1 International Studies Major Revised: Fall 2017 Checksheet Bachelor of Arts Degree UID: Student Name: Date: The International Studies major is designed to offer students the opportunity to undertake serious study in international politics, culture and society. The major combines intensive study of a foreign language with an interdisciplinary curriculum of study chosen by the student in consultation with a faculty advisor. The specialized tracks include: A. International Diplomacy and Peace Studies B. Area Studies C. Comparative Cultures D. International Economic Affairs E. Global Gender Studies F. Research/Intelligence Analyst Students are encouraged to consider spending an optional term or year of university study abroad in their chosen language. This major provides students with a degree relevant to careers in government, international law, business, and organizations, teaching, or related fields. I. Foreign Language (including 6 credits from 3010, 3020, 3110, 3120, 3210, 3220, 3230, 3250, 3260) Three years study of a foreign language; or demonstrated proficiency at that level or other as approved by advisor NOTE: All students who declare the IS major after January 1, 2015 must earn C s or better in their foreign language courses. This policy applies only to new majors and will not apply retroactively to those who declared the major prior to II. Core Course work Take at least 5 courses listed below: (15 credits) ART 2120 Art History II: Renaissance to Contemporary or ART 2140 Themes in Visual Culture EC 2500 Economic Systems of the Global South or EC 2900 Global Economic, Business and Social Issues (Track D requires: EC 2040 and EC 2050) REL 2320 Nonwestern Religions GEO 3300 World Regional Geography or GEO 2200 Human Geography HST 3900 Global Encounters PLS 2220 International Politics or PLS 2510 Comparative Nonwestern Social Systems WGS 2000 Introduction to Women and Gender Studies (required Track E) III. Specialized Tracks (21 credit minimum) Course work numbered 3000 or above should be emphasized. Close consultation with and approval of the major advisor is required. Other courses not listed may count with the approval of your advisor. Students are expected to choose a specialized track of study. No more than two-thirds of credit hours in the specialized track may come from any one department.
