D May 2016 Emerging Issues Hello, I m Mike Sculthorpe, welcome to the May 2016 Emerging Issues Program We are now recording Emerging Issues in the brand new Product Studio at GM World Headquarters, the Renaissance Center in Downtown Detroit. During the program today we will cover the latest service topics from Brand Quality and Engineering as well as answer questions from techs in the field.. Send your questions or comments to EI@raytheon.com We do our best to answer all of our . And of course we are always interested in hearing about topics you d like to see covered in a future program. To get credit for watching this program you must pass the test. At the end of the program I ll give you instructions on how to access the test. The SC symbol in the lower right corner of the screen identifies topics that should interest Service Consultants. Please be sure to let your Service Consultants know when you find content for them in the program. First up Top Stories. TOP STORIES In the mail bag this month we have a question from Jeff DeRoche at Jim Ellis Buick GMC mall of Georgia. Here is Jeff s question: I have noticed that on the 2015/2016 Sierra, the AC Delco wiper blades do not work properly on the passenger side. The wiper blades only sits on the inner half of the blade, and the outer part of the new blade does not touch the windshield. Is there an issue for this? Thanks! Here are a couple of pictures that Jeff included that show the blade is well away from the windshield and the ACDelco packaging. I checked in with Todd Merkle at AC Delco and here is what he found out. Due to a change on the Silverado/Sierra wiper arm for 2015/16, the blade shown in your picture, or AC Delco , had an interference issue that caused the blade to not sit correctly on the glass or AC Delco , was the new released blade that does not have an interference issue and will work OK with the 2015/16 Sierra. The parts catalog has been updated to reflect the proper part.

Now we have some updates to PIC6187, PIC6186 and Bulletin 16 NA 042. PIC6187 was updated at the beginning of April. It covers 2014 through 2016 cars and trucks with RPO s IO5, IO6 or RAO and a customer concern that intermittently, the favorites saved from a USB drive or SD card are grayed out and not selectable. Be aware that those favorites are only available when that device is connected to the vehicle. Verify that the device is plugged into the USB or SD port and recheck. If the concern is still present, do NOT replace any parts. Contact TAC to report the concern and obtain a case number. PIC6186 was updated in April as well. It covers any 2016 vehicles with IO5 or IO6 radios. If the radio is turned off during a previous key cycle, it may turn back on when the vehicle is restarted without any input. Again, if you are working on a vehicle with this concern, call TAC to obtain a case number. Bulletin 16 NA 042 was just updated and provides information on adding Android Auto to certain 2016 vehicles with IO5 or IO6. Vehicles covered by the bulletin and in Dealer inventory can now be upgraded prior to delivery to the customer. Notice that it does state that this excludes Envision, SRX, CT6 and Cruze. These vehicles already have Android Auto installed. It also provides the build date range. Any involved vehicles built after this date also have Android Auto installed at the plant. We also have a reminder concerning blown fuses. If you are working on a vehicle with a blown fuse and determine the cause is the customer s add-on equipment, such as a trailer or a phone charger, and a decision is made to cover the repair, it should be submitted as customer enthusiasm, not warranty. If it is submitted as warranty engineering reviews it to try and determine the cause. Any incorrectly submitted claims may be rejected. Obviously if the cause cannot be determined, it may still be submitted as warranty but the claim should call out that no cause was found. TechLine recently released a new software program that can help you gather important information concerning the PC you are using prior to calling TCSC for help. This is information that they will be asking you for, so this can help speed up the process. The TechLine system Analyzer can be installed on your computer and will gather information including OS version, IE version, amount of free hard drive space, the type and speed of the RAM processor, video resolution and any anti-virus and anti-spyware software installed. This information can help TCSC determine proper assistance for PC or software concerns. To install this software, log on to TIS2Web and click on the Utility tab and then click on the Install button. Follow the installation prompts to complete the install. A new icon will be placed on your desktop and provides a shortcut to the program. If you run this program prior to calling TCSC, the information needed will be displayed on screen for you to provide to the advisor. Next, there has been a change to the Wheel speed data parameters available on GDS for a number of vehicles that was released with the last GDS update on May 2nd. These new parameters should be very helpful in diagnosing intermittent Tire Pressure Monitor or TPM concerns.

