Reason (1) Problem The customer reports plain seal oil leakage at the accessory gearbox which causes high oil consumption. (2) Cause The plain seal lips may not be optimal. (3) Solution D. Description Replace the seals with different unique hydrodynamic seals that have: v a lower radial load. v threads which provide positive pumping of oil towards the accessory gearbox and increased seal efficiency. v a wiper lip to prevent movement from its intended position. v improved mistake proofing features. This requires two new parts kits that contain a shaft cleaning device for the field replacement of the seals. Replace the fuel control gearshaft seal (Part A) and accessory gearshaft seal (Part B) with new ones. NOTE: The seals may be replaced individually based on operator need. For Engines at Maintenance - Part A: (1) Remove the old fuel control gearshaft seal listed under the Old P/N column in Para. 2.C., Material Information. Refer to the following maintenance or overhaul manual instructions: v For PW535A, PW535B, PW545A, PW545B and PW545C Engines v Ref. MM ACCESSORY GEARBOX - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES v For PW535E Engines v Ref. MM Task (Fuel Control Drive Seal). (2) Clean the Gearshaft: (a) Before installing the new fuel control gearshaft seal the gearshaft must be cleaned. Clean the gearshaft as follows (Refer to Figure 1): (b) Install o-ring (1) (P/N AS ) into holder (5). (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) (h) Assemble four jaws (3) together using the o-ring (4) (P/N AS ). Install the jaws (3) into the holder (5). Slide tapered end of jaws in first. Install the adjustment screw (6) into the holder (5) one to two turns maximum. Insert the expanding pin (8) through the adjustment screw (6) into the hole in the center of the slots of the jaws (3). Apply a light coat of (PWC03-001) engine oil on the o-ring (1) (P/N AS ) and on the abrasive film (2). With the expanding pin (8) installed in the jaws (3), install the assembly on the gearshaft and into the AGB cover until contact is made with the shoulder of the AGB cover (Refer to Figure 1 Sheet 3). 12 3. Accomplishment Instructions (Cont d) (j) (k) (l) Insert the driver (7) into the assembly, till it engages into the slots of the jaws (Refer to Figure 1 Sheets 1 and 5). Tighten the adjustment screw (6) into the holder (5) till the driver (7) can be rotated without rotating the gearshaft. Hold the holder (5) and rotate the driver (7) in only one direction for approximately 90 seconds (Refer to Figure 1 Sheet 5). (m) Remove the driver (7). (n) Loosen and remove the adjustment screw (6) from the holder (5). (o) Insert the expanding pin (8). CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE ABRASIVE FILM (2) IS STILL ON THE 4 JAWS (3) AFTER REMOVAL OF THE TOOL AND THAT NO ABRASIVE FILM IS LEFT IN AGB GEARSHAFT SEAL/COVER FRONT CAVITY AREA A (REFER TO FIGURE 3). (p) Remove the expanding pin (8) with the four jaws (3). (q) (r) (s) (t) (u) (v) Clean the gearshaft seal surface using isopropyl alcohol (PWC11-014A). Remove the holder (5) from the AGB. Clean the gearshaft surface with isopropyl alcohol (PWC11-014A). Use clean shop towels to absorb any residual oil accumulated in the AGB gearshaft seal/cover front cavity area A as (Refer to Figure 3). Visually inspect the gearshaft surface. If any coked oil is present, repeat the cleaning procedure using a new set of jaws (3) and reinspect until no coked oil is present on the gearshaft. Discard the gearshaft cleaning device. NOTE: This device is made of recyclable plastic. (3) Install the new fuel control gearshaft seal as follows (Refer to Figure 2 and Figure 3): (a) Make sure the seal is correctly positioned on the installation mandrel supplied with the seal. 18 3. Accomplishment Instructions (Cont d) CAUTION: DO NOT APPLY ASSEMBLY FLUID TO THE SEALING ELEMENTS OF THE SEAL. THE GEARSHAFT AND SEALING ELEMENTS OF THE SEAL MUST BE DRY WHEN YOU INSTALL THE