Total Mixed Ration (TMR) involves the complete mixing of a balanced combination of feeds to provide all the essential nutrients to livestock to maximize production. This machine thoroughly combines all ingredients before feeding. A large mixing chain with drag slats moves through the tub to stir and mix ingredients into a uniform ration. A simple hinged door allows for fast emptying. Many of the features incorporated into the machine are the result of suggestions made by customers like you. Read the manual carefully to learn to operate the machine safely and how to set it to provide maximum efficiency. The manual will take you step-bystep through your working day. By following the operating instructions in conjunction with a good maintenance program, your Feed Mixer will provide many years of trouble-free service. 8. Clear the area of all bystanders, especially children, before starting. 9. Keep all electrical wires, connections and ground in good condition. 13
22 OPERATION 4.2 MACHINE COMPONENTS The Feed Mixer is a large tub with a revolving drag chain to roll the mixture within itself and distribute all ingredients evenly throughout the ration. Also, an auger located in the center of the tub mixes the feed from sides to center. Finally, when the door is opened, the beater kicks the mixture out to empty the tub. The unit is driven by an electric motor that can be connected into a controller for automatic operation. 26 OPERATION 4.6 OPERATION OPERATIONAL HINTS Although the Mixer is simple and easy to operate, potential problems will be minimized by following these hints: 1. Add the mineral or supplement before the coarse material such as silage or other roughage. 2. Add the grain and supplement individually before starting the Mixer to obtain an accurate weight of each ingredient. 3. Always add the ingredients in the center of the Mixer. 4. Start the Mixer just before adding the coarse material ingredients such as hay and corn silage. 5. Do not use an AG loader or skid-steer loader to add ingredients. These methods place too large a clump of material into the system and can plug the system at the top. It also requires mixing for a longer period of time to obtain a consistent mixture. NOTE: Call Valmetal inc. for available AG loader option which prevents damage to mixer. 6. If the Mixer is a part of a Total Mixed Ration system, be sure to recalibrate the mixture when an ingredient changes. Small changes in ingredient quality, consistency or moisture content can have a dramatic effect on the ration mixture. It may be necessary to reprogram the master control panel to reflect these changes. 7. If the Mixer is controlled manually, use the electronic scale as a guide to the amount of ingredient added to the ration. 8. An electronic load cell, that monitors the total weight of the unit, is located in the base of the machine and is loaded through a series of levers and rods from each corner. True weight can only be obtained when the base is level. Check occasionally that the base is level and each time the unit is moved. 10. Be sure to place wooden blocks under each corner of the Mixer (fig. 13) to provide sufficient clearance to drive a Feed Cart under the unloading chute and provide clearance under the unit for cleaning. 11. Never unplug machine during winter. It takes electronic instruments a few minutes to warm up to operating temperature and give accurate readings. This variation can be eliminated by leaving the scale ON during winter. During spring and summer, always unplug the machine. This will prevent damage caused by possible lightning storms. 12. The instrument also prevents a build-up of moisture on all components when it is left ON and warm. Moisture build-up can cause internal electrical shorts if allowed to get large enough. Leaving the unit ON eliminates condensation. 13. Keep the electrical leads in a protected location and be careful not to damage them. It only takes a small amount of moisture to damage the load cell. 14. Although all scale leads and connectors are water resistant, they cannot withstand the moisture from a water hose or pressure washer. Do not aim a stream of water from either source on the connectors. 15. It is important to verify the precision of the scale once a week. If the precision is off, you must calibrate the scale. To calibrate the scale, use a 150kg (330 lbs). Refer to the scale manual for the calibration procedures. 16. Fill the mixer without exceeding the beater level. Overloading the mixer may damage the beater and therefore affect the quality of the mix. It is recommended to carry out 2 mixes instead of overloading the mixer. NOTE: OVER FILLING WILL DAMAGE PADDLES AND BEATER. 9. Allow the unit to run for 3 to 4 minutes after the last ingredient is added to insure complete mixing. 18

31 AgriMetalinc. WICKHAM, QUE., CANADA MODEL SERIE H.P. Fabriqué au Canada Made in Canada OPERATION 4.7 INSTALLATION Follow this procedure when installing or moving the Mixer: 1. Clear the area of bystanders, especially small children. 2. Use only a hoist, crane, forklift or loader with sufficient lift capacity and stability to lift the unit safely. 3. Move the unit slowly minimizing the effect of bumps, ruts or rough terrain. 4. The Mixer is equipped with 4 hooks on the top of the frame as a convenience to attach a chain. Always connect to the 4 hooks when raising. 8. If moving a unit, disconnect all the electrical leads. Turn the power OFF at the master electrical panel before disconnecting the motor. 9. Connect the chain to the hooks and secure so they will not shift or move. 10. Maneuver the unit into its final position. Be sure the area has a solid base. A concrete or asphalt floor is recommended. 11. When the mixer is in its final position, remove the bearing protection plates located in the four corners of the machine. 12. Put wooden blocks or steel blocks under each corner. The blocks will provide the extra height needed on the smaller units to allow a Feed Cart to get under the unloading chute and allow space under the unit for easy cleaning. Fig Fig When moving with a fork lift, it will be necessary to use the two slides located underneath the mixer to support the front of the Mixer. Most fork lifts do not have long enough forks to reach across to the frame on the opposite side. 6. Use two men to maneuver the Mixer into its final position and help direct the person operating the lifting equipment. 7. The Mixer is always shipped from the factory with a steel spacer in the load cell position to protect the sensing unit from overload. If a working unit is going to be moved, always install the blank spacer before starting. The sensing unit then will not be damaged. Fig Place spacers between the blocks and the frame to level the frame in both directions. IMPORTANT The Mixer base frame must be level to insure load cell accuracy. Add spacers as required to level the base. 23
32 OPERATION 14. Install the load cell (fig & 4.13) by following this procedure: a. Support the two weighing levers that overlap on the left side. b. Remove the two mounting bolts attaching the spacer to the levers. c. Install the sensor (load cell) into the space. h. Use this junction box to connect the wires from the load cell to the leads from the indicator. When connecting, follow this procedure: i. Open the cover to the junction box (A) and take out the seal and insulators (B). ii. Remove both ends and thread the wires through the caps into the box. SCREW MUST BE FLUSH SCREW MUST BE FLUSH iii. Solder each of the same color wires together. IMPORTANT The system is very sensitive to changes in resistance. Soldering the connections eliminates resistance changes over time. Fig Load cell d.
