2 The is an excellent general purpose gas pressure regulator for larger loas. Use it for natural gas, air, ry CO2, propane, butane, an other gases. Installation an Start-Up 1. Thoroughly purge inlet piping to remove irt an ebris that coul amage the regulator or impair its operation. If this cannot be one, a filter or strainer shoul be installe ahea of the regulator (see Catalog RDS 1498, Regulator Pressure Ratings). Make certain that insie of regulator an piping are free of irt, foreign matter, an other ebris. 2. Install the regulator. Make certain flow through the regulator is in the correct irection. High pressure connects to the inlet sie. Be sure that shipping screens or covers, if use, are remove. On flanges, tighten bolts evenly. On screwe connections, apply pipe ope to male threas only. Where require, the regulator may be inverte. CAUTION It is the user s responsibility to assure that all regulator vents an/or vent lines exhaust to a non-hazarous location away from ANY POTENTIAL sources of ignition. Where vent lines are use, it is the user s responsibility to assure that each regulator is iniviually vente an that common vent lines ARE NOT use. 3. The vent connection is an escape path for flammable gas an it must be locate an/or pipe so that potential ischarge occurs in a safe area away from builings, open flames, collection areas, arcing evices, etc. Regulators that are installe inoors or in a non-vente area must be vente to the outsie. Simply run vent piping from the regulator vent connection to a non-hazarous location on the outsie away from any potential sources of ignition. The vent piping must be connection size or larger an pipe to a safe area. The outlet of the vent piping must allow for the free an unobstructe passage of air an gas an must be protecte against the potentials liste in the instructions. 4. For outoor installations, it is recommene that the regulator be installe so that the regulator vent faces ownwar to avoi the potential for water or other foreign matter entering the regulator an interfering with proper operation of the regulator. 5. Install the control line. Run it from the Union shown at 60 on the regulator to the control connection in the outlet piping. The control line shoul be no less than 1/2 in size. It shoul be stury with aequate protection against breakage (regulators go wie open if the control line is broken). Pitch it to rain away from the regulator, free of moisture pockets. Where outlet piping increases in size near the regulator, it is generally preferable to locate the connection to the larger size piping. The Union 60 contains a small orifice (approximately 1/16 iameter). This orifice shoul not be remove. Also, make certain it is open an free of foreign material. 6 Check all connections for leaks. 2

3 CAUTION Turn gas on very slowly. If an outlet stop valve is use, it shoul be opene first. Do not overloa the iaphragm with a suen surge of inlet pressure. Monitor the outlet pressure uring start-up to prevent an outlet pressure overloa. 7. Put the regulator into operation as follows: a. Slowly open ownstream control line valve (A). b. Slowly open ownstream block valve (B). c. Very slowly open upstream block valve (C). 8. Set ajusting screw 10 for the require outlet pressure. Turn it clockwise to increase the pressure an counterclockwise to ecrease it. Only make this ajustment when gas is actually flowing through the regulator. After ajustment is complete, locknut 11 shoul be tightene firmly an seal cap 1 replace. 9. To shut own, carefully close valves (C), (B), an (A) in that orer. CAUTION 1. Keep pipe ope an all other foreign substances out of the control line. 2. Never install any type of automatic shut-off evice, which closes completely, between the regulator outlet an the ownstream control line connections. 3. The vent must be positione to protect against flooing, rain water, ice formation, traffic, tampering, etc. The vent must be protecte against nest builing animals, bees, insects, etc. to prevent vent blockage an minimize the chances for foreign material from collecting in the vent sie of the regulator iaphragm. Servicing an Ajustment General Notes (See illustration on pages 5 7) 1. Make sure the regulator is entirely epressurize before servicing. 2. A quick visual inspection of the valve can be mae by removing inspection plates 38 from the sies of the boy. These also provie greatly improve access to the valve when servicing or ajusting. 3. Carefully note location an position of isassemble parts to be certain reassembly is correct. Inspect each one carefully an replace those that are worn or amage or otherwise unsatisfactory. 4. The iaphragm 20, the springs 14, an all other parts from the iaphragm up (except the 24 stem) are fully interchangeable with the Moel S Regulator. Valve an boy parts are interchangeable with other 441 Regulators (441-S, 441-X57, 441-VPC.). 