Here is a list of the vehicles broken down by years that now have these parameters and later: XTS, ATS, Cruze, Orlando, Malibu, Sonic, Encore, LaCrosse, Regal, SRX Volt Equinox, Terrain, Verano 2014 and later: Trak, Impala, Corvette, Caprice/SS/PPV, Silverado/ Sierra, Camaro, CTS, ELR 2015 and later: Tahoe/Yukon, Escalade, Spark 2016 and later: Envision, Cascada, CT and later: XT5 Acadia, Bolt The data is located under module diagnostics, BCM, Data Display and then TPM Sensor Data. Make sure you choose Sensor Data, not System Data. The parameters for each wheel include Sensor Signal Quality as a percentage, Sensor Signal Quality in seconds and Sensor Rolling Count. This is a sample from a vehicle that was intermittently setting a DTC for the left rear TPM. It shows sensor signal quality parameter over time. The green pattern is the left rear wheel. You can see a major change in that pattern. During that time the BCM was not receiving a signal from the TPM. I know this information is very vague, but it is very late breaking and I will have much more on this next month. We are still working on how to use this info to help in diagnosis but if you are working on a vehicle with an intermittent TPM concern, you may want to take the vehicle out for a road test with GDS 2 hooked up and then take a look at these parameters and graph them out. Our last Top Story is this month s new World Class Technicians. Marty Simmons at Nash Chevrolet in Lawrenceville, Georgia Larry Yates at Suntrup Buick GMC in Saint Peters, Missouri Ruben Nollen at Karl Chevrolet in Ankeny, Iowa And Robert Wyttenbach at Bob Stall Chevrolet in La Mesa, California Congratulations to all of you on a hard earned honor! Up next, our Featured Topic. FEATURE TOPIC: In this month s featured topic we are going to take a look at convertible top operation in the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro and Buick Cascada.

The 2016 Camaro Convertible has been released and may be showing up at your dealer by now. The Buick Cascada is only available as a convertible and has been out for about a month. Both convertible tops are manufactured by Magna. They have similar operation and share a number of components. Just like the Corvette, these tops can be operated while the vehicle is moving as long as the vehicle speed is less than 31 mph. To get you familiar with this vehicle, we put a video together on each to show basic top operation. They won t get into diagnostics but should give you a good feel for what should happen, which will let you know when the top is not working correctly. Let s take a look at the Camaro first: VIDEO: The 2016 Camaro convertible top is all new and is produced by Magna. Differences from the 2015 Camaro convertible include the addition of a stowage compartment lid that is automatically cycled with the top and the absence of a stowage bag to hold the top when lowered. The top can be cycled up or down in about 18 seconds. The top system uses a pump and motor assembly with solenoids that is packaged behind the rear seat back. The pump produces up to 180 bar or 2,600 PSI. Read and follow all warnings to avoid releasing fluid under very high pressure. The 6 hydraulic cylinders used to raise and lower the top operate in pairs. 2 cylinders raise and lower the tension bow. Two more raise and lower the stowage compartment lid and the last pair raises and lowers the top. Top operation is controlled by the folding top control module which is located behind the rear seat back with the pump and motor. There are 13 sensors that supply information to the control module. 2 header latch sensors and 2 header unlatch sensors. These are located at the top of the windshield on the left and right sides and supply information to the controller concerning header latch position. A luggage barrier sensors is located on the right upper side of the trunk. If the luggage barrier is not in position, this sensor will prevent top operation. The folding top up position sensor is located on the left side roof frame and the down position sensor is located on the left side roof pivot bracket in the quarter panel. There are 3 sensors used to determine location of the tension bow. One bow up position sensor and a left and right bow down sensor. All three are located on the main pivot bracket. One stowage compartment lid open position sensor and 2 stowage compartment lid closed position sensors are located on the stowage compartment lid hinge. A switch for top control is located in the upper console. To operate the top, the ignition must be in the ON or Accessory position. Pressing the rear of the switch will lower the top. Pressing the front of the switch will raise the top.

