1 OSHA Indoor Air Quality Standard # The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has taken the lead on hazardous emissions in the workplace by creating and enforcing a CO (carbon monoxide) emissions standard that all workplaces must follow. The official wording of the stand is as follows: 'The CO (carbon monoxide) concentration of an enclosed workplace (i.e. a building with no fewer than 3 walls) must be no greater than 35 ppm in the ambient air (i.e. the air around the working machines that workers breathe) over an eight hour work shift." This emission standard is not a tailpipe standard although many OSHA inspectors fail to test properly as they do take their samples at the tailpipes of machines. The reason that OSHA has targeted CO is that this particular emission when exposed to humans will restrict our blood cells ability to absorb oxygen, as a result causing lethargy, lightheadedness and eventual suffocation. 2 Carbon Monoxide - Diesel vs. LPG/Gas CO (Carbon Monoxide) = The deadliest and most watched of pollutants. CO if not removed from diesel, gas and LPG exhaust can upon exposure to humans be very toxic and lethal. CO restricts the red blood cells to absorb oxygen molecules thereby suffocating the body. Lethargy and dizziness are common side effects of CO exposure and long term exposure can be cancer causing.