SEAL. (b) (c) Lubricate the outer surface of the seal with assembly fluid (PWC06-011). Align the seal and the mandrel pilot with the end of the accessory drive gearshaft. CAUTION: THE SEAL CAN ONLY BE INSTALLED ONCE. IF THE SEAL IS REMOVED FROM THE GEARSHAFT OR FROM THE TEFLON MANDREL, THE SEAL MUST BE DISCARDED. (d) (e) (f) Using the Drift (PWC ), push the seal off the mandrel squarely onto the accessory drive gearshaft and fully against the bottom face of the AGB cover. Discard mandrel. Make sure the seal is below the retaining ring groove of the AGB cover and that there is no evidence of tearing or extrusion of the rubber on the seal OD. Install retaining ring. (g) Install the Fuel Control Unit (FCU) (Ref. Chap ). (h) Write accomplishment of P&WC S.B. No Part A in the engine module log book. B. For Engines at Maintenance - Part B: (1) Remove the old accessory gearshaft seal listed under the Old P/N column in Para. 2.C., Material Information. Refer to the following maintenance or overhaul manual instructions: v For PW535A, PW535B, PW545A, PW545B and PW545C Engines v Ref. MM ACCESSORY GEARBOX - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES v For PW535E Engines v Ref. MM Task (Accessory Drive Seal). (2) Clean the Gearshaft: (a) Before installing the new accessory gearshaft seal the gearshaft must be cleaned. Slide tapered end of jaws in first. Install the adjustment screw (6) into the holder (5) one to two turns maximum. Apply a light coat of (PWC03-001) engine oil on the o-ring (1) (P/N AS ) and on the abrasive film (2). With the expanding pin (8) installed in the jaws (3), install the assembly on the gearshaft and into the AGB cover until contact is made with the shoulder of the AGB cover (Refer to Figure 1 Sheet 3). (i) Remove the expanding pin (8). (j) (k) (l) Insert the driver (7) into the assembly, till it engages into the slots of the jaws (Refer to Figure 1 Sheets 1 and 5). Tighten the adjustment screw (6) into the holder (5) till the driver (7) can be rotated without rotating the gearshaft. Hold the holder (5) and rotate the driver (7) in only one direction for approximately 90 seconds (Refer to Figure 1 Sheet 5). (m) Remove the driver (7). (n) Loosen and remove the adjustment screw (6) from the holder (5). (o) Insert the expanding pin (8). CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE ABRASIVE FILM (2) IS STILL ON THE 4 JAWS (3) AFTER REMOVAL OF THE TOOL AND THAT NO ABRASIVE FILM IS LEFT IN AGB GEARSHAFT SEAL/COVER FRONT CAVITY AREA A (REFER TO FIGURE 3). (p) Remove the expanding pin (8) with the four jaws (3). (q) (r) (s) Clean the gearshaft seal surface using isopropyl alcohol (PWC11-014A). Remove the holder (5) from the AGB. 22 3. Accomplishment Instructions (Cont d) (t) (u) (v) Use clean shop towels to absorb any residual oil accumulated in the AGB gearshaft seal/cover front cavity area A as (Refer to Figure 3). Visually inspect the gearshaft surface. If any coked oil is present, repeat the cleaning procedure using a new set of jaws (3) and reinspect until no coked oil is present on the gearshaft. Discard the gearshaft cleaning device. NOTE: This device is made of recyclable plastic. (3) Install the new accessory gearshaft seal as follows (Refer to Figure 2 and Figure 4): (a) Make sure the seal is correctly positioned on the installation mandrel supplied with the seal. IF THE SEAL IS REMOVED FROM THE GEARSHAFT OR FROM THE TEFLON MANDREL, THE SEAL MUST BE DISCARDED. Using Drift PWC ), push the seal (1) off the mandrel squarely onto the accessory drive gearshaft and fully against the bottom face of the AGB cover. Discard mandrel. (e) Make sure there is no evidence of tearing or extrusion of the rubber on the seal OD. (f) Install the packing (2) on the breather adapter (3). (g) (h) Install the breather adapter (3) with two nuts (5) and washers (4). Torque the nuts, 32 to 36 lbf.in. ( Nm). Write accomplishment of P&WC S.B. No Part B in the engine module log book. C.
