SPC2000 Coil Selection Program User guide V2.1 Select the right heating or cooling coil for your project! Instantly size and cost your chosen coil with the SPC2000 coil-selection program. SPC2000 speeds the selection of water, steam, and refrigerant coils. The program tells you the size of the optimum heat exchanger for your design data - and can provide you with an accurate list price product cost. The software also allows you to store and print all the on-screen data as multiple selections. It also includes add-ons for generating data sheets in Microsoft Word (you must have Microsoft Word installed on your system), psychrometric data and fluid properties. Building Information Modelling (BIM) The latest version of the SPC2000 Coil Selection software allows you to output the selections to a Type Catalogue Parameter file that you can import into Revit along with the relevant coil object (available to download from within the software) which gives you a working model of all the coils selected which you can then use in your BIM model. For further assistance please contact SPC on Page 1 of 24

3.0 Selection The main screen allows you to Add, Edit, Copy, insert and Delete coils 3.1 Adding a coil Click Add to enter the main selection screen 3.2 Main Selection Screen To achieve a coil selection against your required data fill in all the white boxes and click Calculate. Hint: To avoid retracing your steps the first input should be the coil type. Choose the medium type from the drop down list in Physical Data. This will then reset the screen to the required mode. For further assistance please contact SPC on Page 7 of 24

Once type has been selected, choose heating or cooling mode. Heating for hot water, steam & condenser coils, cooling for chilled water and evaporator (DX) coils. This can be selected either from the icons at the top of the screen or from the program menu. We will now look in detail at the inputs on the selection screen: 3.3 Air Side Data All temperatures are in degrees Celsius. For cooling coils, the entering air will require either a wet bulb temperature or its relative humidity. Select which method via the option buttons: If this value is not known an assumption will have to be made, a typical design condition for UK is 28 C Dry Bulb, 20 C Wet Bulb / 50% RH. For heating coils just the dry bulb temperature is required. For further assistance please contact SPC on Page 8 of 24

The coil can either be selected by off coil temperature or by duty (kw), upon calculation the program will calculate the missing value. Again select method via the option buttons: Air volume is entered in m 3 /s. This is assumed to be standard air unless No is selected, then an alternative air density value can be entered. All other boxes will be filled in by the program upon calculation giving information on air pressure drop, face velocity and for cooling coils sensible heat ratio (SHR). 3.4 Fluid Side Data Water Coils Water temperatures are entered in C. The coil can be selected with either an off water temperature or by flow rate. If water temperatures are unknown, typical values are 82 / 71 for hot water coils and 6 / 12 for chilled water coils. Upon calculation, the program will display the missing value. Select via the option buttons: The percentage of glycol in the water can be selected, either an ethylene glycol solution (EGS) or propylene glycol solution (PGS) from the drop down box and then a percentage is entered. Finally the maximum fluid pressure drop can be selected, the program will then attempt to achieve a selection within that restriction. Upon calculation the actual pressure drop will be displayed. For further assistance please contact SPC on Page 9 of 24

3.4.2 Refrigerant Coils Enter the refrigerant evaporating or condensing temperature in C. The flow rate and pressure drop will be displayed upon calculation. If these values are not known a value must be assumed, for evaporator coils typically 5 C, condenser coils 40 C Steam Coils Enter the steam pressure in barg. The flow rate and steam temperature will be displayed upon calculation. Again if this value is not known a value must be assumed, typically 1 2 barg. 3.5 Physical Data Coil Type Select this first as it will reset other values on the selection screen including the selection to heating mode. If the fluid type you require is not listed, please contact SPC for assistance Tube Diameter SPC offer two tube diameters; 12mm and 16mm (5/8 ). 12mm is the default value and will be suitable for most applications. It will give the greater number of options regarding fin material and profile. For further assistance please contact SPC on Page 10 of 24

