CP-1TT REMOTE SYSTEM (9 VOLT & 12 VOLT) INTRODUCTION Read these instructions completely. It is recommended that each system be bench tested prior to installation as a standard practice. It is recommended that the installer acquaint himself with the CP- 1TT relay board and probe in the shop; make all adjustments and settings; and study all of the functions. The CP-1TT-9V system includes a CB-1TT-9V relay board and the CP-1 copper probe. When powered with a 9 volt alkaline transistor radio battery, the system can operate about six months; with a 9 volt ULTRA LIFE lithium smoke alarm battery it has been estimated to operate over two years. The CP-1TT-12V system includes a CB-1TT-12V relay board and CP-1 copper probe. This system is usually used to trigger a mid-range or long-range transmitter powered with a 12 volt battery. If there are any questions, Preferred s staff is available at (800) to discuss applications and offer solutions. EARTH GROUND A proper earth-ground is essential for the system s lightning protection and EMF shielding. Normally, burying the CP-1 copper probe is sufficient to meet the grounding requirements. However, in areas where there is a poor earth ground, the probe is inserted in a PVC pipe, or the probe is mounted above ground, the grounding strap that is part of the CP-1 probe should be soldered and clamped to an eight foot copper or copperclad rod driven deeply into the ground (DO NOT use a galvanized ground rod). Extra wire can be added to the grounding strap if needed. SYSTEM AND PROBE DON'T S DO NOT use double sided tape to mount the circuit board on another surface. DO NOT bury the probe within 6 to 10 feet of a buried power or telephone line. DO NOT bury the probe within 6 to 10 feet of a buried invisible dog fence. DO NOT bury the probe within 10 feet of a natural gas line. DO NOT bury the probe within 20 feet of a power pole with a transformer attached to it. DO NOT bury the probe within 100 feet of railroad traffic. DO NOT bury the probe within 200 feet of sub-station type overhead power lines. DO NOT mount the probe vertically when used for above-ground applications. LOCATION OF SENSOR PROBE See Figure 1 on page 2. The sensing range of the probe is 5 to 8 feet with a small car going 5 MPH. Including the width of the car, the probe can cover a 12 foot wide driveway when buried beside it or 24 feet when buried in its center.. The probe should be at least 35 feet back from street traffic going 35 MPH or less and at least 50 feet back from traffic traveling faster than 35 MPH. If the probe is buried in the center of a 12 foot wide driveway, it can be 20 feet or 35 feet back from street traffic respectively, when the probe sensitivity (GAIN) adjustment is decreased. Stationary steel near the probe but not over the probe will not affect its operation. The probe can be placed in a PVC pipe under the steel reinforced grid of a concrete roadway without affecting its operation (see Installing Sensor Probe and Cable ). The probe can cover a 12 foot wide driveway when buried beside it. For wider driveways, the probe, when placed in the center of the drive, will cover up to a 24 foot wide driveway. The probe can be placed parallel, 3

perpendicular, horizontal, or vertical to the driveway surface. The probe can be buried below the ground or mounted above the ground. INSTALLING SENSOR PROBE AND CABLE Figure 1 See Figure 1. Typically, the probe is buried 6-8 inches deep, beside, and parallel with the driveway. It is advisable to bury an additional 6-10 feet of coiled-up wire for future maintenance or possible relocation. In cultured grass, bury the cable 2-3 inches deep. Use a trencher or a gasoline powered lawn edger (or use an abrasive concrete slice blade in frozen ground) to slice at least a 1/4 inch wide trench across the lawn to the transmitter. Push the wire to the bottom of the slice, fill, and tamp. The root system of the grass will capture the wire for life. In field grass or in soil without cultured grass, bury the cable 8 inches deep. When installing cable above ground or through woodland, run it in PVC pipe for mechanical protection, as animals enjoy eating the cable. When there is a need to install the probe in a wide, paved driveway, bore a 1.5 inch diameter hole vertically, 24 inches deep. Slice a groove from the bored hole to the side, install the cable, and patch over both probe and cable with a silicone seal. When installing the sensor probe under and in the center of a dirt or gravel driveway, it is recommended that a 2 inch schedule 80 PVC pipe be placed at a 45 degree angle across the driveway 6-8 inches deep to provide a tunnel in which to place