz is committed to combustion engines. Mercedes-Benz has invested 3 billion in the development and production of a completely new diesel engine family. This new family of engines embodies over 80 years of Mercedes-Benz diesel know-how. It marks the start of an engine family that achieves new benchmarks in terms of efficiency, emissions and environmental compatibility. All of our current engines feature the cleanest technology we ve ever used. 4
Our latest diesel engine. One of the first all-aluminium four-cylinder diesel engines, the OM 654 was first introduced in the E-Class saloon in April Lower noise levels and vibration 24% less friction than predecessor, which means greater efficiency 17kg lighter, and emits 13% less CO2 and 80% less NOx 40% thermal efficiency, which is the best overall thermal performance in the market 13% better fuel consumption and CO2 emissions than predecessor engines Available in E 200 d and E 220 d saloon, estate, coupé and cabriolet Compared with its predecessors, the E 220 d delivers an increase in power to 194 hp from 170 hp and the E 200 d delivers 150 hp, an increase from 136 hp.
Current Mercedes-Benz diesel engines. Mercedes-Benz has applied the knowledge it gained when developing the new family of diesel engines to improve the emissions of current models. Sophisticated turbocharging and the further development of fuel injection and intercooling which improves efficiency and reduces fuel consumption Use of new materials such as chromised timing chains, results in longer life of parts and components The working range of exhaust-gas recirculation has been extended towards lower temperatures, making for lower emissions in a wider range of circumstances Increased efficiency of the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems by modifying the exhaust system design and applying new catalyst materials, again improving emissions All current Mercedes-Benz Cars meet Euro 6 standards 6
Mercedes-Benz Future Engines Continuous improvement also with petrol engines Petrol engine technology also takes a big leap forward in terms of efficiency and performance, especially with the launch of the new generation of 4 cylinder engines in future vehicles and the 6 and 8 cylinder engines for example in the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The new four-cylinder petrol engine, M264, features significant increases in both power and torque, whilst reducing CO 2 emissions by 7% With a specific output of up to 300hp with 48 volt technology and a Belt- Starter-Generator (BSG) this four-cylinder engine can provide the power of a previous six-cylinder unit. This generator delivers improved fuel economy and provides additional performance from the starter-generator Mercedes-Benz is among the first manufacturers to introduce the widespread use of petrol particulate filters, on the M264, M176 and M256 engines The new M256 in-line six-cylinder engines feature piezo direct injection with 200 bar pressure (250 times the pressure of a football) for the most efficient combustion process A new 48 volt electrical system supports fuel-saving features such as the internal-starter generator (ISG) which boosts the petrol engine from launch with an additional 20hp All current Mercedes-Benz Cars meet Euro 6 standards 7
Current Mercedes-Benz petrol engines. Our current petrol engines feature advanced technology including intelligent combustion systems that offer a combination of direct injection and multi-spark ignition. A great example is our 4-cylinder petrol engine, the M270, typically fitted in A- Class, B-Class, CLA, GLA and SLC models. The M270 offers both turbocharging and intercooling resulting in an increase in power output Third-generation direct injection features multi-spark ignition which means that after the first spark, up to four further sparks can be discharged in an instant. This alone can result in up to 4% fuel savings, depending on the driving cycle Demand-controlled ancillary units such as the oil pump save energy, depending on engine load and RPM, and increase efficiency The V6 turbocharged petrol engine, (M276) with hp is a highperformance engine designed for sports cars, that delivers a smooth and more powerful drive All current Mercedes-Benz Cars meet Euro 6 standards 8
What are the Euro 6 emission standards? (g/km) Euro 6 is the sixth incarnation of the European Union directive to reduce harmful pollutants from vehicle exhausts. The aim is to reduce levels of harmful emissions from both petrol and diesel cars. This includes nitrogen oxide (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (THC & NMHC) and particulate matter (PM). Euro 6 cars are 10 times cleaner for particulate matter than Euro 3 models between 2000 and (g/km) The NOx standards are set at 0.08 g/km and Mercedes-Benz Euro 6 petrol engine emission levels are below that at Source: Auto Express, Available from: [Accessed 31 May 2017]. 9
