A new special tool set, PN is vailable to remove the bearing assemblies from the drive hub. FIGURE 1 he new tools are designed for use with an arbor or hydraulic press and Kent-Moore bearing remover tool J They must not be used with

NOTE: Some 1980 and 1981 model Eagles were equipped with ball bearing-type hubs which are not serviceable and must be replaced as an assembly only. The non-serviceable bearings can be readily identified, upon removal, by the absence of the axle-to-bearing spacer (18), (Fig. 2). Hub and Bearing Carrier Removal HUB AND BEARING CARRIER REMOVAL - JEEP MODELS 1. Raise the vehicle. 2. Remove the wheel-tire assembly 3. Remove the disc brake caliper but do not disconnect the brake hose. Secure the caliper to the chassis with wire or string.

Remove the brake rotor (5) (Fig. 2). 5. Remove the cotter pin (1), nut retainer (2), axle nut (3), and washer (4) (Fig. 2). 6. Remove the three carrier bolts (17) (Fig. 2). 7. Remove the hub (6), bearing carrier (10) and rotor shield (16) (Fig. 2). HUB AND BEARING CARRIER REMOVAL - EAGLE MODELS 1. Raise the vehicle. 2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.

Secure the caliper to the chassis with wire or string. CAUTION: Do not allow the brake hose to support caliper weight. Be sure to secure the caliper to the chassis. 4. Remove the disc brake rotor (5) (Fig. 2). 5. Remove the cotter pin (1), nut retainer (2), axle nut (3), and washer (4) (Fig. 2). 6. Disconnect the steering arm from the steering knuckle. 7. Remove the caliper anchor plate from the steering knuckle. 8. Remove the three carrier bolts (17) (Fig 2). 9. Remove the hub (6), bearing carrier (10) and rotor shield (16) (Fig. 2). BEARING REMOVAL

5 1987 Jeep Truck Wrangler L L VIN H TBI Copyright 2013, ALLDATA 10.52SS Page 5 CAUTION: The bearing remover tools are designed for use with an arbor or hydraulic press and Kent-Moore bearing remover J They must not be used with any type of impact tool such as a machinist hammer or slide hammer. FIGURE 3. Attach press plate 5073 to the rear of the hub and carrier assembly as shown in (Fig. 3). Secure the press plate with the M12 x 1.75 x 40 mm bolts (A).. Position the assembled hub, carrier and press plate in an arbor or hydraulic press.. Press the hub out of the carrier (B) with press pin 5074 (Fig. 4). FIGURE 4 FIGURE 5. Cut and remove the plastic bearing cage (C) (Fig. 5) from the hub inner bearing. Use diagonal pliers or tin snips to cut the bearing cage. Discard the bearing rollers after removing the cage.

Remove the remaining part of the inner bearing from the hub as follows: Install remover tool J on the inner bearing (D) (Fig. 6). Position the remover tool and hub in an arbor or hydraulic press. FIGURE 7 Press the hub (E) out of the inner bearing (F) with press pin 5074 (Fig. 7).

On Jeep models, remove the carrier seal (15) (Fig. 2). Discard the seal, it is not reusable. 8. On Eagle models, remove the inner bearing (12) (Fig. 2).

On Jeep models, press the inner bearing seal (G), from the hub using the inner race and bearing installer 5078 (Fig. 8). NOTE: Be sure the word "Jeep" on tool 5078 is facing downward toward the hub. FIGURE On Eagle models, position bearing race remover tool 5075 between inner and outer bearing races (H) (Fig. 9). 11. On Jeep models, position bearing race remover tool 5076 between inner and outer bearing races (H) (Fig. 9). 12. Position press pin 5074 (Fig. 9) on bearing race remover tool. FIGURE Place on press and press out inner bearing race, rotate and press out outer bearing race (Fig. 10). CAUTION: Never use anything other than prescribed tools to remove bearing races as damage to the internal machined shoulder of the

9 1987 Jeep Truck Wrangler L L VIN H TBI Copyright 2013, ALLDATA 10.52SS Page 9 Bearing Installation bearing carrier could result. 1. Thoroughly clean hub (6) (Fig. 2) and bearing carrier (10) (Fig. 2) with mineral spirits. Dry using compressed air.

