This means to us to provide an even better support for the users in their workfl ow. 6 MEDTRON AG MEDTRON AG - Essential for contrast MEDTRON AG is an internationally operating medical technology company. With more than 4,000 devices installed worldwide, MEDTRON AG has become fi rmly established in the international market as the leading European manufacturer of state-of-the-art contrast medium injectors. The innovative and high-qualityinjector systems of the company from the Saarland (Germany) complete almost all modern examination methods which can be performed by the help of medical imaging systems such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and angiography. One of the aims of the competent MEDTRON R&D team is to combine improved diagnostics, patientfriendliness and economic effi ciency. Experienced radiologists and creative engineers work together amongst others to improve image representation by means of special injection profi les in radiology an aim which can only be reached by a fl exible drive concept for the injectors. Therefore, the R&D team is in constant dialogue with the users of the injectors and integrates customer requirements into the product development. To optimize examination techniques, development projects are also run in close cooperation with all wellknown manufacturers of radiological imaging systems and devices. On request, every contrast medium injector of MEDTRON can be equipped with a user interface in the corresponding language. Of course, MEDTRON offers a wide range of device-specifi c and high-quality consumables for its injectors. 11 With the Accutron MR, MEDTRON has developed the ideal partner for the injection of contrast medium and physiological saline solution in magnetic resonance imaging. The wireless, microprocessor-controlled double head injector contributes considerably to the optimization of the workfl ow and supports the user in an even better diagnostics. The double syringe detection increases the fl exibility and makes the correct operation, and thus the user-specifi c workfl ow, easier. The stable flow rate ensures a homogenous contrast medium enhancement during the whole examination. Flexible syringe volumes The Accutron MR supports the use of different kinds of prefi lled syringes. Easy Loading Syringes (ELS) with fi lling volumes of 65 or 200 ml can be inserted into the integrated syringe holder. This minimizes the expenditure of time and saves costs. Efficient, autarkical and immediately ready for use The Accutron MR, as well as all the other MEDTRON injectors of the new generation, is available completely wirelessly. This means that neither for the power supply nor for the operation via remote control cables are needed. The contrast medium injector disposes of integrated, high-output rechargeable batteries and a radio-controlled touch screen remote control. Thanks to this remote control, settings can be made easily from the control room. A quick installation of the Accutron MR is possible also in existing MR rooms since the MR room remains largely unaffected. The injector is autarkical and, thanks to its wireless data transmission, absolutely mobile and thus can be operated in the whole MR environment. The completely wireless use and the compact, slim design save time and space and contribute considerably to the optimization of the workfl ow. Intuitively operable and user-programmable The well-structured, self-explanatory menu navigation of the clearly structured control panel, which is available in different languages, offers a high level of user-friendliness. The injector offers an intuitive operation as well as the possibility to move the pistons manually and to start and stop the injection by means of an additional keypad. The well thought-out injector concept allows the storage of 80 profi les which can be edited by the user. Of course, MEDTRON provides all device-specifi c consumables. 11

23 Like all contrast medium injectors of MEDTRON, the Accutron CT-D fully meets the requirements regarding precision in diagnostics, patient-protection and economic effi ciency. The mains-independent double head injector for the injection of contrast medium and physiological saline solution in computed tomography is characterized by a high level of user-friendliness and the latest drive technology. Optimization of diagnostics The precise double head injection of the Accutron CT-D ensures a stable flow rate of contrast medium and thus ensures a homogenous contrast medium enhancement during the whole examination. Thanks to the possibility of changing the concentration of contrast medium within a multiphase injection, improved diagnostics (e.g. in a CT-Angio) can be achieved. Precise, efficient and patient-friendly The system for the optimized administration of contrast media and physiological saline solution considerably reduces the examination times and contributes to a signifi cant reduction in contrast medium consumption. Easy Loading Syringes (ELS) with a fi lling volume of 200 ml per syringe can be inserted into the integrated, heatable syringe holders. The real-time pressure monitoring allows a very patient-friendly use. Prefi lled syringes can be used. Efficient, autarkical and immediately ready for use The Accutron CT-D, as well as all the other MEDTRON injectors of the new generation, is available completely wirelessly. The contrast medium injector disposes of integrated, high-output rechargeable batteries and a radio-controlled touch screen remote control. Thanks to this remote control, settings can be made easily from the control room. The quick installation of the Accutron CT-D in every place saves time and thus contributes considerably to the optimization of the workfl ow. Intuitively operable and user-programmable The two recipients for contrast medium and physiological saline solution dispose of heatings which can be switched on and off separately and which keep the preheated fl uids at a constant temperature. The well-structured, self-explanatory menu navigation offers a high level of user-friendliness and an intuitive operation. On the injector as well as on the touch screen remote control either the injection parameters can be displayed (numerically) or, alternatively, the pressure curve (graphically). Thanks to the Auto-Hold function the user can preset that the injection will be interrupted between two injection phases and can be continued later. Integration into the diagnostic process With the CANopen Class 4 interface (Siemens) the Accutron CT-D disposes of an intelligent interface between injector and imaging device for control and data exchange. Moreover, the injector offers another interface for simultaneous starting of injector and imaging device. This increases the operating convenience and reduces the amount of possible operating errors. Examination procedures can be realized faster and the exposure of the patient to radiation and contrast medium is reduced considerably. The injection profi les and the scan protocol are managed together. Complex examinations consisting of several scans and injection phases can be performed more easily. Of course, MEDTRON provides all device-specifi c consumables. 23

61 HYGIENE and hygiene-relevant areas in radiology Basics Great importance always has to be attached to hygiene, especially in hospitals and medical practices and particularly in radiology. As regards hand disinfection in radiology*, Michael Forsting, director of the Institute for Radiology and Neuroradiology of the University Hospital in Essen and member of the board of the German Society for Neuroradiology (DGNR) and of the German X-ray Society (DRG), says that especially in radiology, an improved hand hygiene can play an important role in reducing nosocomial infections. According to Forsting, hygienic hand disinfection should be available in all workplaces of doctors and medical technical radiology assistants. Besides the discussion about the appropriate handling hygiene, the question regarding the standing time of consumables at the injector, especially in view of the approval of large contrast medium containers of up to 500 ml and even larger containers for physiological saline solution, arises again and again in radiology. Against this background MEDTRON AG has developed systems of consumables which offer the user a better workfl ow thanks to multiple use in combination with adequate product hygiene. Application of systems for multiple use If the used contrast medium application system has been approved as medical device for multiple use, the content of the contrast medium bottle can be used for several patients, provided that the hygienic conditions and the time limit, especially of the contrast medium, are observed. MEDTRON tube systems for multiple use (for a maximum of 8 hours in the field of CT and MRI), labelled with 8h, are designed in a way that retrograde contaminations or cross contaminations from patient to patient can be excluded as far as possible according to the current state of the art, provided that the products are used correctly together with the corresponding disposable articles. Additionally, the particle fi lters in the lower part of the drip chamber prevent particles from penetrating into the system as it might be the case for example when spiking the septa of the supply bottles. The way the particle fi lters work is completely mechanical and size-limiting. In order to simplify the examination procedure and to ensure the highest safety of the patient, all of our products for multiple use for CT and MRI are labelled accordingly.