The 12mm tube gives a slightly more compact coil block, albeit at a slightly higher fluid pressure drop. If the resultant selection has too higher a fluid pressure drop then using the 16mm tube size will help Fin Material / Profile SPC offer a wide range of fin material / profile options. For the 12mm tube we can offer two profiles, louvred and rippled: 12mm Tube - Louvred Profile (Aluminium Fin) 12mm Tube - Rippled Profile (vinyl coated aluminium fin) For further assistance please contact SPC on Page 11 of 24

The louvred profile offers exceptional heat transfer which will result in the most economical selection. Fewer fins / rows of tubes will be required to achieve the selection. Conversely rippled fins offer very low air resistance albeit at the expense of heat transfer capacity hence an increase in number of fins / rows. For the 16mm tube just one profile is offered; the deep ripple. 16mm Tube - Deep Ripple Profile (copper fins) In terms of materials, aluminium fins give the most economical solution and there is the option to coat aluminium fins with Blygold to provide the best resistance to corrosion (SPC can offer a factory coated coil with a 5 year guarantee against corrosion). Varying thicknesses are available, 0.15 & There will be some restrictions in terms of the fin density available. Copper fins offer a slightly better heat transfer than aluminium but at the expense of cost & weight. The main advantage is the reduction in corrosion especially for cooling coils. We can also offer the coil electro-tinned after manufacture. This option provides a sacrificial coating to the fins which will prolong the life of the coil. Copper fins are available in 0.15mm thickness. Vinyl coated aluminium fins are also available 0.15mm only. Minimum fin density available 8 FPI. These will provide the cheapest option for corrosion protection Tubes high The number of tubes in the height of the coil will govern the exact finned height. For 16mm tube dia, the approximate finned height will be 40.5mm x no tubes high, for 12mm dia tube, 38mm x tubes high. Alternatively enter the finned height required and the computer will select the number of tubes that equates closest to the requested value Finned Height See above. The finned height excludes any sheet metal around the coil. See casing styles for more information. Above 32 tubes; 1223mm on 12mm tube and 1299mm on 16mm tubes; the program will automatically assume that the coil is split into 2 sections. Please contact SPC if you require larger single For further assistance please contact SPC on Page 12 of 24

section coils. We can manufacture with greater tubes high but this will be dependant on coil length, total weight, drain pan arrangements etc Finned Length Enter value required. Note that the sheet metal casing, headers and return bends will be outside of this dimension. The maximum length we can manufacture is 4500mm, though this again is dependant on number of rows and weight Number of Sections. The program will automatically split the coil into a number of sections following the rules above. Each section will be a separate coil with its own sheet metal and flow / return connections Surface Margin The default is 1. If a selection is required with say 10% extra surface area over the surface area required to achieve the required duty; enter Fin Density There are three methods of selecting fin density (measured in fins per inch [FPI]); optimise, maximum or fixed. Select from the drop box. Optimise The computer will select the minimum number of fins required. With aluminium fins the computer will advise that a thicker material has been assumed for low fin counts (<8 FPI). For further assistance please contact SPC on Page 13 of 24

Fixed Select required fin pitch from drop box. If a bare tube coil is required, select 0 FPI. Note: Fin spacing of less than 8 FPI is not possible with our 0.15mm thick vinyl coated aluminium fin. Maximum Select the maximum fin density from the drop box, the computer will optimise the selection based on this maximum value Circuitry There are three methods of selecting the coil circuitry, optimise, fixed or number: Optimise The program will select the least number of circuits as this will give the most efficient coil whilst attempting to maintain the fluid pressure drop within the given maximum. The number of circuits will be selected from one of our standard circuits: 1B Single serpentine circuit, only available for 1 or 2 row coils terminates in 15mm plain tail connections 2B Double serpentine circuit, only available for 2 row coils, terminates in 22mm plain tail connections H Has half the number of circuits as tubes high. Terminates in flow / return headers (manifolds) with typically threaded male BSP connections. P Number of circuits = tubes high x ¾. F Number of circuits = tubes high Q Number of circuits = tubes high x 1 ½. D Number of circuits = tubes high x 2. For circuit suitability & resultant connection position please see table below: For further assistance please contact SPC on Page 14 of 24