5. Use lubricants sparingly an with care to avoi exposing tacky surfaces to the gas stream. Such surfaces coul cause irt accumulation on close clearance parts. Use moly or silicone type lubricants. Avoi the use of petroleum base types. Lubricate the stem 24, the guie 50h an stem O-ring 23 with ry silicone lubricant to help assure free movement an a tight seal. An application of silicone base lubricant to the other O-rings an the tetraseals in the regulator will also help assure their tightness. 6. There is one screwe connection that must be loose. Carefully note which one it is. All other connections must be firm an tight. On 2" an 3 regulators, the loose connection is between parts 50e an 24. On 4 an 6 regulators, the loose connection is between parts 50i an 24. This loose connection shoul be screwe together until it bottoms, then be backe off 1/2 to 1 full turn. 7. When replacing orifices, tighten cap screws evenly an carefully to avoi stripping female threas in boy casting. 8. When changing to ifferent size valve in 4 an 6 regulators, be sure to use the correct travel stop (Ill. No. 54). For ientification, last igit of part number is recesse into one en of travel stop. CAUTION Regulators are pressure control evices with numerous moving parts subject to wear which is epenent upon particular operating conitions. To assure continuous satisfactory operation, a perioic inspection scheule must be ahere to with the frequency of inspection etermine by the severity of service an applicable laws an regulations. To Remove Valves 1. Remove seal cap 1, back off ajusting screw 10, remove housing cover 5 an spring 14 (also, 14a an 14b if use). 2. Remove bottom plate 33, an sie plates Insert an Allen wrench through sie inspection opening an loosen Allen screw 50g. 4. Unscrew lower valve assembly an remove through bottom opening. (50h unscrews from 50e). 5. Unscrew upper valve assembly an remove through sie opening. (50e or 50i unscrews from 24). 3

If upper valve assembly is too large to remove through sie opening, then remove it through bottom opening by also removing outlet orifice 29, (remove cap screws to remove orifice, an if tight, jack out using cap screws in jacking holes). b. Entire valve assembly may be remove intact through bottom opening by also removing orifice 29. This metho leaves the lock-up ajustment unisturbe. c. Use care with orifice O-ring To isassemble upper an/or lower valve assembly, remove nuts 50a. To Replace an Ajust Valves 1. Assemble upper valve assembly (parts 50a, 50b, 50c, 50, 50e, 50f, 50g, 50i), an lower valve assembly (parts 50a, 50b, 50c, 50, 50h). Firmly tighten nuts 50a. Also, 50i shoul be firmly tightene against 50a. 2. Insert upper valve assembly an screw into place. Screw 50e or 50i into 24 until it bottoms. Then back off 1/2 to 1 turn - this is important. 3. If orifice 29 was remove, reinstall it. 4. Insert lower valve assembly an screw into place by a few turns (50h screws into 50e). 5. Turn upper valve assembly so Allen screw 50g is accessible through sie inspection opening. 6. Make the valve lock-up ajustment as follows: a. Hol upper valve against its seat. This can be one by han, reaching through sie inspection opening. b. While holing the upper valve against its seat, screw lower valve assembly upwars until the lower valve also touches its seat. When both upper an lower valves are touching their seats, they are correctly ajuste for tight lock-up. c. Firmly tighten Allen screw 50g. This locks the ajustment by evenly an tightly locking 50h an 50e together. Note: If the entire valve assembly was remove intact an Allen screw 50g has not been loosene, the assembly may be reinstalle without making the lock-up ajustment. 7. Screw entire valve assembly up (50e or 50i screws into 24 until it bottoms). Then back off 1/2 to 1 turn this is important. 8. Replace sie plates Replace bottom plate 33. Match bottom en of 50h into 31 an/or 32, then turn bottom plate either way to first matching bolt hole position. To Remove Orifices 1. Remove orifice 29 per applicable steps 1 through 5 uner section To Remove Valves. 2. Remove inlet orifice 28 as follows: a. Remove seal cap 1, back off ajusting screw 10, remove housing cover 5, an remove spring. b. Remove bottom plate 33 an then unscrew valve assembly by grasping 50h an turning. (50e or 50i unscrews from 24). c. Remove iaphragm case assembly by first opening union 60 an removing cap screws 34.. Remove cap screws an remove inlet orifice 28. If orifice is tight, jack out cap screws in jacking holes. Use care with O-ring 27. e. When replacing iaphragm assembly, the threae connection between 24 an 50e or 50i shoul be screwe together until it bottoms. Then backe off 1/2 to 1 turn - this is important. To Change Spring 1. Remove seal cap 1, back off ajusting screw 10, remove housing cover 5, an remove spring. 