With the top in the folded position, the first step in the closing procedure is for the Stowage Compartment Lid to unlatch and open. The latch is released electrically and the Lid is moved using 2 hydraulic cylinders. In GDS2 the left and right folding top stowage compartment lid closed positions sensors change from On to Off Once the lid is fully opened the Lid Open Position sensor changes states.. Two hydraulic cylinders raise the top out of the stowage area and up to the header. As the top begins to raise the folding top Down position sensor changes from On to off. Notice that the tension bow is in the raised position. Once the Up position sensor indicates to the control module that the top is raised, the header latch motor rotates to push the latch rods outward, securing the top to the header. Both of the Header Latched sensors change from Off to On. Both Unlatched sensors change from On to Off. The left header unlatched sensor changes from OFF to ON and the right unlatched sensor changes from On to OFF With the top latched at the header, the Stowage compartment lid is closed and latched. As the lid closes the Lid Open Position Sensor changes from On to Off and the two Closed Position Sensors change from Off to On when the lid latches. With the top latched at the header, the Stowage compartment lid is closed and latched. As the lid reaches approximately half way closed the Lid Open Position Sensor changes from On to Off. The two Closed Position Sensors change from Off to On once the lid latches. Finally, the tension bow is lowered to complete top closing. As the bow begins to Lower the Bow Up Sensor changes from On to Off. Once the bow is fully lowered the Left and Right Bow Down Position sensors change from Off to On. When opening the top, the first step is for the 2 hydraulic cylinders to fully raise the tension bow. In GDS2 the Bow Down Position Sensors change from On to Off. Once the bow is fully raised the Bow Up Position Senor will change from Off to On. Then the Stowage compartment lid is unlatched electrically and opened hydraulically. As the lid begins to open the Lid Closed Position Sensors change from On to Off. Once the lid is fully opened the Lid Open Position Sensor changes from Off to On. Next, the header latch motor unlatches the top from the header. Both header latched sensors and the left header unlatched sensor change from ON to OFF and the right unlatched sensor changes from OFF to ON. The third pair of hydraulic cylinders lowers the top into the stored position.

The Top Up Position Sensor changes from On to Off. Once fully folded the Top Down Position Sensor changes from Off to On. Once the Top Down sensor determines the top is fully stowed, the 2 Stowage compartment lid cylinders lower the lid and it is latched to complete top movement. The Lid Open Position Sensor goes from On to Off when the lid reaches approximately half way closed. Once the Lid is fully closed and latched, the Lid Closed Position Sensors change from Off to On. Before we move on, here are a couple of points concerning water management. The water management system on the Camaro convertible was required because the top sealed on the inside of the body of the car. On the 2016 Camaro the top seals on the outside of the car using a tension bow. Therefore a water management system like what was developed on the 5th gen car, is not needed. Advise your customers that the top and stowage compartment lid must be dry before the top is lowered. If there is standing water on the top or lid, it will dump into the stowage compartment as the top is opened, as you can see in this picture. There are drain holes in the gutter area in case water gets between the cover and body side in the closed position, so no water should get into the stowage compartment if the top is fully closed. Last month we introduced you to the Buick Cascada. This month we have another video to show how this top operates. Again, we won t get into diagnostics, but will show proper operation. Let s take a look! VIDEO: The 2016 Cascada convertible top is also produced by Magna. Operation is similar to the Camaro and the tops share a number of parts. The top system uses a pump and motor assembly with solenoids that is packaged in the left rear quarter panel. The pump produces up to 180 bar or 2,600 PSI. Read and follow all warnings to avoid releasing fluid under very high pressure. The 6 hydraulic cylinders used to raise and lower the top operate in pairs. 2 cylinders raise and lower the tension bow, which may also be called the 5 bow. 2 more raise and lower the stowage compartment lid which may also be called the tonneau cover, and the last pair raises and lowers the top. Top operation is controlled by the folding top control module which is located in the left quarter panel near the pump and motor. The header latch motor, motor latched position sensor, motor unlatched position sensor along with left and right header latch position sensors are located in the convertible top header. Luggage barrier sensors are located on the right and left sides of the trunk. If the luggage barrier is not in position, this sensor will prevent top operation.