Emission Control Technology. AdBlue AdBlue technology helps reduce exhaust emissions using a technology known as selective catalytic reduction (SCR). An SCR system uses a solution of urea and water which is injected in tiny amounts into vehicle exhaust gases and breaks them down to nitrogen and oxygen gases that occur naturally in the environment. This technology is an effective way of bringing diesel engines up to the standard required to meet Euro 6 and features in all C-Class, E-Class, G-Class, GLC-Class. GLS, S, SLC, V-Class diesel models. Catalytic Converters - Three-Way Catalytic Converter The Three-Way Converter (TWC) has been the primary emission control technology on petrol vehicles since the early 1980s and modern versions have advanced a lot since then. The use of TWCs, in conjunction with an oxygen sensor-based, closed-loop fuel delivery system, allows for simultaneous conversion of the three criteria pollutants, HC, CO, and NOx, produced during the combustion of fuel in a petrol engine to environmentally safe gases oxygen, nitrogen, CO₂ and water. Catalytic Converters - Diesel Oxidation Catalyst For petrol cars, the regulations have been achieved in part through the use of the three-way catalytic converter and the move to fuel injection systems. For diesel cars, NOx and particulate emissions have been reduced through the development of direct injection engines and diesel particulate filters (DPFs). In most applications, a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) consists of a stainless steel canister that contains a honeycomb structure called a substrate or catalyst support. It is called an oxidation catalyst because the device uses chemical oxidation to convert exhaust gas pollutants (CO, HCs & liquid hydrocarbons absorbed on carbon particles) into innocuous CO₂ and water. 10
How are vehicle emissions measured? All cars sold in the UK are tested before going on sale under the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) procedure. This test measures emissions under laboratory conditions on a rolling road in a controlled environment. Cars are randomly selected for testing from the production lines by the legislative body. To make emissions tests more reflective of real-world driving, a new test procedure is coming later in Source: SMMT, Available from: Motor-Industry-Facts-2017_online_May.pdf [Accessed 31 May 2017]. The Real-World Driving Emissions (RDE) test will detect regulated pollutant emissions & be carried out on the road with a Portable Emissions Measurement System. The new four-cylinder E-Class diesel models were among the first to meet this criteria. 11
What the experts say. In Autocar s opinion, diesel car ownership must not be off the agenda, because a bedrock of diesel sales is necessary to keep CO 2 levels falling, the latest cars are clean and the industry needs the sales to fund the electrification that is coming. There is no doubt that the cleanest cars, with both their particulate and NOx outputs trapped, are EU6 models produced from We d choose one of those. Steve Cropley Editor-in-chief, Autocar [April 2017] We must do everything we can to further reduce CO 2 emissions. That s why efficient combustion engines will be an important part of the solution for a transitional period. It s also a fact that modern diesel engines emit much less CO 2 than petrol engines. Dr. Dieter Zetsche Chairman of the Board of Management, Daimler AG [March 2017] The automotive industry is investing significantly in new technology to address the issue of air quality, so we look forward to working with government to encourage the uptake of the latest, low emission vehicles, regardless of fuel type. Mike Hawes Chief Executive, SMMT [May 2017] A 2016 EU6 car emits less than 1% of the particulates a similar car did in For NOx, the output is well below 10%. If you read some media, you ll see headlines that say air quality is getting worse in cities. It s not. The data says it s getting better. But it s not getting better at the rate we d like it to. David Greenwood Warwick University, Head of Advanced Propulsion
Diesel Scrappage Scheme Proposals Is my car at risk of being scrapped? NO No confirmed diesel scrappage plan. Scheme would be targeted at the most polluted areas. Initial trial of10 cities before possible nationwide rollout. Scheme could be brought in within two years. 15,000 Euro1-5 diesel & Euro 1-3 petrol vehicles, out of 37 million cars on the road, may be replaced. Government scheduled to unveil Clean air zone plans by 31 st July EU6 diesel engines not planned to face penalty zone charges. Our modern diesel-engined cars would not be affected by this draft scheme which targets older vehicles fitted with technology that has been replaced.
Ultra Low Emission Zone & Congestion charging Will I need to pay a daily charge to drive in London? NO The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is an area within Central London which will require all vehicles to meet exhaust emission standards (ULEZ standards) or pay an additional daily charge to travel The ULEZ will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week within the same area as the current Congestion Charging Zone (CCZ), and was planned to come into force in September 2020, however, it s now proposed to launch earlier, in April 2019 Diesel vehicles that have been type approved as Euro 6 already meet ULEZ emissions standards This includes every new Mercedes-Benz car on sale today Source: TFL, Available from: [Accessed 31 May 2017].
