2 William Anthony Baum Today's Baumanometer instruments still function on the immutable law of gravity and are the result of continued development over the years. Cases and housings are precision diecast or extruded metal. Mylar clad cartridge tubes are fully recessed in metal scales. These calibrated tubes have a wide bore to prevent separation of the mercury column and are held securely in protective metal housings by spring tension. A stainless steel nozzle clip in the mercury reservoir keeps mercury in place during handling and transport. These are just a few of the hundreds of improvements made since 1916 many of them hidden from view but all contributing to the production of instruments of unsurpassed accuracy and dependability. Reliable measurement of blood pressure depends, as it always has, on correct technique, correct cuff size and an instrument of known accuracy.