the probe. In new construction, it is recommended to install the probe in the PVC pipe after all landscaping has been completed. NOTE: if the sensor probe is housed in PVC pipe, the probe must be grounded as described in Earth Ground on page 1. CAUTION: Extreme care must be taken when unrolling the sensor probe cable. Put your arm through the center of the cable roll, remove the tape, and unravel the roll one wrap at a time. This practice will save much time, cable and frustration! INSTALLING RELAY BOARD All the sensitive electronics have been designed into the sensor probe; thus, the non-sensitive control board can be mounted in the same box with the transmitter. Install in an outside, weatherproof box, and attach the board, using the nylon supports provided. SENSOR PROBE HOOK-UP See Figure 2 on page 3. The standard length of cable with the sensor probe is 80 feet (longer lengths may be special ordered). The length of cable is not critical and therefore may be shortened to the desired length. 4

Before attaching to the terminal strip, solder-tin all leads (sensor probe cable, power, ground, and relay leads) to insure good contact. Connect the BLACK wire from the sensor probe to the terminal marked BLK. Connect the RED wire from the sensor probe to the terminal marked RED. Connect the SHIELD wire from the sensor probe to the terminal marked SH. POWER HOOK-UP See Figure 2. The CP-1TT-9V system can be operated by a power source from 7.5 VDC to 10 VDC. The CP-1TT-12V can be operated by a power source from 10 VDC to 15 VDC. The negative terminal ( ) on the terminal strip is common connection for the negative side of the power supply and earth ground. The positive terminal (+) on the terminal strip is for the positive side of the power supply. NOTE: It takes about 2 minutes after the voltage is applied before the system can be activated. RELAY OUTPUT Figure 2 The relay output as indicated by COM (common), NC (normally closed) or NO (normally open) is used to activate the transmitter. Some transmitters will be triggered between COM and NO and some require COM and NC to do the same. The relay time (TIME) can be adjusted from about 1/2 second to 2 seconds. RE-TRIGGER HOLD-OFF There is a re-trigger hold-off circuit built into the CP-1TT. After the LED on the relay board goes out, there is a minimum of 10 seconds before the relay can be triggered again, so the LED must be off for at least 10 seconds. If the probe is triggered during the 10 second hold-off period, the relay will not activate and another 10 seconds must elapse after the probe shuts off. The LED indicates when the electronics of the probe are tripped. TRIP-TEST BUTTON The trip test button, located center-left on the circuit board, is a tool to evaluate the overall system and to help in setting the relay time. NOTE: The trip-test button will have no effect on the system if the probe is not connected. ADJUSTING SENSOR PROBE SENSITIVITY Adjustment of the sensor probe (GAIN) essentially changes the sensing range of the probe. The sensor probe will detect a slow moving small car about 5-8 feet away when the GAIN control is set to the half-way point. Increasing the GAIN above the half-way point is not recommended unless it is a low sensitivity area. Low sensitivity is desirable when the probe is installed close to highways, power lines, etc. The lowest amount of sensitivity is allowable when the probe is installed in the middle of the driveway (see Installing Sensor Probe and Cable, p.3). To test sensitivity, use a small car moving slowly (about 5 MPH) past the probe. Adjust potentiometer A (GAIN) fully counter-clockwise and then adjust clockwise in small increments. Wait at least one minute to allow sensitivity change to register before moving the car past the probe again. Adjust clockwise until the car trips the system. 5

TEST/FAULT LED The LED, located at the top left of the circuit board, will operate when the test button is activated or the sensor probe is activated by a passing vehicle. The LED will pulse on for about 1 second and the relay will operate for a minimum of one-half second. If the LED fails to operate when the trip-test button is activated, or if the LED will not shut off, there is a fault in either the relay board or the sensor probe (see Field Troubleshooting below). NOTE: If the probe sensitivity (GAIN) is set very low, the trip-test button will not activate this circuit. FIELD TROUBLESHOOTING Preferred Technologies Group does not give out circuit diagrams or service manuals. However, we seek to provide timely repair service and excellent technical support. Call (800) for help in solving problems in the field. Before calling Preferred, please perform the following basic tests if the system is not responsive: 1. Power the system down and remove the probe wires (BLACK, RED, SHIELD). 