2 Congratulations Congratulations on your purchase of the Lionel Bay Window or Extended Vision Caboose! These cars feature fully detailed, lighted interiors, operating smoke units, and separately applied details. The trucks feature rotating roller bearing caps. The Bay Window and Extended Vision Cabooses are perfect for any O gauge layout with O-31 minimum curves. 3 Installing the roof details Two small roof details have been packed separately to prevent damage in shipping. Install these pieces by pressing them into the locations shown in Figure 1. Roof details Operating the couplers To operate the couplers by hand, slide the uncoupling tab on the side of the coupler shaft back towards the car. Do not push down on the tab. To operate the couplers with a Remote-Control Track section (available separately, for O gauge; or for O-27; or for FasTrack layouts), simply position the uncoupling trigger over the magnetic disc on the Remote-Control Track section and press UNCOUPLE on the controller. 4 Removing the cupola (Extended Vision Caboose only) Remove the cupola to view the interior details. First, pull the wire braces away from the smokestack and slide them out of the cupola. Refer to Figure 5 on page 6. Then, carefully squeeze the cupola inward, applying pressure between the two small windows on the front and back sides as illustrated in Figure 3. Caution! Be careful that you do not scratch the paint when removing the cupola from the car. Figure 3. Cupola removal (Extended Vision Caboose only) Adding smoke fluid to your caboose s smoke unit Your caboose is equipped with a smoke generator that produces safe, clean, white smoke during operation. The smoke generator requires the periodic addition of Lionel smoke fluid in order to function. A small tube of smoke fluid is included with this car. Pierce the end of the tube with a pin, then add five to eight drops of smoke fluid directly into the smokestack. Swing the hood at the top of the stack out of the way before adding smoke fluid as illustrated in Figure 4. Additional smoke fluid ( ) is available at your authorized Lionel dealer. Note! The scale smokestack was not designed for use with the smoke generator. Caution! Always keep a small amount of smoke fluid in the smoke generator when the smoke unit is on. Operating your car without smoke fluid will damage the smoke generator. Figure 4. Adding smoke fluid 4

5 Switching your smoke generator ON or OFF As illustrated in Figure 5, the SMOKE unit switch is located on the bottom of your caboose. Sliding this switch to the ON position will activate the smoke generator. Be sure that you have added smoke fluid when the switch is in the ON position. 6 Installing the scale smokestack Your caboose is equipped with an operational smokestack that was installed at the factory. Use this smokestack when you operate the smoke generator. This stack was designed to allow the smoke fluid to flow properly into the smoke generator and to properly vent the smoke. To give your caboose a more prototypical appearance, you may choose to install the scale smokestack. Keep in mind that the smoke generator should be switched OFF before installing the smaller, scale-sized stack. Note! The scale smokestack was not designed for use with the smoke generator. 1. Slide the SMOKE switch to the OFF position. Refer to Figure 5 on page 5 for the location of the ON/OFF switch. 2. Remove the two wire braces attached to the smokestack. Refer to Figure 6. Bay Window Caboose Gently pull the wires away from the stack and pull them out of the roof. Extended Vision Caboose Gently pull the wires away from the stack and slide them out of the cupola. 3. Lift off the operating stack. 4. Press the scale smokestack into the hole that was molded into the roof. Be sure that the molded tooth at the base of the stack matches the notch in the roof opening. 5. Insert the long ends of the wire braces into the cupola or roof, and press the short ends into the holes in the stack. 7 Replacing the interior lamps Your caboose is lighted by two interior lamps. During the course of normal operations, these lamps may require replacement. We recommend that you only remove the roof to change the light bulbs. Note! Each end of the car features a red LED light. These LED s are not user serviceable. Visit your authorized Lionel Service Center for assistance. Caution! Removing the frame may cause damage to the interior. Remove the roof only. 1. Remove the two wire loops on the top of each ladder by lifting straight up. 2. Remove the four screws on the bottom of the caboose. Refer to Figure 5 on page 5 for the locations of these screws. 3. Remove the cupola. (Extended Vision Caboose only) Pull the wires out of the stack, then slide them out of the cupola. Apply pressure between the two small windows on the front and back sides of the cupola and lift it away. Caution! Be careful that you do not scratch the paint when removing the cupola from the caboose. 4. Carefully lift off the roof, separating the tabs on the roof sections from the slots in the body. The roof is secured to the car by four tabs, located on the sides of the caboose near the corners of the body. Refer to Figure 7. Note! There are no roof tabs near the cupola of the Extended Vision Caboose, only at the four corners of the body. Caution! Be careful that you do not scratch the paint when prying the tabs out of the slots. 5. Locate and unscrew the expired lamp(s). 8 Limited Warranty/Lionel Service This Lionel product, including all mechanical and electrical components, moving parts, motors and structural components, except for light bulbs, is warranted to the original consumer-purchaser, for one year against original defects in materials or workmanship when purchased through an authorized Lionel merchant. This warranty does NOT cover normal wear and tear, light bulbs, defects appearing in the course of commercial use, or damage resulting from abuse or misuse of the product by the purchaser. Transfer of this product by the original consumer-purchaser to another person voids this warranty. Modification of this product voids this warranty. Any warranted product which is defective in original materials or workmanship and is delivered by the original consumer-purchaser to Lionel L.L.C. or an authorized Lionel L.L.C. Service Center, together with proof of original purchase will, at the option of Lionel L.L.C., be repaired or replaced, without charge for parts or labor. In the event the defective product cannot be repaired, and a replacement is not available, a refund of the original purchase price will be granted. Any products on which warranty service is sought must be sent freight or postage prepaid, as transportation and shipping charges are not covered by the warranty. In no event shall Lionel L.L.C. be liable for incidental or consequential damages. Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above exclusion may not apply to you. This limited warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may have other rights which vary from state to state. Instructions for Obtaining Service If service for this Lionel L.L.C. product is required, bring the item, along with your dated sales receipt and completed warranty information to the nearest Authorized Lionel Service Center. Your nearest Lionel Service Center can be found by calling Lionel, or by accessing our Website at If you prefer to send your product back to Lionel L.L.C. for repair in Michigan, you must first call or FAX , or write to Customer Service, P.O. Box 748, New Baltimore, MI , stating what the item is, when it was purchased and what seems to be the problem. You will be sent a return authorization letter and label to ensure your merchandise will be properly handled upon receipt. Once you have received your return authorization and label, make sure that the item is packed to prevent damage during shipping and handling. We suggest that you use the product s original packaging. This shipment must be prepaid and we recommend that it be insured. Please make sure you have followed all of the above instructions carefully before returning any merchandise for service. You may choose to have your product repaired by one of our Authorized Lionel Service Centers after its warranty has expired. A reasonable service fee will be charged.