ROWS DEEP -> v CIRCUITRY B S S X X X X 2B X S X X X X H S S S S S S P X X X S S S F O S O/S S S S Q X X X X S S D X O X S O/S S S - Connections on same end. O - Connections on opposite ends. X - Not available. Fixed Select one of the above standard circuits from drop box. Number Enter the number of circuits required. Note that this option will result in a non standard coil, please consult SPC before selecting a coil with this method Number of Rows The computer will select the optimum number of rows to achieve the required selection. In rating mode, enter the number of rows required. (1,2,3,4,6,8,10,12,14 &16 available) Connection Size There are two methods of selecting connection size, calculate or fixed. Calculate The computer will select the required connection size based on fluid flow rate, number of sections and circuit type. On water coils the inlet and outlet will be the same; on steam & refrigerant coils, the connection sizes will be selected independently dependant on coil size & duty. For further assistance please contact SPC on Page 15 of 24

On larger water coils, the computer may select more than two set of connections. This will mean that the pressure drop is too high with a single connection into the flow & return header. Having two connections means splitting the water flow into the header and reduces the pressure drop through the header. Fixed Select the connection sizes required from the drop box Number Sets Of connections Enter number required. Most likely to be used for DX cooling coils where more than one refrigerant circuit is required. If the coil is selected with more than one coil section, please ensure that the total number of connections is entered. For a 2 section coil, 2 sets of connections will result in each section having a single inlet / outlet connection. 3.6 Other inputs Tube type Available for refrigerant coil selections. Select from drop box. Plain tube is the standard and cheaper option. Using the grooved (rifled) tube gives a slight improvement in performance. Only available for 12mm dia tubes Coil Arrangement For steam coils, gives options for vertical or horizontal tubes. Select from drop box. For further assistance please contact SPC on Page 16 of 24

Vertical tube arrangement is the preferred option as it assists the condensed steam to exit the coil. Headers will be top & bottom, steam inlet at the top, condense at the bottom. Connections can be brought out on the same side if required. Horizontal tube arrangement has headers either end of the coil with tubes sloping down from the steam to condense header. Connections will always be on opposite sides. Once all the inputs have been entered, click calculated. to perform selection. All missing values will be 3.7 Returned Values Face velocity For heating coils, the value should generally be kept below 3.5m/s and for cooling coils below 2.5m/s. Above these values the likelihood of noise or moisture carry over is increased. To reduce this value the finned area will need to be increased Air Pressure Drop This value will increase with velocity, fin density & number of rows. If the value returned is too high, increase the finned area or alternatively try 12mm tube, rippled fin if not already selected Moisture Carryover For cooling coils gives indication whether carryover is likely at the design conditions. If carryover is likely, please ensure that moisture eliminators are fitted see costing options. At above 4m/s moisture carryover is likely to occur even with eliminators fitted. Alternatively increase the face area to reduce the face velocity. For further assistance please contact SPC on Page 17 of 24

3.7.4 Duty Margin Gives indication of extra duty the coil can achieve over the design conditions entered. E.g. a value of 1.12 would indicate that the coil can achieve 12% extra duty. This is dependant on the extra fluid flow rate being available SHR (Sensible Heat Ratio) Gives indication of amount of sensible cooling within the total cooling load. The remaining duty will be a latent load indicating that moisture will be condensed from the air stream Coil Code Gives basic description of coil. The code is built up as follows: 12 - Tube dia, 12 or 16mm W - Coil type, Water (W), DX coil (DE), Condenser coil (DC), steam (S). F - Circuitry 12 - No. fins per inch 3 - No. rows deep 12T - No. tubes in height Finned length. Once complete, click the Calculate button and then the costing which will take you to the costing screen. For further assistance please contact SPC on Page 18 of 24