A folding top up position sensor is located on the left side roof frame and the down position sensor is located on the left side roof pivot bracket in the quarter panel. There are 3 sensors used to determine location of the tension bow. One bow up position sensor and a left and right bow down sensor. The stowage compartment lid uses left and right closed position sensors, a lid open position sensor along with lid latch open and closed position sensors. A movable flap is located on the leading edge on the left and right side of the lid. One motor operates both and 2 sensors report flap position to the folding top module. A switch for top control is located in the console. To operate the top, the ignition must be in the ON or Accessory position. Pulling up on the switch will lower the top. Pressing down on the switch will raise the top. With the top in the folded position, the first step in the closing procedure is for the stowage compartment lid to unlatch and open. The latch is released electrically and the lid is moved using 2 hydraulic cylinders. As the lid begins to open the lid latch sensors and the lid closed sensor will change states. When the lid is approximately half way open, the flaps will fold and the flap sensors will change states. Once the lid is fully opened, the lid open and lid fully closed position sensors change states. Next 2 hydraulic cylinders raise the top out of the stowage area and up to the header. As the top begins to close the top down position sensor changes to inactive. Notice that the tension bow is in the raised position. As the top reaches the header, the top up position sensor changes to active. The stowage compartment lid closes next. The flaps move to the closed position and the flap sensors change states. When the lid is fully closed the lid latch sensors change states. At the same time the header latch motor latches the header and the 4 latch sensors change states. Finally, the tension bow is lowered to complete top closing. The bow up sensor and the 2 bow down sensors will change states. The lid latch open and lid latch closed sensors also change states. When opening the top, the first step is to raise the Tension bow. As it moves upward, all three bow sensors change states. Also, the stowage compartment lid unlatches and both latch position sensors change states. The lid is raised using 2 hydraulic cylinders. As it moves, all 5 lid sensors change states. At the same time the header latch motor releases both latches and all 4 sensors change states. The third pair of hydraulic cylinders lowers the top into the stowed position. The top up and top down sensors will switch states during the move. Once the Top Down sensor determines the top is fully stowed, the 2 stowage compartment lid cylinders lower the lid. The lid open sensor and lid fully closed sensor will change states. As the lid reaches approximately half closed, the flaps will move to the closed position and the flap sensors change states.

Here are some tips on convertible top care that apply to both vehicles. Care of either top includes making sure the top is clean and dry prior to lowering it. A damp top may stain or mildew. To clean the top, place the vehicle in the shade and wet all of the fabric. Then use a mild soap, lukewarm water and a soft sponge to clean the entire top. Allow the soap to remain on the fabric for a few minutes before rinsing. Allow the top to completely dry in direct sunlight. That s all we ve got this month for Featured Topics. Up next is What s Hot for Cars. WHAT S HOT FOR CARS: To start Cars this month, we have bulletin 16-NA-084 which covers a cluster creak on any Corvette. This may be caused by an interaction between the cluster lens and the IP. To repair this concern, remove the cluster from the IP and then gently press the tabs outboard in a clockwise sequence to release the lens from the cluster housing. Apply a light film of GM Super Lube wide and narrow standoffs and the guide pin slot as shown in these pictures. Next, clean the inside of the lens with distilled water and a clean microfiber cloth. Finally, apply a light film of super lube on the cluster lens wide standoffs and reassemble the cluster. The bulletin provides a unique labor op for this repair. Recall should be released by the time this seminar is available. It covers 2014 through 2016 Caprice PPV for a possible loss of steering assist. This can be caused by fretting corrosion on the connector between the EPS module and the torque sensor. The repair requires replacement of the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear. As shown in the gear replacement document, the four bolts retaining the gear to the cradle should be removed and DISCARDED! They are torque to yield bolts and should never be reused. The bulletin will list the part numbers for the gear, four bolts and a boot clamp. Next is a heads up concerning the forward camera on the 2016 Cascada. If the camera has to be removed from the bracket, be careful! I heard it is easy to crack the windshield. Any device used to pry the retaining tabs away from the camera must be kept away from the glass. Only pry the tab enough to release the camera. I would suggest a trim stick might be the best choice. Metal tools contacting the glass would be a bad idea.

