5 Toyo s Proxes RA1 has been the standard for amateur road racers (club racers) because of its race winning performance and consistency. In the beginning of 2006, the SCCA announced that the Proxes RA-1 would be the Exclusive Tire for the SCCA Club Racing Spec Miata class in National Competition from 2006 through Track testing at Heartland Park Topeka were conducted by the SCCA to rate D.O.T. legal competition tires submitted by a variety of tire brands. The four-day test used an assortment of Mazda Miata racecars and was based on parameters which included durability, consistency, drivability and performance. Ultimately, Toyo s Proxes RA-1 came out on top.
6 The Sports Car Club of America, Inc. (SCCA ) is founded on grassroots motor sports and boasts the nation s most active membership participation with over 60,000 members and 112-regional chapters. The car club sanctions three major forms of amateur competition including road racing, solo and rally.
7 Toyo is a proud sponsor of the National Auto Sport Association (NASA). Serious racers can enter in various forms of competition from road racing to rallying and drifting. Toyo s Proxes RA-1 R-compound D.O.T.- legal competition radial has been the spec tire in many classes including American Iron Racing, Honda Challenge and Spec Miata Challenge. It has been the competition standard for both amateur and professional road racers alike.
8 The SPEED World Challenge is the premier road racing series in North America which features production derived sedans and coupes representing the world s top car manufacturers. Two classes, GT and Touring, each compete in a one-hour long sprint format virtually eliminating the option of making a pit stop for fresh tires. Every imaginable brand of modified sport compact runs in the Touring class. High-horsepower machines such as Porsches, Dodge Vipers and Corvettes compete in the GT class. Both classes share one common denominator over the course of the race, their Toyo Proxes RA-1 tires.

15 Shaving the RA-1 All tires have an optimum operating temperature For the Proxes RA-1 it is between F If your tires are running hotter than this range, you need to shave your tires. If your operating temperatures are below or within this range, then you do not need to shave. For most road race use, removing 2-4/32 is recommended. On more abusive tracks and in hot weather, reduce the depth even more. The RA-1 has a stepped tread design depth and the outer grooves disappear at 3.5/32

28 Heat Cycling Heat cycling will improve consistency and longevity of your tires. The first heat cycle is the most critical. Subsequent heat cycles do not cause any detriment to the performance of the tire. It is still possible to overheat heat-cycled tires. Assuming you don t do any other permanent damage to them and give them the minimum of 24 hours to relax afterwards, they should be fine for later use.

32 Understeer Corrections Use weight transfer to your advantage. High Speed. Increase front wing downforce. Too much front brake. Vehicle is TWITCHY at limit and hard to keep ahead of in the steering department. Lower front and rear tire pressures slightly. Suspension may be too stiff. Shocks may be set too firm. Tires may be old or hard. Vehicle may not have enough suspension travel. Vehicle may have a toe problem front or rear. Increase negative camber front and rear if possible. Oversteer Corrections Driver may be getting on the throttle to early. High Speed. Increase rear wing downforce. Too much rear brake. Vehicle slides and is easy to drive at limit but does not corner to full potential. Raise front and rear tire pressures slightly. Suspension may be too soft. Shocks may be too soft. Roll centers may be too high. Lower vehicle. Tires may be too hard. Widen track front & rear.
33 A properly set up vehicle will usually push slightly on corner entry, be fairly neutral at the apex (STEADY STATE) and exhibit slight power oversteer on corner exit. Tight courses may require more oversteer, fast tracks understeer. Items needed: Accurate tire pyrometer, tire gauge, notebook and tape measure. Suspension information books. Note: This is a sample of the methods used to correct various handling problems. Books have been written on this subject. Not every correction will always work as expected. Stiffer front sway bars will, in many cases, decrease understeer because of reduced body roll and better camber control. The best rule is to change only one thing at a time and keep notes. Follow these suggestions at your own risk, we listed them to make your racing safer.

36 1) Shoe polish (white color) is used to rub onto the shoulder area so you can EASILY see how far you're scrubbing the tires over the shoulder area. As a general rule, if you're scrubbing too far over the shoulder (and therefore starting to scrub into the sidewall area), you should increase inflation pressure to reduce the roll-over. If you're not coming anywhere close to scrubbing over the shoulder, you can probably reduce inflation pressure. Remember that if you're using the RA1 on a street car with stock suspension and alignment, you will almost always "kill" the outside shoulders of the tires, especially the fronts. This is true of front wheel/rear wheel/all-wheel drive vehicles if the suspension and alignment is stock. This is because they are all aligned to generate understeer for safety.

47 GENERAL INFORMATION Cornering Forces: Toyo compensates for body roll by placing steel reinforcements into the sidewall of many RA-1 + R888 sizes, stabilizing the tire sidewall and reducing tire flex. Jointless nylon belt edge reinforcement strengthen the shoulders reducing flex and irregular wear. Two high-tensile steel belts & a Jointless nylon cap ply further stabilize the tread and provides a more evenly distributed load across the tread effectively giving a larger contact patch.

51 Consumer Advisory and Safety Information The tread compound on the Proxes RA-1+R888 is designed to operate under racing conditions To achieve optimum adhesion levels the tread compound levels must operate within a narrow temperature range This temperature range is very difficult to achieve under legal and normal street operating conditions The Proxes RA-1+ R888 tires start with a tread depth which is lower compared to the depth of a premium all season tire The combination of shallower tread depth and temperature sensitive tread compound requires the user to be fully aware of the performance limitations of the tire under normal legal street use The performance limitations are particularly evident during low ambient temperatures or during times of the year when ambient temperatures fluctuate considerably as in the spring or fall periods Wet performance limitations are also evident when the tire is used on damp or wet roads when operating outside the optimum temperature envelope of the compound and when the tire is at less than full tread depth Do not store tires close to the source of ozone producing equipment or where electronic welding is taking place Toyo Tires Canada in no way endorses or approves of any form of street racing or illegal driving activity
