19 Under Cabinet Lighting Dimming Information From brilliant light to subtle ambiance with the turn of a switch. Sometimes you need all the light you can get sometimes mood lighting is more in order. With the right dimmer switch, you can add flexibility to under cabinet lighting so you re prepared for anything: full lighting for veggie chopping, ambiance for parties or subtle illumination for late-night snacks. Not All Dimmer Switches Are Created Equal Switch Type* Standard Triac Rotary Electric Low Voltage What to Expect Will reduce initial lumen output from 94% to 76% Will dim 100% to black Will create a smaller dim range, typically from 80% to 62% Good to Know When you use a dimmer at full power, the initial lumen output of any fixture will be slightly lower than with a standard wall switch. Because a wall dimmer is designed to control lighting intensity, it tends to absorb some of the power that s going to the fixtures. Here we depict wiring in general purpose areas to illuminate recommended tape light installations. The main floor is connected to the second level with vertical floor to floor wire commonly known as riser (can be substituted with plenum wire). Plenum-rated wire can then be used throughout drop ceilings where ventilation requires higher standards. CM CMP CL3P Communications general purpose cable is best suited for common areas the open areas in which we live and work. So, when looking for in-wall wire for cabinet-to-cabinet, hanging shelf or other non-plenum or non-riser (vertical between floors) installations, this option works well. 49 Technical Resources Installation Instructions What to know before you install Kichler LED Tape Light. PRE-INSTALLATION CHECKLIST 1. Prepare the location that the Kichler LED Tape Light will be installed. Make sure that the area has been thoroughly cleaned using nonpetroleum based products and is dry. If installing underneath a cabinet, it is recommended to install tape light at least 1.5" away from cabinet lip to prevent shadowing on countertop surface. 2. Determine location for power supply and length of supply lead wire that will be needed. 3. Determine how many sections/lengths of tape light and corresponding interconnect cables and splices that will be needed. Before Installing All installations should comply with national and local electrical codes. If you have any doubts concerning installation, contact a qualified, licensed electrician. Supply leads and interconnects are not listed for in-wall use. Read all instructions thoroughly before starting installation. 12V - Dry Location 24V - Dry Location 24V - Damp Location This fixture can only be used with Kichler LED Tape Lighting power supply and accessories. This fixture must be connected to a NRTL Listed Class 2, 12V DC power supply. 50 Installation Instructions For 12V and 24V dry location Kichler tape light. Installation - 12V and 24V Dry Location 1. Install power supply. Note: The power supply should be installed by a qualified electrician and be installed in accordance with national and local electric codes. Refer to the power supply installation instructions for further details. Connect - 12V and 24V Dry Location 1. Open connector gently using your finger nail. 2. Slide tape light into front of connector making sure that the tape is kept flat when placed in the connector s guides. Gently push the tape light forward until the tape light is fully seated in the connector and is under the prongs. 2. Run supply lead wire from power supply to beginning of tape light run. Do not connect lead wire to power supply yet. 3. Measure, and if necessary, cut the first section of tape light, leaving a minimum of 1" of space on each end for connections. Note: To cut the tape light, use a pair of sharp scissors, or snips, and cut on the dotted cut line ONLY. Note: Check that the connection is secure and that polarity (+/-) symbols are oriented in the same direction. 3. Close connector. 4. Completely remove 0.25" of the adhesive backing from either end of the tape that will be inserted into the connector. Remove 0.25" of the adhesive backing. CAUTION: If the adhesive backing is not removed, this may cause damage and, or poor connectivity. 4. Remove 3M backing from tape light and apply making sure to press between the LEDs and other components. Pressing on the LEDs and other components will result in damage to the tape. Note: For best results, peel off backing and apply tape light in small sections starting at the beginning of the run. 5. Connect tape light to supply lead wire. Note: Make sure +/- symbols on tape light line up with the +/- symbols on the connector of the supply lead wire. Note: Avoid using excessive force to prevent damage to LEDs and other components. 5. Install any additional sections of tape light and connectors in the same manner. 6. Connect power supply lead to power supply and turn on. Tip: Before powering on the system, double-check that all connections are secure and that all polarity (+/-) symbols are oriented in the same direction. 48

Cut tape light to size (optional). Note: The power supply should be installed by a qualified electrician and be installed in accordance with national and local electric codes. Refer to the power supply installation instructions for further detais. 2. Run supply lead wire from power supply to beginning of tape light run. Do not connect lead wire to power supply yet. 3. Connect tape light to supply lead wire. Note: Only the last piece of tape light in a run should be cut. Once cut, the cut section cannot be re-used. Note: To cut the tape light, use a pair of sharp scissors or snips and cut on the dotted cut line ONLY. Note: To maintain a water-tight seal on the tape light, fill an end cap (10181) with silicone (10183) and slide onto the exposed, cut end of the tape light. (End caps and silicone sold separately.) Note: The arrow on the supply lead wire connector should line up with the + side of the tape light. Note: To connect, push the 4 pins of the tape light into the connector. 4. Remove 3M backing from tape light and apply making sure to press between the LEDs and other components. Pressing on the LEDs and other components will result in damage to the tape. Connect - 24V Damp Location 1. Connect power supply lead to power supply and turn on. Tip: Before powering on the system, double-check that all connections are secure and that all polarity (+/-) symbols are oriented in the same direction. Note: To ensure proper connections, tape should not be bent over a 1.3" radius. 1.3 radius 90º bend Note: For best results, peel off backing and apply tape light in small sections starting at the beginning of the run. 5.