A software update has been released to correct a DTC B101E-43 set in the side object sensing alert module on a 2016 Impala VIN 1. The customer may also state that the side blind zone alert warning is sounding while driving. Again, do not replace any parts for this concern just update the software. Refer to Bulletin 16-NA-122 for details. PIC6188 covers a radio volume or tune knob that is broken or won t stay attached on any 2014 through 2017 Impala VIN 1 with RPO I05 or I06. Although the part is not currently in the parts catalog, you can obtain a replacement by calling TAC. Please do NOT replace the radio for this concern! Next we have a quick heads up concerning Chevrolet Volts with an engine odor or burning smell. Bulletin 16-NA-127 covers 2016 and 2017 Volts with an engine odor or a burning smell inside the vehicle when the engine is running for extended periods. The smell may be caused by the insulation material in the engine heat shield. It may also be caused by the catalytic converter during the initial bake-in when driving in extended range, in which case it should diminish over time. General Motors is currently investigating the concern and until a permanent solution is created, if you have a customer with concerns about the odor you should replace the cabin filter with a carbon cabin filter. The bulletin lists the correct part Several cases of intermittent dead batteries on the Cascada have been reported. During diagnostics, no parasitic load was found. Typically this has occurred when the vehicle is driven short distances and then allowed to sit for long periods of time. In the Cascada, if the battery drops below 65% SOC the tail lamps may send a diagnostic request to the BCM which will cause all modules on the bus to wake up and remain awake until the battery drains. To repair this concern, replace both tail lamps with updated parts. Use the GR8 to Charge and Test the battery after replacing the tail lamps. The last story in cars is 16-NA-104 which covers a red brake indicator illuminated on the 2016 Cruze. This may be caused by a rubber bumper on the park brake assembly that should have been removed at the plant. This should be checked during the PDI to prevent future concerns. If the bumper is present remove the knee bolster and then press upward on the pedal to loosen and remove the bumper. Next, using a 10 mm deep well socket with a 4 inch extension, rotate the adjustment nut clockwise 2 revolutions. Finally, set and release the park brake several times to ensure that the red brake indicator light functions properly. The bulletin lists a unique labor op for the bumper removal. That s all we have for cars, What s Hot for Trucks is next.

WHAT S HOT FOR TRUCKS: To start Trucks this month, we have a short introduction to the 2016 Buick Envision. This 4 door, 5 passenger crossover vehicle is positioned between the Encore and the Enclave. It is powered by the direct injected turbocharged 2.0 liter engine, RPO LTG, which provides 252 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 260 lb. ft. of torque at 2000 rpm. The 2.0 liter engine is backed up by a 6T50, RPO M2D which has Gen 3 upgrades to enhance efficiency including a binary vane-type pump which lowers power consumption when demand is low and when engine speeds are high. This powertrain also features GM s Stop Start system to help conserve fuel when the vehicle is at a stop. The 2016 Envision is also equipped with all-wheel drive and uses the twin clutch Intelligent AWD to split torque between the rear wheels, providing additional control. This vehicle is very well equipped including: Sliding 60/40 split rear seat 8-way power-adjustable front seats with four-way-adjustable lumbar Heated front seats, heated rear outboard seats and heated steering wheel 19-inch aluminum wheels Bose premium sound system Safety Alert Seat and Lane Keep Assist tri-zone climate control with rear-seat controls Active Noise Cancellation Passive entry and push-button start with standard remote start Programmable power liftgate with hands-free operation Optional features include: Automatic Park Assist Adaptive Cruise Control Surround Vision 360-degree camera system Adjustable front seat thigh support Cooled front seats Front Automatic Braking

