2 INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION We are pleased to welcome you as an owner of a product of Rite Way Mfg. This product is the result of years of agricultural and engineering experience, and is built to give you many years of successful operating service. For the most efficient operation of your Heavy Harrow Bar we have provided this Owner's Manual. Its preparation is the result of years of experience gained in field testing and normal usage of this, and similar implements. We urge a careful study of this manual to provide you with a thorough understanding of your new Harrow before operation. We also urge your care of this manual so that it will be available for future reference when needed. If your manual should become lost or destroyed, a new copy can be obtained from your Rite Way Mfg. dealer. We will also be happy to answer any questions you might have concerning the use or care of this product. 1

4 INTRODUCTION SAFETY SUGGESTIONS 1. Read manual thoroughly before operating machine. 2. Study all warning decals on implement. 3. Most accidents occur because of neglect or carelessness. 4. Only the operator should be on the tractor during operation. 5. Connect the drawbar to the tractor before operating hydraulics. Be cautious of hydraulic oil leaks. 6. Always throttle the tractor down and use caution in attaching the machine to the tractor. Never stand between the implement and the tractor. 7. Be very cautious when unhooking the tractor and drawbar. The parking jacks must be securely lowered on firm ground or the hitch will rise abruptly causing serious injury and other damage. 8. Proceed carefully when performing maintenance on the machine. The harrow should be on the ground; however, if the nature of the work requires that the drawbar is in transport, being sure to use the lock pins. 9. The tractor drawbar should be pinned during transport. Support the harrow drawbar into transport position according to instructions. Maximum speed should not exceed 18 mph. If a truck is to be used to pull the machine it is strongly recommended using nothing smaller than a 3/4 ton with added weight. LIMIT TOWING TO MAXIMUM OF 25 M.P.H. 10. Exercise extra caution when working on hillsides or near ditches. 3

5 MAINTENANCE MAINTENANCE Repack wheel hubs after the first 500 acres; yearly thereafter. Visually inspect wheel bolts for tightness. Torque to 110 ft. lbs. after the first few hours of operation and frequently thereafter. Manufacturer recommends 90 ft. / lbs. to 121 ft. / lbs. EVERY 8 HOURS - Grease all pins and knuckles. (See page 68 for diagram) ANNUALLY - Grease wheel bearings and inspect for looseness. - Check wheel bolts for tightness. - Check tire pressure. Recommended pressure is 35 PSI. - Visually inspect all bolts for tightness and check for loose or worn components. ANNUAL STORAGE - Coat any exposed cylinder shafts with thick oil. - Ensure that the parking jacks are on firm ground. Failure to do so May cause the hitch to rise sharply as the jack pads sink into the ground. - Lock all applicable safety pins in place. NOTE: All capscrews that have locknuts that join moving pieces should not be tightened completely to allow movement. Note the top and bottom capscrews used to attach the spring pressure kit (Pg. 28, Item 12), the capscrews used for the rockshaft connector (Pg. 28, Item 4). 4

6 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Caution - Always choose a level area when folding unit either to or from transport position. Caution - Lubricate all pins, axles and bearings regularly to prevent premature failure of components. (See page 68 for diagram) Tractor - Drawbar Hook-Up - Keep hydraulic ends free from dirt - Use clevis type hitch on tractor 1. Retract the parking jacks and secure parking jack handle with chain from pin before moving machine. Failure to do so will destroy the jack handle. From Transport to Field Position 1. Unlock lifting and wing wheel cylinders. 2. Turn wing wheels to 45. Figure A. FIGURE A 5

7 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 3. Back up slowly. When wings are nearly straight with the centre bar, turn the wing wheels to 90. As the wings open, the swing arm (Figure B, Item A, Page 8) moves into position against the lock mechanism (Item B). 4. Ensure that the swing arms are firmly against the lock mechanism. 5. Carefully lower the harrows and check that the lock arm (Item C) is moving into its position around the swing arm. As the wings are lowered, the cable allows the lock arm to grasp the swing arm. See Figure C, Page 8 for field position illustration. 6. After the lock arm is in place drive ahead slowly and lower the harrows the remainder of the way down. From Field to Transport Position 1. WARNING - Tine angling cylinders should be completely closed before putting unit in transport position or tire damage may occur. 2. Stop the tractor before attempting to fold up the harrow. 3. Ensure the auto fold lock opens (Figure B, Item C, Page 8) as the harrows are lifted to the raised position. 4. Turn wing wheels inward Slowly drive forward. When the wings are nearly 90 to the centre section, turn the wheels parallel to the wings. 6. Check that the parking jack does not interfere with draft arm in transport position. 7. Lock lift and wing wheel cylinders with transport pins. 6