2. Insert the new spring. Be sure it nests correctly into part 19 an travel inicator bracket 45k is in place. Also, make a visual inspection of iaphragm 20 before inserting the spring to be sure the roll-out is uniform an in place. (Use a flashlight if necessary). 3. Complete steps 7, 8, an 9 uner To Assemble S. To Service Diaphragm 1. Remove seal cap 1, back off ajusting screw 10, remove housing cover 5, an remove spring 14. If use, also remove spring 14a an 14b. 2. Remove bolts 42. Then carefully remove upper iaphragm case Turn iaphragm assembly counterclockwise until 24 unscrews from 50e or 50i, then remove assembly an inspect iaphragm. 4. If a new iaphragm 20 is require, remove nut 16 an isassemble. 5. When reassembling, be sure that fabric sie of iaphragm 20 will be towar the vent sie of the regulator an the rubber sie of iaphragm towar the pressure sie. The gasket is always place on the spring sie of the iaphragm. 6. Screw iaphragm assembly back into place (24 screws into 50e or 50i until it bottoms). Then back off 1/2 to 1 turn this is important. 7. Fol roll into roll-out iaphragm an then carefully reinstall upper iaphragm case 8. Diaphragm must not be pinche between upper an lower cases 8 an 40 or 40a. Also, roll-out loop must be uniformly full an even. It shoul be in place as shown on the cross-section rawing. Tighten bolts 42 evenly. 8. Replace spring, etc., per steps 6 thru 9 uner To Assemble S. 4

5 To Assemble S 1. Install orifice 28 through top opening. 2. Install valve assembly an orifice 29 per applicable steps 1 through 6 uner To Replace an Ajust Valves (except that 50e or 50i oes not yet screw into 24). 3. Install centerpiece an lower iaphragm case 36 an 40 or 40a. 4. Install iaphragm assembly an case per steps 5 through 7 uner To Service Diaphragm. 5. Replace bottom plate 33. Match bottom en of 50h into 31 an/or 32, then rotate bottom plate either way to the first matching bolt hole position. 6. Inset the spring. Be sure it nests correctly onto part 19 an travel inicator bracket 45k is in place. Also, make a visual inspection of iaphragm 20 before inserting the spring to be sure the roll-out is uniform an in place (use a flashlight if necessary). 7. Insert top spring button 12. Be sure it is neste correctly on the spring. Also, make sure that ball 13 is in place. 8. Install housing cover 5. Be sure the lower en of ajusting screw 10 fits into the hole in button Set ajusting screw 10 for esire outlet pressure. Firmly tighten nut 11 an replace seal cap Over Pressurization Protection Protection must be provie for the ownstream piping system an the regulator s low pressure chambers to assure against the potential over pressurization ue to a regulator malfunction or a failure of the regulator to lock-up. The allowable over pressurization is the lowest of the maximum pressures permitte by feeral coes, state coes, Sensus bulletin RDS-1498, or other applicable stanars. The Metho of proviing over pressure protection coul be a relief valve, a monitor regulator, a shut-off evice or any similar evice. Temperature Limits The can be use for flowing temperatures from -20 F to 150 F. Damage or otherwise unsatisfactory parts must be repaire or replace before returning the regulator to service. The maximum pressure which the iaphragm may be subjecte to uner abnormal conitions without causing internal amage is the set-point + 25 psi. If the pressure on the iaphragm excees set-point by more than + 25 psi, the regulator must be remove from service an inspecte. Damage or otherwise unsatisfactory parts must be repaire or replace before returning the regulator to service. The set-point is the outlet pressure the regulator is ajuste to eliver. The maximum pressure that can be safely containe by the iaphragm case is 175 psi. Safely containe means no leakage as well as no bursting. Before using any of the above ata, make sure this entire section is clearly unerstoo. Other Gases The is mainly use on natural gas services; however, this regulator will perform equally as well on other gases. When using the on other gases, the regulator capacities must be ajuste using the following correction factors: Type of Gas Correction Factor Air (specific gravity 1.0) 0.77 Propane (specific gravity 1.53) BTU Propane-Air Mixture (specific gravity 1.20) 0.71 Nitrogen (specific gravity 0.97) 0.79 Dry CO2 (specific gravity 1.52) 0.63 For other non-corrosive gases use the following formula: 0.60 Correction Factor = Specific gravity of the gas For use with gases not liste above, please contact your Sensus representative or Inustrial Distributor for recommenations.
