Production soared to 330,061 cars. On March 1, 1941, Pontiac began building Oerlikon 20mm anti-aircraft cannons for the U.S. Navy In 1942, the government mandated domestic automakers to drastically reduce their use of chrome. After December 15, 1941, all parts that would normally have been chrome plated, except for bumpers, now had painted surfaces. These cars, which were less attractive than the original 1942 models, became known as blackout models. Pontiac also began manufacturing Bofors automatic field guns for the U. S. Army. In addition, Pontiac made the front axle assembly for the M-5 high speed tank, parts for Detroit Diesel two-stroke diesel engines, as well as aircraft launched torpedoes for the Navy. The division built it s last car on Feb 10, 1942, a blackout model, and it is said that this was the last car built by any domestic automaker during WWII. As the war drew to a close, the military contracts ended, one by one. The next challenge was to revert to civilian production as quickly as possible. Pontiac enlarged it s foundry, revamped it s engine plant to add more machinery, and aimed to double production to 500,000. In November 1945, GM workers went on strike, and 1946 was a year of general labor unrest. Strikes affected the steel, mining, trucking and shipping industries, as well as the railroads. The unavailability of new cars during the war years combined with car hungry troops returning home enabled Pontiac as well as other manufacturers to sell every car they could build. 2 VOLUME 5, ISSUE 8 PAGE 2 TREASURER S TRAVELS Tom Diot Have you ever been broken down on the side of the road? Did you ever get your car running with whatever you had in the trunk? When I was 20 years old, while my friend and I were driving back to the NAVY base in Millington, TN, he told me told me he didn t have a clutch anymore, the pedal was at the floor. After pulling over, since I was enrolled in auto/diesel/gas turbine mechanics school, I slid under his late 60 s Mustang Fastback. (Yes, under the car. I was a lot thinner and younger.) I found that one connecting parts of the clutch linkage was gone! After looking in his trunk for tools and something to cludge into a linkage, we found a foot-long rat-tail file. Since it was a little too long, we shortened it by hitting the end off with a rock. I somehow screwed a nut onto the handle of the file and wedged it into the linkage. It got the clutch working good enough to get us back to the barracks after stopping for a celebratory pitcher of beer! What s your side of the road repair story? 11 VOLUME 5, ISSUE 8 PAGE 11 SDPOCI CAR & MEMBER SPOTLIGHT DALE LEE By Tom Diot Twelve years ago, Dale Lee bought his red 1960 Pontiac Ventura from a private builder because of its styling and performance. It was equipped with a 389 V-8 engine, automatic transmission and a 4-barrel carburetor. This exciting Pontiac has power steering, power brakes and power windows. Since he bought this Ventura, Dale has done a total restoration including seats, doors headliner and carpets. The custom work done includes the body lowered & shaved, removed the door handles and emblems, installed dual bellflower exhaust lake pipes, polished torque thruster wheels and an awesome viper red paint job. The interior is now colored with a beautiful red/white tuck & roll custom upholstery. Dale says the best things he likes about his Ventura are the looks he gets while driving it, the trophies he wins at shows and the car s wide-track classic looks. His all-time favorite memory with this great Pontiac was the excitement of buying it and driving it home! He drives it only to car shows and he says he would someday sell this car because Dale would like to own a Fiero GT with a Ferrari 308 GT replica body installed. Asked if he has owned any other Pontiacs or collector cars, Dale states he maintains his private museum in East San Diego County. His current collection consists of classics, muscle cars, hot rods and customs totaling 31 vehicles with 4 Mustangs, 6 Nissans as well as a 78 Datsun, a 65 Rivera, a 57 Chevy Bel Air, a 68 Chevy Corvair, other assorted Fords, 1929 Model A Hot Rods, 50 s customs and his 3 prized Pontiacs. He has been a SDPOCI Member for 14 years. Dale has purchased and driven new Pontiacs for over 50 years and loved the classic styling and performance of his classic Ponchos. Now he s enjoying the nostalgia feeling of owning and driving a few surviving Pontiac classics from the 1960 s. 11

Owner J Bittle donated some dyno pulls and other high performance products for the raffle. Master jeweler JC Dumas donated a one-of-a-kind hand-made old logo Ford V8 finger ring and local professional photographer Chris Kay donated two Custom PhotoShoots. Current and former US Navy Seals were in attendance and spoke of the importance of the work JBA is doing to support our wounded heros. The San Diego Chapter of the Pontiac Oakland Club International (POCI) was founded in We are a club dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of all models of Pontiacs of all years. We drive em, work on em, polish em, restore em, break em, put em back together again and have great fun doing it! We are individuals, couples, and families that enjoy getting together for a variety of activities. We host an annual Pontiacs in Paradise car show every summer, and participate as a club in other local and regional shows. We hold annual pool and Christmas parties, participate in many of the San Diego cruise nights, organize automotive factory, speed shop and museum tours, and join in a variety of other events throughout the year. The cars in the club range from Concourse cars, show cars, daily drivers, drag racers, and cars undergoing restoration. Our goal is to have FUN while driving our Pontiacs.