8 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Disconnecting From Tractor - The harrow sections must be either fully raised in transport position or fully lowered in field position. - Beware of sudden hitch up-ending. The drawbar hitch has a strong upward tendency due to the configuration of pivot points and axle positions. Always apply lifting pressure at the wings with parking jacks before disconnecting from the tractor. Note on 33' models the hitch clevis is heavy. - Also ensure that the parking jacks rest on firm soil to counteract the vertical tendencies of the hitch. - Block A-frame tires front and back before unhooking from tractor. This will prevent parking jacks from being damaged if machine rolls forward or backwards. - If the Harrow Drawbar is in transport position, put all lock pins in place. Cornering Field Work - Always make turns during field operation so that the inside wing wheel tire continues to rotate. Sharp turns increase stress applied to the auto fold system and inside wing wheel. Levelling Instructions - With unit in field position ground. - Measure from bottom of tubing on the A-frame to ground by the wheel. - Measure from bottom of tubing on the A-frame to ground by hitch. - Adjust hitch clevis up or down accordingly. Note: Hitch measurement maybe slightly less than measurement by wheels. 7

ALWAYS INSERT S.P.K. ON THE LOWEST SETTING (HOLE NEAREST THE GROUND ON WING S.P.K. LUG) 9

11 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS HARROW MOUNTING POSITION The rear of each harrow is adjustable via the five-hole lugs. By mounting the rear rockshaft in different holes, the harrow can be adjusted to suit particular needs and field conditions. The middle hole positions the harrow at near horizontal; using the top holes will apply increasing pressure to the rear of the harrow. FIGURE D 10

12 ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS - Study the general layout on Pages 17 through Assemble in a large open area free of obstacles. - Reference of "Left", "Right", "Forward", and "Rear" are always determined from the rear of the machine facing the direction of forward travel. - Grease all points either during assembly or immediately after. - Double check wheel bolts and all others after assembly. - Use thread sealant on all hydraulic connections that are not flared fittings. "A" FRAME ASSEMBLY 1. Block up "A" Frame (Item 2, Page 20) approximately 26" to 36" behind the hitch and axle mounting plates. 2. Mount axle and axle stub to "A" Frame (Item 3 to 14, Page 20) with 5/8" x 2" capscrews and stover lock nut. Mount 16.5 x 16.1 tires and then lower the frame to the ground. 3. Attach Perfect hitch (Item 7, Page 18) with 1" x 7" capscrews and stover lock nuts. Use a 1/2" x 1-3/4" bolt, spring lock washer and hex nuts to mount the hose standoff. (Item 4, Page 18). 4. Attach locking lug weldment to left side of frame (Item 4, Page 22). Use a 1/2 x 10 Capscrew & back plate (Item 16, 18, 25 & 33 Page 22), c/w 1/2" flat washer & stover lock nut. 5. Mount centre bar in field position (Item 2, Page 22) to the "A" Frame (Item 3, Page 22) with 1-1/4" x 8-1/8" pins and secure with 3/8" x 2-1/2" capscrews and locknuts. The flat washer (item 27, page 22) is to keep the centre bar centred as required, with little or no side movement. (This means that the main lift cylinders will have to be fully extended to install, item 1 Page 22.) 6. Add main lift cylinders (Item 1, Page 22) between "A Frame and centre bar. Connect hoses to cylinders making sure they are connected properly. 7. Assemble hydraulic lines to "A" Frame only as shown on Pages 29 & 30. Make sure lines are not crossed. Eg. - The line connected to the base port of the lift cylinder on the left side must be connected to the base port of the cylinder on the right side. This is very important as serious damage can occur if lines are crossed. 11

13 ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS 8. Install knuckles (Item 5, Page 22) to the centre bar with 1-3/4" knuckle lock pins and secure with 1/2" x 4-1/2" capscrews and 1/2" locknuts. WING ASSEMBLY 9. Connect the wing beams to knuckles (Item 5, Page 22) with 1-3/4" knuckle lock pins, 1/2" x 4-1/2" capscrews and 1/2" locknuts. The wings must remain in line with the centre bar for assembly. 10. Mount wing axles, tires and 2" x 12" cylinders. See Pages 25 & Attach parking jack on wing mount location. AUTO FOLD SYSTEM 12. Study the layout on Page 23 & 24 for the 33', 45', 55', 68' & 78' Auto Fold detail. 13. Place swing arm shaft and swing arm weldment (Item 9, 28 & 35, Page 24) into "A" Frame swivel pipe, using a machine washer. Secure with 1/2" x 3-1/2" capscrew, stover lock nut and lock collar. 14. Mount locking mechanism (Item 4 Page 24) against the stop on "A" Frame. Use 5/8" x 6" capscrews, X-Frame draft arm tie bar (Item 5, Page 24), spring lock washers and hex nuts. Align swing arm into locking mechanism before tightening bolts. Do not over tighten until both sides are aligned and centred. 15. Insert lock arm (Item 4 Page 24) into mechanism and secure with 1" x 5-1/2" capscrew and locknut, do not over tighten. 16. Connect eyebolt and spring between lock spring bracket as shown (Items 10 & 23, Page 24). 17. Connect turnbuckle (Item 11, Page 24 to lock, run cable through "A" Frame link, and bolt to centre bar. Do not adjust cable yet. 18. Attach draft arm clevises (Item 7, Page 24) to swing arms with locking collars and spacers (Item 31 & 33, Page 24) and 1/2" x 3" capscrews. 19. Bolt on draft arms (Item 8, Page 24) with curved lug shaft (item 37, page 24) on the draft arm clevis side (item 36, page 24) and a bent lug shaft on wing, using a 3/4 x 1-1/2 capscrew, 3/4 flat washer, Ø1 ID flat washer and 1 stover lock nut. 12