3.8) Casing Style We can offer 5 casing styles ) Economy (ref. drawing MS1002) - These can be selected for small heating coils, generally duct mounted, up to 20 tubes in height & 2000mm in length. Circuitry available, 1B, 2B, H & F, in 1 and 2 row. For headered circuits connection size to be ¾ or 1" BSP. The casings are 75mm deep & c/w 25mm flanges all round. The tubes are expanded into the case end plates & provide a satisfactory seal against air leakage ) Standard (ref. drawings MS1000/01/03/04/06/08) - These can be selected for all coils. They have 45mm flanges all round as standard & the tube holes in the case end plates are of sufficient size to allow for expansion & contraction of the tubes. Therefore the coils will allow a certain amount of air leakage. For steam coils 2 options are available - vertical & horizontal tubes ) Enclosed This design utilises cover boxes over the headers & return bends. The cover boxes are sealed in order to minimise air leakage and the design is regularly used in hospital applications and those which are subject to ductwork leakage testing. Enclosed cooling coils have an integral drain tray which continues under the coil headers and return bends and are the preferred choice whenever duct mounted coils are condensing moisture ) Unitary (ref. drawing CBH14412) [N/A SPCNEW] - To be selected where coil is being inserted within a defined space, usually within an air handling unit. Flanges would generally be supplied undrilled. Baffle plates are generally fitted to prevent air bypassing coil face, usually on airside face. Dimensional constraints as drawing CBH If cooling coils have integral drain pans then baffle plates should be fitted on entering and leaving air faces ) End Plates Where no casing is required, coils can be supplied with end plates only. These would generally be drilled to allow for mounting. For further assistance please contact SPC on Page 19 of 24

3.9 Drilled/Undrilled Generally casings to be drilled for duct mounting, undrilled for AHU mounting Case Material Select material as required. As standard select 16 gauge (1.5mm thick) galvanised steel. For stainless steel select 18g (1.5mm) 304 grade unless specified otherwise Drain Pan [N] - Select type if required. Sloping pan selected if specified. Perforated base selected on AHU mounted coils where drain pan is built into the unit. If pan is selected then specify the material requirements from subsequent menu if different to casework. Removable drain pans are available on enclosed case coils Eliminators If moisture carryover is then moisture eliminators are recommended and can be added to the coil. The program will update airside pressure drop. Customer may also specify that these are fitted Baffle Plates [N] - These are requested on unitary style coils. As standard these would be fitted to the airside. However for vertical tubed steam coils & coils with drain pans, baffles should be on both sides. Other options as specified/agreed with customer Nutserts [N] The can be selected if required in preference to plain holes. This is to allow casings to be bolted to ductwork without access to inside of flanges Stiffeners [N] Stiffening plates welded to coils to increase rigidity of the case. To be selected on copper finned cooling coils & large aluminium finned coils (over 4m long). It is recommended that these are not selected as SPC will design the casing to suit Insulation [N] - If enclosed casings are selected, insulation fitted if requested Tube Thickness As standard select 0.4mm for fluid temperatures up to 120 deg & temperature differences up to 30 deg unless specified otherwise. For all other coils up to fluid temperature of 170 deg select 0.7mm on 12mm coils, 0.9mm on 5 / 8 " coils. Note - these thicker materials must be used for steam and condensing coils. Overall depth is then displayed, the value includes for eliminators if fitted. For further assistance please contact SPC on Page 20 of 24

3.19 Saving a selected coil Enter the required information on the costing screen, insert a reference and a quantity and select Calculate (Cal) and then Save This adds the selected coil to the main screen where you can Edit, Copy, insert and Delete coils 3.21 Printing projects via Export to Office You can also Print/Save the selected coils by selecting Export to Office (If you have Microsoft Office installed) and then choosing Excel or Word Managing Projects There are options to start a New Project, Open Project (You have to browse to a previously saved.xml file), Save Project and Close Project (exit).
