4 rogram Note Aurora no had let her saron ed, And eams o early light the heav'ns o'ersread, When, rom a to'r, the queen, ith akeul eyes, Sa day oint uard rom the rosy skies - Virgil, The Aeneid, Book IV, Lines Aurora - the Roman goddess o the dan - is a mythological igure requently associated ith eauty and light Also knon as Eos (her Greek analogue), Aurora ould rise each morning and stream across the sky, heralding the coming o her rother Sol, the sun Though she is hersel among the lesser deities o Roman and Greek mythologies, her cultural inluence has ersevered, most notaly in the naming o the virant lashes o light that occur in Arctic and Antarctic regions - the Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis John Mackey's Aurora Aakes is, thus, a iece aout the heralding o the coming o light Built in to sustantial sections, the iece moves over the course o eleven minutes rom a lace o remarkale stillness to an unridled exlosion o energy - rom darkness to light, lacid grey to startling rainos o color The ork is almost entirely in the key o E-lat major (a choice made to create a unique eect at the ork's conclusion, as mentioned elo), although it journeys through G-lat and as the ork rogresses Desite the harmonic shits, hoever, the iece alays maintains a - un intended - right otimism Though Mackey is knon to use stylistic imitation, it is less common or him to utilize outright quotation As such, the resence o to more-or-less direct quotations o other musical comositions is articularly noteorthy in Aurora Aakes The irst, hich aears at the eginning o the second section, is an ostinato ased on the amiliar guitar introduction to U's Where The Streets Have No Name Though the strains o The Edge's guitar have een metamorhosed into the insistent reetitions o keyoard ercussion, the aesthetic is similar - a distant roclamation that gros steadily in ervor The dierence eteen U's resentation and Mackey's, hoever, is that the guitar ri disaears or the majority o the song, hile in Aurora Aakes, the motive ersists or nearly the entirety o the remainder o the iece: When I heard that song on the radio last inter, I thought it as kind o a shame that he only uses that little motive almost as a throaay ookend That's my avorite art o the song, so hy not try to rite an entire iece that uses that little hint o minimalism as its asis The other quotation is a sly reerence to Gustav Holst's irst Suite in E-lat or Military Band The rilliant E-lat chord that closes the Chaconne o that ork is orchestrated (nearly) identically as the inal sonority o Aurora Aakes - roducing an unmistakaly virant timre that on't e missed y aicionados o the reertoire This same eect as, somehat ironically, suggested y Mackey or the ending o comoser Jonathan Neman's My Hands Are a City Mackey adds an even righter element, hoever, y including instruments not in Holst's original: or the exclusive use o the lorida Bandmasters Association Do Not Distriute That has alays een one o my avorite chords ecause it's just so damn right In a iece that's aout the aaking o the goddess o dan, you need a damn right ending -- and there as no toing Holst Well excet to add crotales rogram note y Jake Wallace, used ith ermission lease credit Jake Wallace hen reroducing or excerting this rogram note ourth rinting, May 011 arts are availale or hire rom the comoser: John Mackey 6 Mount Vernon Street 1 Camridge, MA 010 requests@ostimusiccom WWWOSTIMUSICCOM
