5 POLYSOMNOGRAPHY / Air flow s THERMO AIR FLOW SENSORS A small voltage is produced if there is a minor temperature change at the thermo air flow sensors, which the polygraph detects and records. The thermocouples of the air flow sensors are rugged, steady and generate a continuous breath flow signal. 18 POLYSOMNOGRAPHY / Cup electrodes Cup electrodes In choosing the Cup electrodes you use, you should consider not only the physical characteristics of the electrode materials, but also the shape of the electrodes. Electrodes with a very high shape require substantially more contact agent. These electrodes often have a very flat and thin edge. Electrodes with a flat shape and wide edge offer the largest direct skin contact and require substantially less contact agent. All Cup electrodes are suitable for use in EMG, EP and EEG. The plug-in systems are compatible with all EMG, EP and EEG equipment. IMPORTANT Because of the plethora of possible combinations such as: type, shape, size. materials, cable lengths and plug configurations, we have brought all the ordering information together for you in summary form on pages 5-4 of this chapter. INFO BOX Type and shape of Cup electrodes When choosing the right Cup electrode, in addition to the material, the shape is also a major factor. Based on the criteria already mentioned above, GVB-geliMED offers a wide range of stamped electrodes, electrodes with plastic covering and spider electrodes. cast stamped It is wrong to assume that a larger electrode diameter is beneficial because it can take more conducting gel or paste. They set slow EEG frequencies below 10 Hz against a resistance rising exponentially steeply with the decrease in frequency and therefore lead to a distortion of the EEG signal. Pure silver electrodes are therefore not suited to EEG conductance, but are the preferred choice for EP conductance, as slow frequencies (undesirable drift) are not recorded.
