2 ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION PREVENTION: LOW EMISSION [LE]. For many years, we have been actively involved in environmental protection and the implementation of standards and regulations as they pertain to static and dynamic sealing systems. In collaboration with customers, distributors, suppliers, universities and technical institutes we were able to introduce and establish products with significant technological innovations into the market. Those products were designed and tested in our in-house R&D division. It is our goal to develop and manufac ture products and services in such a way that their environmental impact is as low as possible. To reach this goal. we employ relevant management systems in all our business areas. A clean and healthy environment is one of the greatest goods. An important step toward environmental pollution prevention is to reduce fugitive emissions from, among others, chemical and petrochemical plants. The following applies: Plants should be operated in accordance with Best Available Technology (BAT), indicating the most effective and advanced stage in the development of activities and their methods of operation to reduce emissions and their impact on the environment. Legislators have defined the relevant political and technological standard required in their latest amendment of TA Luft (German Clean Air Act). Another important step was the adaptation of the regu latory requirements to the framework conditions set out by the VDI 229 directive "Emission reduction indicators for sealed flange connections". Developed by the VDI commission "Clean Air", this directive is not only a guideline, but also ties in with the legally binding TA Luft, and became a technology standard after it was adopted. It is, however, not an accreditation or certification; its validity is geographically restricted and subject to technical and legal limitations. VDI 229 regulates the assessment of the technical seal of flange connections for liquid and gaseous media in systems, for which emission limit requirements apply in accordance with TA Luft. The standard applies only for metal and screwed flange connections in pipe lines, on appliances and fittings of all industry sectors specifically in the chemical and petrochemical sectors to an operating temperature of max. 4 C. VDI 229 outlines how and with which set of rules a flange connection must be verified, it defines sealing classes and delivers the required framework conditions for the calculation of a flange connection, whereby at least sealing class L, for the combination "flange-screw-gasket" with a specific leakage rate of ^-2 mg/(s*m) must be fulfilled. The advantage of VDI 229 is furthermore the increased focus on installation quality, which has now become part of the quality assurance system. IDT offers relevant training for operators and installation com panies. We furthermore offer hands-on support for our custo mers in their implementation and realisation of on-site quality assurance measures. In light of environmental and safety-relevant issues, and in compliance with environmental protection directives and requirements, we have optimised a number of our sealing systems to ensure full compliance with TA Luft requirements and the leakage verification calculations in accordance with DIN EN 59-(*); appropriately tested and optimized sealing systems carry our Low Emission environmental label [LE]. (*) Post-test calculations of pipes according to DIN EN 59- showed that the leakage rate of ^-2mg/[s*m] could be maintained with all [LE] sealing systems, even when using screw quality 5.6.