2. Power up the relay board. 3. Take a wire and short between where the RED wire and the SHIELD wire were connected to the circuit board. NOTE: make contact with the side of the terminal strip, not on the top where the screws are. The red LED should immediately light up and the relay should operate for the pre-set time or there may be a board failure. 4. If the LED does not light, or the relay does not activate, remove the wire and wait at least a minute and try again. If the relay still does not work, the board has failed. 5. If both the LED and relay work, connect a volt-ohm meter (set on DC) with the negative on the SHIELD terminal and positive on the BLACK terminal. When the trip-test is depressed, there should be approximately 6 volts indicated on the meter. If not, the board has failed. If the relay board passes both tests, there may be wire damage to the probe or the electronics in the probe have failed. If the system has power applied and the LED remains constantly on when the probe is connected and goes out when the probe is disconnected, the problem is probe or probe-cable related. Conversely, if the LED stays on when the probe is removed, this indicates relay board failure. NOTE: The trip-test button will not activate the LED if the probe is not connected. CP-1 PROBE RESISTANCE MEASUREMENT The following resistance measurement values below are given for the purpose of trouble-shooting. They are typical of that measured at the factory using a Fluke model 85 digital multimeter. Each measurement is made with the probe disconnected from the CB-1 relay board. Some tests may require up to 5 minutes for the readings to stabilize (see NOTES on next page). TEST NO. LEAD CONNECTIONS RESISTANCE READING 1 Negative on Shield; Positive on Black between 21 & 24 megohms 2 Negative on Shield; Positive on Red Between 6.5 & 6.9 megohms 3 Negative on Black; Positive on Shield Between 3.9 & 4.3 megohms 4 Negative on Red; Positive on Shield Between 1.4 & 1.9 megohms 5 Negative on Black; Positive on Red Between 12 & 14 megohms 6 Negative on Red; Positive on Black Between 24 & 28 megohms 6

NOTE: If another Fluke model or a different brand of digital multimeter is used, the resistance values you measure might be different than those listed above. NOTE: The polarity of test leads and the order of tests performed should be strictly followed as seen below: SPLICING SENSOR PROBE CABLE The cable supplied with your system is coated with polyure-thane because it will bond with epoxy and make a sealed splice. If you purchase your own cable, make sure it is polyurethane coated or it will not splice. Improper cable splices will cause false alarms. To insure a proper splice, follow the instructions below. Two items are necessary when splicing, both available from Preferred Technologies Group: First, a two-wire shielded direct burial cable (unshielded cable and PVC jacketed cable will not give proper splices). Second, an underground splice kit (made by 3M, part #82-F1; Preferred's part number is CA-1). The following instructions assume you have these products. 1. See Figure A. Strip the outer jacket on one cable back 10 inches and cut the red and black leads to 3 inches, leaving the shield drain wire the full 10 inch length. Strip the outer jacket off the mating cable back 3 inches and strip the jacket of the red and black lead of both cables back 1/2 inch. Twist the black to black and red to red and solder the connections. 2. See Figure B. Trim the red and black joints and tape for proper insulation. Twist the 3 inch shield drain wire to the 10 inch shield drain wire and solder the connection. DO NOT cut off the excess shield drain wire. 3. See Figure C. Wrap aluminum foil around the splice area (to properly shield it). Wrap the 10 inch shield drain wire tightly around the outside of the foil and solder it to itself in order to hold it in place. This procedure insures that any signal to the splice shield will drain to ground and thus prevent false alarms. 4. See Figure D. Place an underground splice kit potting container around the spliced cable and epoxy, following the kit instructions carefully. LIMITED FIVE YEAR WARRANTY All CARTELL products are warranted against defects in material and workmanship for five years. This warranty does not cover defects caused by, but not limited to: acts of God, improper installation, abuse, fire and water damage, electrical surges, and damage to cable caused by slicing, pulling, tangling, or improper splicing.
