5 Introduction The HotShot MH-34 PRO system is designed to enhance driver all-season safety and convenience by removing windshield frost, ice and grime at the press of a button. During winter time, HotShot will work with any existing washer and wiper system to: Remove frost and ice Unblock frozen washer nozzles and wiper blades* Defog windshields During warmer months, HotShot will significantly improve the efficiency of any washer and wiper system by: Removing grime caused by insects, road conditions, and oil Extending the life of the wiper blades by keeping them free of wax and oil * The efficiency of the HotShot washing system will depend on factors such as the condition of the wiper blades, the type and condition of the nozzles, the wiper motor condition, the quality of the washing fluid, and the severity of the existing weather conditions. 7 8
6 Operation Automatic mode: Depressing the control switch for approximately 3 seconds, until the light starts blinking slowly, will activate the Automatic mode. The LED on the Control Switch will blink slowly (twice per second). HotShot heats the fluid for seconds and then automatically provides 6-8 applications of heated fluid, with 6-12 seconds between each application. The wipers will be operated automatically accordingly.** The HotShot device will shut down automatically after 2.5 minutes, or if the driver pushes the Control Switch button during the cycle. Automatic mode is recommended for: Ice and frost removal while car is parked. Severe driving conditions while driving (Ice, slush, mud, streaking). Defogging the windshield at any time. Some dripping at the beginning of the cycle is normal, since the first sequence produces steam to unblock partially frozen nozzles and to heat the washer fluid hoses. Standby mode: Depress control switch button for one second or less until the LED light comes on steady. This will activate the Standby mode. ** Automatic mode requires a connection to the wiper system (refer to Installation page 16). Without this connection the HotShot will work in Semi-automatic mode, which heats and sprays the fluid, but does not operate the wipers. The wipers must be operated manually by the driver in this case. 9 HotShot will then heat the fluid to a predetermined temperature and hold it until the driver activates the spray mechanism. The fluid will then be heated again, which takes approximately seconds (depending on ambient temperature and duration of spray). Recommended duration of spray is 3 seconds. In Standby mode, the wipers and washer pump should be operated manually by the driver. Standby mode is recommended for removal of snow, grime and mud, as well as ice build-up on wiper blades, during driving. The engine must be running while the HotShot system is in operation. While operating in both Automatic and Standby modes, HotShot will stop after pressing of the Control Switch button. To switch between the two modes, it is necessary to press the Control Switch button once to turn the system off, and to press it a second time (1 second for Standby mode, 3 seconds for Automatic mode) to begin operation in the new mode. NOTE: In order to protect your vehicle from electrical overload the HotShot is designed to only operate at 12.4 or more volts. Extreme cold weather conditions might impair your vehicle s battery from producing proper voltage at start up. If your vehicle has a weak battery or a defective alternator and produces less than the required voltage at idle, the unit will not operate properly. This may indicate the need to replace your vehicle s battery or alternator. To test this problem, rev your vehicle and try to operate the unit. If the unit responds and operates correctly, this may indicate a problem with your vehicles charging system, if the unit does not respond or operates incorrectly, contact technical support for further instructions.

8 Installation Steps Important: The HotShot unit should be located in the engine compartment based on the following guidelines: As close as possible to the nozzles, preferably on the firewall. As far as possible from the hottest areas of the engine. The HotShot should be vertically positioned according to the specifications shown in the illustration titled "Positioning Limitations" on the previous page. 1 Attach bracket to the HotShot unit and ensure they clip together. In some cases, it will be easier to mount the bracket without the unit attached (as explained in step #4) and attach the HotShot to the bracket later. 2 Connect the HotShot s 1/4 eyelet of the red thick positive (+) cable which contains the inline fuse, to the positive pin of the HotShot. 3 Connect the HotShot s 1/4 eyelet of the black thick negative (-) cable to the negative pin of the HotShot. 5 Cut or separate the hose between the washer pump and nozzles. Connect the supplied filter to the one end of hose that comes from the washer pump; connect the other end of the filter to a small piece of hose (provided). On the end of hose just connected to the filter, insert the one-way valve provided: (Note, be sure to connect the one way valve in the proper direction indicated on the valve by an arrow). Once installed, connect the open end of the one-way valve to a piece of hose (provided). 6 7 Remove yellow protective caps from the unit s input and output ports. Connect the hose coming from the one-way valve to the unit s input port. Connect the hose coming from the nozzles to the unit s output port. 4 Attach the supplied bracket to the desired location using four screws (provided). If there is no access to the lower part of the bracket, use only two screws at the top. If the installation surface is not flat, bend the bracket to fit the curved area. 13 Continued on next page 14
9 Route the two-wire harness (black and brown wires with connector terminals on the ends) through an existing hole in the firewall. (Note: some vehicles require to route the wires over the fender well to interior of the vehicle) Insert the two terminal leads of the wires into the supplied two-pin connector housing (as shown). Push the wires into the connector until you hear them click in then snap strain relief closed. Plug the connector of the Control Switch button harness into the wire harness connector. Find a convenient location on the dashboard for the control switch button. Clean the area with the, provided, alcohol pad. Place the velcro on the dashboard of the vehicle. 15 Secure the inline fuse by using one of the supplied zip ties. Route the red thick wire from the fuse to the battery. Connect the HotShot s 3/8 eyelet of the opposite end of the black thick negative (-) cable to the negative (-) side of the battery or any negative (-) body ground. Secure all cables and all wires out of the way of hot engine parts and moving objects with zip ties provided. Wiring Harness Connector Brown Wire Black Wire Brown Wire Black Wire Connector Housing 12 Locate the connection in the wiper system that will turn the wipers on in low speed when triggered by either a positive signal or a negative signal. This connection may be located. 1. In the power distribution box. 2. In the harness that connects the wiper motor to the power distribution box. 3. In the harness that comes from the wiper switch, under the steering wheel. To determine whether your system is triggered by a positive signal or a negative signal you must test all three locations with a test light by turning the wipers on and testing the wires one by one until the control wire is found and its polarity is determined. It is important 1. Not to connect the HotShot directly to the vehicles wiper system; it must go through the relay supplied. 2. Not to connect the HotShot unit to the wire that triggers the low speed of the wiper motor and the washer pump together. If your unit is triggered by a negative signal: 1. Connect the green wire from the HotShot unit to pin 85 of the relay, 2. Connect pin 86 and 87 of the relay together with a jumper wire and attach one lead from the two pins to a body ground of the vehicle. 3. Connect pin 87a of the relay to the wiper systems trigger wire determined by the above procedure. If your unit is triggered by a positive signal: 1. Connect the green wire from the HotShot unit to pin 85 of the relay, 2. Connect pin 86 of the relay to a body ground of the vehicle. 3. Connect pin 87 of the relay to a positive + 12 volts from the battery or positive terminal. 4. Connect pin 87a of the relay to the wiper systems trigger wire determined earlier by the above procedure. The remaining 5th wire is only to be used on select vehicles; those instructions are in our online database or may be obtained by calling our technical support number ( ). Loop the wire and secure it out of the way. Warning: The unit must be primed prior to operation. To do this, turn key to the Run Position. Activate washer until washer fluid starts to spray out of nozzles. Note: If the prior steps are not followed, the unit will over heat and may become damaged. 16