Head-Up Display And a panoramic moonroof. It also come standard with 10 air bags. Driver and front outboard passenger airbags Driver and front outboard passenger knee airbags Driver and front outboard passenger seat-mounted side impact airbags Side impact airbags for second row outboard passengers Left and Right roof-rail airbags Other standard safety features include a Tevis MK100 ABS system that provides: Hydraulic brake assist. Intelligent Brake assist which provides limited braking to help prevent low speed collisions. Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control and Hill Hold Start Assist. For further details on this vehicle, take a look at the new model features bulletin which should be out by the time this show is available. Also, be sure to review the PDI form. Because this vehicle is shipped in from overseas, one item that is a high priority is washer fluid level. It may be fairly low and should be checked and filled before delivery to the customer. Up next, we wanted to let you know that GM has requested the return of certain ignition switches that may be on your parts departments shelf. Here is a look at the Global Connect message that was sent out in February: These parts should not be installed on a customer s vehicle. You can see that the GM part number is and the AC Delco part number is D1426D. Any time you are installing one of these, check the date code. Any package with a date code of or prior should not be used. The first 2 digits represent the year, The last 3 digits represent the Julian day of production. Any switch with a package date code beyond this date is ok to install. The switch fits any of the vehicles listed here: The possible concern is a no crank or intermittent no crank immediately after installation. So, save yourself some time and aggravation check that date code! Several claims have been submitted in the last month for this concern and could have easily been avoided if the Global connect message had been followed.

Next, GM has received several claims on DuraMax engines for head gasket replacement shortly after another cooling system repair was made. After investigation, it was determined that some of the cooling systems were not properly filled and the engine had overheated because of it. So, it is very important to properly fill the cooling system. The best method is to use the Vac N Fill, GE which we have shown several times in the past including the February 2012 Back to Basics. The tool is used to pull a vacuum on the cooling system and then add coolant to the evacuated system. This method is faster and more reliable at removing air from the system than simply pouring coolant into the cooling system with the engine running. After filling the system, disconnect the vac n fill from the surge tank. Start the engine and run at 2,000 to 2,500 RPM until it reaches normal operating temperature of 212 degrees F. At that point the upper radiator hose should be hot. The cooling system on this vehicle uses a split tank as you can see in this picture. The right side is the surge tank and will be pressurized when the cooling system is warm. The MIN indicator should be ignored. Some vehicles may also have a MAX indicator, again ignore this mark. The left side is an overflow tank. When the surge tank is full and pressure in the cooling system rises above a set point, the pressure cap will allow coolant to pass through to the overflow tank. Under the pressure cap is a small passage to the overflow tank. Allow the engine to idle with the pressure cap removed and add more coolant to the surge tank until starts filling the overflow tank. Stop when the overflow is approximately half full. Install the surge tank pressure cap and run the engine at 2500 RPM for an additional 3 minutes ignition off. Make sure that the surge tank is full and the overflow tank is about half full before releasing the vehicle to the customer. G vans use a similar procedure. Be sure to review directions in SI. The main thing to consider when filling the cooling system on a G van that has been up fitted with an axillary heater is to look for an instruction label on the vehicle for filling the coolant system. This should be supplied by the vehicle up fitter. If no label is found, the dealer should contact the up fitter for a procedure for filling the system. For example, this becomes very important on an ambulance. The auxiliary heater may be at the top of the box, which places it several feet above the top of the engine. It may be very difficult to completely fill that part of the system with coolant so the upfitter s instructions will be critical. Our last Truck story this month is a review of recall which covers the 2015 City Express to prevent a possible crank no start concern. TAC has been fielding a number of calls after this repair with a number of concerns that relate back to the wire repair. The repair requires cutting one red wire and one purple wire. There are 4 red and 2 purple wires in this harness so it is critical that the correct wires are used in the repair. Be sure the harness is opened enough to see all the wires and then pick the largest red and purple wires. If the harness is not opened wide, the correct wires can remain hidden. If the incorrect wires are cut and soldered, a number of different concerns can be caused.

