4 CHERRY-BURRELL CORPORATION Superhomo Single Superhomo Single-Stage Value Single-stage valves are suitable for use on low fat products. Simple construction minimizes cleanup time and maintenance. All product contact surfaces are stainless steel. Valve plug and seat are hard surfaced. They are ground flat for greater efficiency, uniformity of homogenization, and ease of maintenance. Double Service Life: Valve parts are interchangeable and reversible. If one set of surfaces finally becomes worn, the opposite set of surfaces can be used. This exclusive feature doubles the service life of the parts before need of regrinding. Cylinder block ( illustrated) as used on Models SS--TGR and SS-7-TGR. Superhomo Two-Stage Value Where the greatest possible dispersion and viscosity reduction is desired, as for example in ice cream mix or high fat products, the Superhomo with the two-stage homogenizing valve is recommended. The second-stage valve is installed on top of the cylinder block over the discharge position of the first-stage valve. Each stage can be adjusted as desired. independently of each other. Each can be assembled or disassembled without disturbing the other. All parts are identical and interchangeable between first- and second-stage valves except adapter and bonnet. How the Superhomo Homogenizing Value Operates You're looking now at the homogenizing valve plug and seat... and perforated replaceable valve caps. It is here that high-speed shearing action reduces the size of fat globules as they pass between the valve plug and seat mating surfaces. Steady pumping pressure assures thorough and even particle dispersion throughout the product does it so completely that there is no liquid separation back to a pre-homogenized state. Yet this entire operation is done at lower pressures so that operating expense and maintenance are surprisingly low.

Because the caps take 98% of the wear, valves can be easily maintained in top condition. There's no need to depend on the human element to tell when parts need regrinding. The valve caps may be replaced daily, or can be easily sterilized and used until showing wear. Incoming liquids (at right) contain fat globules ranging from two to 2 microns in size all unequally dispersed throughout the product. Fluid flow at this point is 3 feet per second As the product passes between the valve seat and plug, it undergoes an extreme, instantaneous change in velocity from 3 feet per second to 3 feet per second. Velocity calculation is based on 18 to 2 p.s.i. operating pressure. As each globule enters the zone of this tenfold velocity increase and 9 direction change, small particles of from one to two microns in size are sheared off and evenly distributed throughout the product.

8 Superhomo Homogenizer Vari-Range Drive and Power End Features Model TGR Twin Gear Reduction Drive Twin helical gears on the Superhomo are extra wide, carry oil to the reservoir which distributes oil evenly to all bearing surfaces. All gears run in a bath of oil. Gives positive, automatic lubrication. Extra width serves to balance the load and extend bearing life. Timken roller bearings reduce friction, permit easier maintenance. Model SGR Single Gear Reduction View of crankshaft with bearings, main gear and pinion. These drive end parts are constructed of a special steel with high strength and wear resistance. Model SGR Superhomos are equipped as standard with a pressure lubrication system including an automatic low-oil-pressure cut-off switch. Model VBR V-Belt Reduction Employs a heavy-duty multiple V-Belt drive from motor to Superhomo eccentric shaft. Due to the relatively low horsepower motors used in this model, speed reduction gears are not required. Superhomo Vari-Range Drives Every Superhomo covers a wide range of capacities. Connecting rods are of nodular cast iron with replaceable babbit-lined bearing inserts, with laminated shim adjusting. Roller bearings are used on both the main shaft and pinion shaft of Model SGR and on the main shaft of Model VBR. 8

The homogenizing valve assembly in these models is identical in design to that of the larger Superhomos. Sizes are proportioned to give maximum efficiency for these capacities. As in all larger units, both single- and twostage homogenizing valves are available. Power End Assembly "Stellar Series" power end provides the simplest and most economical drive for homogenizers of these capacities. No gears are used. Power is transmitted direct from the motor to the eccentric by V-belt drive. Motor is mounted above the frame on a separate plate that can be adjusted to provide for proper V-belt tension. Because the Superhomo is more efficient, lower operating pressures can be used. This means smaller motors are needed.
