CHAIRMAN S CHAT Can you believe we are into the third month of the year already, with autumn approaching soon. We have already had two successful outings for the year. It was so nice to see some new members at these two outings and of course our old members. Looking forward to the next outing and meeting some new members. 25th January 2015 OUTINGS Our first outing for the year was to the Chequered flag: in Benoni. A private motoring museum. (Thanks to Terence for organising this event) From the outside it looks like any other ordinary house, but walk through those doors! A motoring fantasy world. We had 36 people and 11 Morris Minors in attendance. Thanks to Steve, our host for supplying the braai fires and salads. A very warm welcome to our first time members, Les and Pam Sim and Gerhard and Val Venter and family. Gerhard was also the winner of our lucky draw.

2 We had some visitors as well as some new members. Anthony (Jens son), Isabella, Chris and girls, (friends of Gary). It was so nice to meet Len and Olivia Humphreys, Marc Post, Tom and Hyla Kirkland (new members). Hope we see you all again soon. Terence had some fun and games with the fuel pump of his Morris Isis on the way home, but thankfully they all arrived home safe and sound. FUTURE EVENTS 29 th March Rietvlei zoo farm Alberton 22 nd February 2015 This outing was to the Centurion society of model engineers. This was a very pleasant outing. The weather was perfect, the company awesome and the mini trains stunning. MORRIS MINOR SOLD AT RECORD PRICE The previous owner, who bought it for 656 in July 1968 when a gallon of petrol cost 30p, kept the car in pristine condition. He refused to drive it for fear of damaging it and locked it up in a garage for 47 years. Its owner, so worried that his pride and joy would be damaged, kept the car away from the road, opting to drive around in a Morris Traveller instead. But the Morris Minor enthusiast, who has not been named, didn't leave the vehicle to just collect dust, carefully looking after it to ensure even the tyres are still in top-condition. A BLAST FROM THE PAST A CLASSIC Morris Minor tucked away in a garage for 47 years with just 190 miles on the clock has sold for 17,000 nearly double the expected price. Grandfather-of-three Joe Drydal, 69, a retired car dealer from York, snapped it up after five minutes of bidding.

4 An invoice addressed to Mrs K Nyman's for her new Minor, bought from Norton Motors in Cape Town on 6th June Her trade-in allowance for her old Minor is also shown. Her car's chassis number is incorrectly shown on the one invoice as M/A S , but this chassis number refers to a 1956 Minor Series II "Splitscreen" 4-door saloon. However I have a feeling anything in that area would do the job. CONTACT: Albert Holmes @vodamail.co.za SAVVA Technical Tip 93 SU Fuel pumps I recently had a problem with a comparatively new electronically operated fuel pump (SU look alike) that was squirting petrol out of every orifice possible except the correct one the diaphragm had split. Unfortunately the manufacturer doesn t deem it necessary to keep replacement diaphragms so the entire pump has to be scrapped. They cost about R each and last about five years so that works out to R a year for a pump. So rather than rush off to buy a new one I decided to check out the old ones I had accumulated to see if any of them still had life in them. It was a rather interesting exercise most of them were SU s of varying ages, some I suspect even pre-war. Interestingly, all of them had working diaphragms but the points were working only sporadically. Fortunately, SU replacement points are still available (at a price that is). As you are no doubt aware SU s use two types of points i.e. single and double. The single points are fitted to very early models and the double points to later ones. Some of the later ones had double points but with a condenser fitted across the points to stop sparking resulting in much longer point life. As an experiment I ran a very old, pre-war single point pump which sparked away merrily and then held a condenser across the points and the sparking went away. The conclusion was that regardless how old these pumps are, even a pre-war one, it would be advisable to fit a condenser to stop the sparking. I contacted an SU agent in England to determine the capacity of a suitable condenser and needless to say they offered a rebuild package for UK pounds sis tog! Maybe someone can offer more professional advice regarding the capacity and voltage rating of a suitable condenser. The pump illustrated has just had new points fitted and came standard with a 0.05 SAVVA Technical Tip 94 Spray paints So often we need to paint a small item or do a touch-up and the easiest way is to use a tin of spray paint for the purpose it s far easier that switching on the compressor and messing up a spray gun. The only problem is the result. Maybe I just have bad luck or haven t read the instructions on the cans properly but I end up with runs, pin holes, and all kinds of hassles. Many years ago my results with spray cans were far more successful than today and I have a funny feeling the manufacturers have changed the propellant to meet with modern environmental requirements. Recently, I needed to paint various items on an old motorcycle which didn t justify firing up the old compressor. I looked at the array of cans I had on the shelf and the only black I had was an engine enamel. The thought of going to the hardware store for a can of lacquer was too much so I took a chance on using the engine enamel - the result was brilliant. I was so impressed I phoned the manufacturer to get their technical advice on the use of engine enamel as opposed to general purpose lacquer. Obviously the gentleman who answered my call couldn t

6 say too much about the contents of these paints but did indicate that engine enamel was the way to go. The cost is a bit higher and the colour range a bit restricted but in my humble opinion the result justifies the extra cost. I will never use lacquer again if enamel is available.