It is important to strip and twist the upper red and purple wires together. The other end of the purple wire will be attached to the other end of the splice seal. Remember to apply shrink wrap over the splice seal and also over the unused end of the red wire. Heating the shrink wrap will seal the connection. Retape the harness and reinstall the conduit. Also cover the conduit with electrical tape to provide a lasting repair. That s it for Trucks. Powertrain is next. POWERTRAIN: Our first story in Powertrain is an update to PI0486 which should be updated by the time this show airs. It covers an intermittent low clutch pedal or a pedal that does not fully return after being depressed on any 2010 through 2015 Camaro equipped with a manual transmission. The PI directs you to replace the clutch pedal assembly. The update will add replacing the master cylinder cap because it may not be venting correctly. Brand Quality also wanted me to let you know that proper fluid fill is very important. Overfilling the reservoir can also cause venting concerns which may lead to repeat pedal concerns. Next we have a heads up on any 2015 or 2016 ATS with a Tremec 6 speed manual transmission RPO MG9. It uses a hollow countershaft and if the fluid level is checked after the vehicle sits, it may show low because fluid has seeped back into the countershaft. Now this is a slow process so you have enough time to lift the vehicle and pull the plug. Basically, don t let it set for a half hour after shutting down prior to checking the level. If you add fluid at that point it will be overfilled! Over filling can cause shifting concerns including gear clash. When the vehicle is driven, centrifugal force pushes fluid back out of the countershaft and then a proper fill level can be determined. PI1409 provides help for 2014 and 2015 Malibu and 2015 Impala VIN1 with the 2.5 liter engine and Stop/ Start with an illuminated MIL and DTCs P2096 or P0621 set. If the DTC diagnostics don t determine a root cause, update the ECM software using the latest calibration available on TIS2Web. Some customers are bringing their K2, 2wd trucks in for a transmission oil leak from the rear of the transmission. I some cases technicians have noticed oil coming from the plug in the slip yoke. The 2wd truck uses a vented slip yoke, it has a small hole in the plug that allows air to vent as it plunges in and out of the transmission tail shaft housing, preventing a bind or stop clunk as the pinion angle changes. This is sealed by a prop shaft oil seal sleeve on the output shaft of the transmission. If oil is coming out of the vent hole in the slip yoke of a 2wd truck, it is because the prop shaft oil seal sleeve has failed and needs to be replaced. Some technicians are replacing the vented slip yoke with a non-vented yoke like those used on 4wd vehicles. This is not the proper repair as it does not repair the leaking seal and can cause a bind in the slip yoke as it fills with transmission fluid.

Please make sure you make the proper repair and when necessary, use the proper slip yoke for the vehicle you are working on. Our last story in powertrain is bulletin 16-NA-117 which covers magnetic drain plugs on any 2009 through 2017 GM vehicle. Magnetic drain plugs in drive axles, transmissions and transfer cases are designed to attract metallic particles generated during normal operation and prevent them from passing through the gears or bearing. When inspecting metallic particles on a plug magnet, it s important to determine the size and source. Remember, inspection of the drain plug does not constitute a diagnosis, it should be used to determine if further investigation is required. Look for large metal deposits. Small metal flakes and fine metal dust on the plug magnet as you see here, are considered normal. Larger pieces on the magnet would indicate fragments from bearings and gear teeth. This is not normal and requires further inspection for damage. Refer to the bulletin for more details. That s it for Powertrain. Back to Basics is next. BACK TO BASICS: In Back to Basics this month, we are covering another Fluke 87 topic. The Fluke 87 Series 3 Multimeter display may have segments that do not illuminate or are not fully lit. This is sometimes called ghosting. The best method to fix the meter is to send it into Fluke for repair, but if you need the meter right away, this can be corrected in many cases with a simple cleaning procedure that requires just a few tools and about 15 minutes of your time. The concern is typically caused by a poor connection between the circuit board and the LCD display. We put a video together to show the steps, let s take a look: Some Fluke 87 series 3 multimeters may have segments of the display that either do not illuminate or are ghosted, making it hard to read. This cleaning procedure requires isopropanol alcohol, a sturdy cotton tipped swab, a pencil eraser and some paper toweling. To begin by remove the leads, rotate the main switch to off and remove the cover. Place the meter face down on a protected surface and remove the 3 screws that hold the case halves together. These are the same screws that are removed to change the battery. Using 2 hands, gently pry the case halves apart and disconnect the battery.i have used this procedure many times over the years and had very good results. It sure beats replacing an otherwise good meter. Remove the screw in the cover over the circuit board. Slightly lift the bottom of the cover and then push upward to disengage the 2 tabs at the top. Set the cover aside.

