(HAVING PART NUMBER SUFFIXES LESS THAN "-100") ************~************** This service specification supplements Service Specification SU-4551 to furnish the necessary information to adjust: and calibrate PN-lSOBC decoding relays. These relays have more flexible heel springs and a smaller parallel air gap than the PN-lSOB relay, _thereby enabling the relay to dropaway slightly slower after energy has been, removed. Decoding relays are equipped with 6FB silver to silver-impregnated carbon contacts. :I. ri. IrI. rv. With the snubbing re~dstor specified in Table 2 across the relay coil, the drop-away time in cycles (1/60 second) shall be as shown in Table 2 when the specified voltage is removed. SERVICE TESTS. If contact replacements are necessary, a molded block contact assembly -- containing a complete set of new contacts -- should be installed. The old style, "screw and wedge" contacts, which are still in good condition, may be retained as future replacements in relays still using such contacts. (See Contact- Detail) K, p. 6

19 SERVICE MANUAL Addendum VITAL RELAY PERIODIC MAINTENAN-CE All vital relays must be inspected and tested at least every four (4) years: except ac vane relays and de polar relays shall be tested at least once every two (2) years; and timing relays shall be tested at least once every twelve (12) months. The tests and inspections are to include: pick-up current, drop-away current, timing of slow operating and timing relays, visual inspection of contacts for damage or misalignment, corrosion, or other contaminati9n of parts, loose parts inside of cover, broken seal, and cracked or broken cover. All vital relays installed in locomotive or car-carried equipment are to be removed from service and adjusted, repai~ed and tested at least once every six (6) years. Relays not passing the above stated tests and inspections must be replaced and not r.eturned to service until the operating characteristics and conditions are in accordance with US&S specifications. see the reverse side of this page for specific relay maintenance intervals.