14 ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS HARROW INSTALLATION 20. Mount lift arms on the wings in the position shown on page 27 (Item 6, 7 & 8, page 28). Use 1/2" x 9-1/2" capscrews, flat washers and locknuts but do not tighten until later when all lift arms and rockshafts are in place. 21 Install rockshafts (Items 9, 10, 11 & 13, Page 28) c/w rock shaft bearing (Item 5) into lift arms as shown on Page 28. Use 1/2 x 3-1/4 capscrews, flat washers and locknuts. Do not tighten until all rockshafts are in place and lift arms are brought together to remove any play. Be sure the rockshafts with long lugs (Item 10, 13) are pointing upward and forward, when machine is in field position. 22. The rockshaft connector bars (Item 4, Page 28) should be mounted with 3/4" x 5" capscrews, flat washers and locknuts. Tighten the capscrews just enough so that the connector bar is free to rotate. 23. Bolt on the spring pressure unit (Item 12, Page 28) with 1" x 4" and 1" x 5" capscrews, flat washers and locknuts. The spring pressure units will hold the rockshaft arms up and ease harrow installation, make sure bolts are free to rotate. Refer to page 9 to set spring pressure unit. 24. Mount harrows to the front rockshaft arms with harrow pins (Item 15, 28 & 29, Page 28), 3/4" SAE washers and #9 hitch pin clips. Harrow pins and 3/4" SAE washers are used in the rear harrow lugs and secured with #9 hitch pin clips. 13

15 ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS STEERING HYDRAULIC SYSTEM 25. Follow Page 29 & 30 assembly for wing axle hydraulic lines. HYDRAULIC TINE ADJUSTMENT 26. Mount the tine adjusting bars (Item 3, page 41) to the harrow adjusting linkages (Item 4) with 5/8" x 2-1/2" capscrews and locknuts. Note tine adjustment bar double eye faces to the front of the harrow. 27. Study the appropriate drawing on Pages 31 to 36 for cylinder and hose installation. Attach the re-phasing cylinders to the harrows with 1" cylinder pins & cotter pins. 28. After all of the hydraulic system is installed, follow the hydraulic line & hose holder location details (page 43 & 44) to secure the hydraulic lines and hoses. OILING OF SYSTEM 29. Connect tractor to drawbar, adds hydraulic ends to hoses, and charge the main lift cylinders. Cycle the cylinders a few times to release trapped air in the system. This may need to be repeated several times over several days. 30. Charge and cycle wing axle and tine adjustment cylinders a few times to release trapped air in the system. Note: on tine adjustment cylinder to release trapped air, extend cylinders fully to allow oil to bypass. This may need to be repeated several times over several days. 31. With harrows raised, adjust auto fold cable so the swing arm shaft will just pass by the lock arm. Follow Page 6 for instructions to fold machine to transport position. Note when the machine is moving in transport, the wings will follow behind the centre bar and the swing arm shafts will exit the lock mechanism. 14

16 PERFECT HITCH ASSEMBLY Part # ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS The purpose of the Perfect Hitch is to allow the operator to always use the tractor draw pin and maintain a tight, flexible connection. The sliding V-block has a polyurethane cushion which is made to flex. The cushion also acts as a shock absorber to reduce driveline stress, giving driveline components longer life. Do not remove all the cushions! NOTE: INSTALL THE PERFECT HITCH COMPONENTS WITH BOLT HEAD ON THE BOTTOM AND THE TOP PLATE ON TOP. Always adjust the V-block to your tractor draw pin size by following these steps. 1. Remove top plate by unscrewing 3/4 bolt from bottom of Perfect Hitch and lifting top plate off. 2. The polyurethane cushion can be laid flat to achieve an extra 1/4 of adjustment. 3. If more closure is needed metal spacers (not supplied) can be placed behind the cushions to push the V-block forward and closer to the draw pin hole to tractor draw pin size. 4. Place tine indicator over bolt followed by washer then a 3/8 Nylon Lock Nut (or stover locknut). 4) Tighten down the tine indicator 7-1/2 from the end of the harrow adjustor linkage. Adjust tine indicator as required with tines laid back. 48