Lift the circuit board out of the front case half and turn it over to show the display side. Using your fingers, gently pry the tabs at the top of the display cover outward and remove the cover. Be sure that the unit is held flat so that the display glass does not fall out. Place a small piece of tape at the top of the display for reference when reassembling. Carefully remove the LCD display. Next, remove the 2 flexible elastomer strips. The elastomer strips may stick to the LCD display glass, or remain in the housing. These strips are the contacts between the LCD display and the circuit board. Set the display and strips on a protected surface. Very gently flex the retaining tabs on the display housing outward and remove the housing. Only move the tab far enough to release it from the board. Any further movement will cause the tab to break. Using a pencil eraser clean the contact points on the circuit board. There are 2 rows near the top of the board. This is where the elastomer strips make contact. You can also clean the two rows of contacts for the push button switches Next, pour a small amount of alcohol in to a bottle cap and moisten a cotton swab. Rub the swab across the contacts. This will remove any pencil eraser debris and also further lean the contacts. Don t forget to swab the switch contacts as well. Next, clean both sides of each elastomer strip with the swab. Clean the contact area of the LCD display using the pencil eraser and an alcohol soaked cotton swab. Reinstall the display housing onto the circuit board and then install the elastomer strips into their slots. Reinstall the display into the housing using the tape to determine which side should face the top. Remove the tape and then secure the display with the cover. Make sure all of the tabs on the cover are engaged. The rounded edge of the display cover should be at the top. Turn the circuit board over and reinstall the rear cover by engaging the lock tabs at the top and then reinstall the screw. Install the circuit board back into the rear case half and then reinstall the battery. Insert the button assembly back into the meter and then install the front cover. Turn the meter over and install the 3 screws. Turn the meter back over, install it into the case and rotate the main switch to any position to check display operation. That s it for Back to Basics. Fix It Right The First Time is next. FIX IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME: Fix it Right the First Time is where we review COMMONLY MIS-DIAGNOSED symptoms. One for cars and one for Trucks

For cars, we have bulletin 16-NA-103 which provides a repair for 2016 Malibu with a customer concern that the ignition and start switch is sticking. DTC B097B may also be set. This can be caused by excess material in the switch cavity. What you should do is remove the trim pad and switch, then use a utility knife to trim away the excess material. Once trimmed, the opening for the switch will look round rather than an oval shape prior to repair. Obtain a new ignition and start switch and insert it into the panel, then reinstall the panel to the dash. What you should not do is just replace the switch. For trucks we have bulletin 16-NA-128. If you are working on a 2015 or 2016 Encore or Trax with a security light illuminated, and DTC B2955 is set, what you should do is reprogram the BCM using the latest calibration available on TIS2Web. What you should not do is replace any parts for this concern. OK, that s it for Fix it Right the First Time. I d like to thank all of you for watching today. And, as always, if you have any questions on what was covered today please send us an at EI@raytheon.com, and we ll be sure to answer them as quickly as possible.
