2 Congratulations on your purchase of an AST Solar Absorber unit! In order that your swimming pleasure will not be impaired, we suggest that you read this manual carefully before beginning with the assembly. 2 Solar Units Connected Collection Tube General Information: This manual describes the self-assembly absorber for the heating of swimming pools with cost-free sun energy. Swimming pool water flows through the AST Solar Absorber, which in turn heats the water. The AST Solar Absorber is made of a special plastic material and is completely weatherproof, waterproof and frostproof. The absorber brings each pool season a heating profit of kwh per square meter of installed absorber area. At this ratio -70% absorber area and pool surface - pool temperatures between 23 and 25 C are reached and liters of heating oil per square meter saved. 2/14

3 Principle Configuration: In order to achieve water temperatures between 23 and 25 C, we recommend positioning the absorber area in a scale of about 70% of pool area - (with a slant of around 10 ) toward the south. At an east or west positioning of the absorber area and in wind prone areas, we recommend an absorber area of 80-90% of the pool area. The segments of the assembly-ready Solar Absorber Unit can be installed virtually anywhere (garage roof, house roof, barn, field ) level, slanted, vertically or horizontally. Incredibly Simple Assembly: In order to assemble of the AST Solar Absorber Unit, please follow these assembly instructions. Assembly of the absorber strips on the provided assembly area takes place by simple bonding using a special bond glue and/or strap connecters. Intake and return flow from the collector must be as later described diagonally positioned. For intake and return flow tubing, plastic tubing can be used. 3/14

6 Chlorination of the Pool Water * The chlorination of the pool water must comply with the Austria standard M With indoor pools, the concentration of free chlorine and chloride may not exceed 1.2mg/l and with outdoor pools 2 mg/l. * The chlorination of the pool water must be continually maintained. Water shocking is a short-time over chlorination (>1.2 mg/l free chlorine) which increases a chemical onslaught on the total tubing and solar system. Possible guarantee claims can only be deemed valid when proof of continued chlorination is presented. * Disinfections agents, which are based on ozone and peroxide, may only be mixed at maximum 50 mg/l (=0.05 volume %). * The direct mixing of disinfections agents in the clean water tubing (after the filter) must be made in the flow direction AFTER the solar outflow (see schematic on page 4). * Stagnant water in the whole system can after a longer period of time lead to bacteria formation, sediments and also the need for chlorination. Avoid this even when the solar operation is not needed - by flushing out the entire tubing and solar system. Just as the filling of the pool before operation start-up after the winter pause is required, so also must the system be flushed to prevent the pollution of the water.. 6/14

7 Guarantee: AST, supplier of AST-Absorber tracks type EPDM 120/10, guarantees at the time of delivery the following: * Delivery of flawless material in proven quality. * Six year guarantee on the functional capability of the absorber in respect to UV and weather endurance as well as frost endurance of the absorber tracks. * In case of malfunction of the solar absorbers, which we have delivered within the guarantee period, AST will deliver a cost free replacement of the defective solar absorber or solar absorber tops. Excluded from the guarantee: * Assembly costs, collection tubing, connections, intake and return tubing * Use of absorber tracks in an unsuitable area and/or improper installation contrary to our technical data and operational manual * Over chlorination or improper Chlorination (see paragraph Chlorination ) * Impairment due to extreme air pollution, damage cause by a third party (outside influence, gnawers, etc.) and acts of God. 7/14

8 Assembly Directions: Basic assembly pointers In order to reach a consistent flow through the absorber as well as to attain the best possible heating profit, care must be taken at assembly, that the collector intake is always installed at the lowest point of the collection tube and the collector flow is always installed diagonally at the highest point of the opposite collection tube. Fastening types for the solar absorber Belt fastener Rugged, woven nylon belts with fastening rings, sewn together in loops for simple fastening of the solar absorber units. Distance approximately spaced on the length of the solar absorber Bonding Bonding/glue cartridge 310 ml sufficient for bonding ca m2 of absorber area, in which the distance of the bond strip is cm (according to the roof slant). 9/14

10 Assembly of the solar absorber using belts Belt fastening The belt fastening was developed for the attachment of the assembly-ready Solar Absorber Unit (MFE). The rugged, woven nylon belts (loops) are pulled over the solar absorber unit and connected together between the absorbers With cable binders. The connection rings on the ends of the belts serve to connect the absorbers to the roof and/or for the connection to additional solar absorber units. 11 Roof preparation for the bonding of the solar absorbers Corrugated Eternit Roof: With a new roof, a one-time sweeping is all that is required. With old roofs, scraping of existing moss from the corrugation is required. Should the Eternit be slanted, remove all loose layers. Drill holes, when possible on the wave crest. Tiled Roof: Sweep new roofs. Remove moss on the areas that are to be bonded. Tin Roof: Rusty roofs should be painted with a good bonding color before bonding. Galvanized tin needs only to be swept. With painted roofs, do not remove the old paint layer as the absorber will then have no anchoring. Flat Roof with Gravel Covering: If the gravel is only a few millimeters thick, the gravel can simply be swept away at the bonding area. If the gravel is a few centimeters thick, cement slabs can be laid at 1 meter intervals. The slabs should be around 3 6 cm thick and the size can range between 25x25 cm to 50x50 cm. Other sizes are also possible. They serve as a foundation for the bonding of the collector. Gas cement slabs are not recommended as they freeze in the winter. Flat Roof with Bitumen Surface: A bonding onto bitumen is not recommended. Lay cement slabs. Flat Roof with Plastic-Screens Surfaces: A bonding is possible. We recommend however the laying of cement slabs at the start and end of the solar absorber. 11/14

12 Assembly of the Solar Absorber using Bonding Glue Collector segment rolled out onto the assembly area (see picture) Rolled out MFE-Unit * Bond using a hand squeeze press in strips at intervals of 1 meter on the assembly area. * Press absorber tracks to the glue area. * The collection tubes (see picture) of the individual absorber segments bond together (with PE-Tubes) or glue with bushings (with PVC-Tubes). * The fixation of the collection tubes is done with fixation rings. Assembly Suggestions: Because the absorber only weighs 5 kg/m2 (empty) and 8 kg/m2 (filled), there is a certain creative leeway in the choice of assembly. In order to reach a consistent fluid flow through the absorber as well as to attain the best possible heating gain, care must be taken at assembly, that the collector intake is always installed at the lowest point of the collection tube and the collector flow is always installed diagonally at the highest point of the opposite collection tube (already mentioned). 12/14

13 Tubing up to Filter and/or Pool The tube line must be installed downwards from the roof to the filter, in order that no water pocket can form. This could lead to tube damage by frost. Should water pockets form in the tube line, water drainage must be done at the deepest point! Attention should be paid: Start-up operation of the unit only after finished bonding of the glue (appox. 12 hours). Use bond/glue only at temperatures of +5 C. Only use bond/glue on dry surfaces. The absorber will not be damaged when layed in the direct summer sun during the swimming period. The absorber is UV-safe and frost-proof even after being filled. The collection tubing includes connectors, which must be drained during frost danger. 13/14

14 Troubleshooting: Detection and Correction of Faults Solar absorber rustles and gargles during operation: No incline. Air pocket at upper collector. Upper intake connected, run off below. Return valve not throttled down. No satisfying heating performance: Absorber area is not dimensioned properly or lays in the suns direction. Shade on the solar area eventually enlarge the solar area. Are the intake and return valves properly connected on the solar area? Intake must be attached at the bottom. Solar mats are pressed flat: Check the ventilator and exhaust function and installation position. No Performance: Absorber connections must not be positioned diagonally to each other.