Position bearing race (J) (Fig. 11) into bearing carrier 4. Position bearing installer tool 5077 on outer bearing race. NOTE: Be sure appropriate end of bearing race installer tool 5077 is facing downward, toward bearing carrier. One end of bearing installer is marked "Eagle" the other end is marked "Jeep".. Rotate assembled press plate with bearing carrier and repeat steps 3 and 4 for inner race. AUTION: Do not overload press when installing bearing races. Bearing races should be flush with machined shoulder of bearing carrier FIGURE Pack outer bearing (K) (Fig. 12) and coat race with AMC/Jeep/Renault All Purpose Lubricant P/N Place bearing (K) into bearing carrier (L), (Fig. 12).

Coat lip of bearing seal with grease. FIGURE Press bearing carrier (O), (Fig. 14) onto hub (P), (Fig. 13) using bearing installer 5078 and bearing race installer 5077, (Fig. 14). NOTE: Be sure appropriate end of bearing race installer tool 5077 is facing downward toward hub. One end of the bearing race installer tool is marked "Eagle" the other end is marked "Jeep". FIGURE Pack inner bearing (Q) (Fig. 15) and coat race with AMC/Jeep/Renault All Purpose Lubricant P/N On Jeep models, coat lip of inner bearing seal (R), (Fig. 15) with grease and place on inner bearing.

Position inner bearing (U), (Fig. 16) in bearing carrier (T), (Fig. 16). 15. On Jeep models, place inner bearing and seal (V), (Fig. 16) on bearing carrier (U), (Fig. 16). 16. Install seal installer tool 5080 (Fig. 16) and press inner bearing (U) (Fig. 16) and seal (V) (Fig. 16) onto hub.

Bearing carrier should rotate freely after inner bearing is installed. Do not attempt to eliminate all bearing lash "freeplay" when operating the press. Final preload will be achieved by tightening the drive axle nut (3) (Fig. 2). NOTE: On Jeep models, be sure bearing seal is seated squarely in machined surface of bearing carrier. 7. On Jeep models, install carrier seal using tool Hub and Bearing Carrier Installation

14 1987 Jeep Truck Wrangler L L VIN H TBI Copyright 2013, ALLDATA 10.52SS Page 14 HUB AND BEARING CARRIER INSTALLATION - EAGLE MODELS 1. Thoroughly clean axle shaft (20) (Fig. 2) and apply a thin coating of lithium grease. Install axle shaft-to-bearing spacer (18) (Fig. 2). 2. Install rotor shield (16) to the bearing carrier (10) and hub (6), (Fig. 2). Coat O-ring (11) with grease and install it to the carrier assembly 3. Apply Locktite, , and install the three carrier bolts (17) (Fig. 2) tighten bolts to 102 N-m (75 ft.lbs.). 4. Install caliper anchor plate to the steering knuckle. Tighten bolts to 136 N-m (100 ft.- lbs.) torque. 5. Connect steering arm to steering knuckle. Tighten bolts to 136 N-m (100 ft.-lbs.) torque. 6. Install disc brake rotor and caliper.

Install nut retainer (2) and cotter pin (1), (Fig. 2). NOTE: Do not loosen the nut to fit the retainer. Tighten the nut to the next available slot.. Install wheel and tire assembly 0. Lower vehicle. Tighten bolts to 102 N-m (75 ft.lbs.) torque (Fig. 2). 4. Install disc brake rotor and caliper. 5. Install washer (4), axle nut (3) and tighten to 237 N-m (175 ft.lbs.) torque (Fig. 2). 6. Install nut retainer (2) and cotter pin (1), (Fig. 2). 7. Install wheel and tire assembly. 8. Lower vehicle.
