4 Preface This application guide has been created to give the contractor a helping hand with the application of the Velocity Plus system. The information in this guide is a compilation of many rigorous tests and is meant to give direction in load calculations, outlet location, CFM per outlet, capacity of a system, and the choosing of the correct part and pieces to complete the installation. The guide is not to be used to give exact CFM per outlet, but more as a tool to keep the system in balance. Load calculations are required in order to select the proper equipment and duct system needed to properly heat and/or cool the structure. Contractors using this guide, prior to installation, will save time and money. Pre-planning the installation and having all the proper parts and equipment at the jobsite will speed-up the installation. Designing a system with adequate capacity and number of outlets will ensure a quiet and trouble-free operating system. We, at EspiTech would like to thank you for purchasing our product. 7 Load Calculations Preparing a load calculation for any structure is a necessity. It is especially necessary when installing a Velocity Plus system. To properly install a high pressure system, such as, Velocity Plus, the contractor will need a room-byroom load, in order to calculate the sensible load and CFM requirements of the room. This establishes the correct number of runs needed in each room. With today s many types of structures, with varying amounts of windows, doors, and insulation factors, a load calculation becomes critical. There are many load calculations books and programs available in the market today. Always choose a load calculation system that is written according to the Ashrae standards. The most common system is the Manual J and it is readily available to all contractors. Electronic programs, such as, Wright J or Elite are also very good methods to perform load calculations. If you do not have any of the above or others, this application guide has a simple form, on the next pages. This form can be used for room-by-room calculations and generally will give the user an approximate answer. Most loads performed on this sheet tend to give higher results than more advanced programs, as mentioned above. Remember, any load calculation is better than no calculation at all! Some Terms to be familiar with: Exterior walls all walls exposed to the outside elements or any unconditioned space. Temperature Difference- the difference between the outside or unconditioned space and the conditioned space. Factors The BTUH gain or loss of a window, door, wall, ceiling, or floor per square foot. Net Wall the exterior wall minus the windows and doors in that wall. Volume The rooms volume can be calculated by the Height x Width x Length. Measured in Cubic feet. Sensible Gain the total amount of heat gain that can be measured dry heat. 5

10 Planning the Layout 1. After calculating the load, determine the Total Sensible Gain only, as specified on the Quick Load Sizing Form, SUB-TOTAL BTUH (Sensible Gain). All rooms must be added together to get the total load. 2. Use the Total Sensible Gain to select the proper system from the Equipment Selection Guide (ESG) on the next 2 pages. The Sensible load must fall between one of the two capacities of each selection. 3. From the ESG choose a system based on the type of outlets are wanted on the job. Choose either a 2 or a 3 inch system and use the ones with the maximum amount of outlets. This can be changed later on in the process. 4. Now, looking at the chosen system on the ESG, note the CFM in that line, for example; 3 Outlets Sensible Btuh per CFM = ,850 Btuh Sensible. The CFM noted is 1032 and the Sensible Btuh per CFM is There is a sample house on page 13. The sample will make it easier to follow these instructions. The Sensible Gain for this house is 24,000 Btuh. Therefore by choosing the above system, we are assured of a capacity of 24,850 Btuh (capacity is a function of the condensing unit brand and type chosen, we have determined the average). 6. To determine the CFM required in each room we must calculate the following: Total Sensible Capacity / 960 CFM. For this system, it is 24,850 / 960 or Btuh per CFM. Now, take the sensible gain of each room and divide it by to determine the CFM requirement of each room. For example; a room with a 2589 Btuh sensible gain would require 100 CFM. 7. Next, we need to determine the average CFM per outlet. This simply is calculated by dividing the CFM (960) by the number of outlets (18). 960 / 18 = CFM. 8. Using the CFM per outlet, we can now start laying out the outlets in the room. Looking at the sample house, bedroom 3 requires 100 CFM. Since the average CFM per outlet is 53.34, we can assume to place 2 outlets in this room. Outlets should be placed along the exterior walls near windows and doors. Continue placing outlets in every room as required. 8
11 9. Using the ESG, note the model of the blower and coil just below the Sensible Gain capacities. Using these models choose a type of duct system that best fits the application. Two types are available, single air distribution box and split air distribution box systems. Use pages 16 thru 23 to choose the best system. From the sample house, we chose a single box system because it is a simple ranch that is not too long. 10. First, determine the best location for the Air Distribution box (ADC), then work back to the equipment, using the 11 Alumicore plenum. It is best to centrally locate the box, in order to keep the 3 inch duct runs rather close in length, as shown in the sample house. 11. Once the ADC is situated, determine the length of each run from the box to each outlet. Also try to determine the number of 90 degree turns required to make the connections. The actual length of each run is the distance of the run plus 8.0 feet for every 90 degree turn. For example, in the sample house, bedroom 3 has a 35 foot straight run with one 90 degree elbow. This makes an equivalent length of 43 feet. Perform this for all outlets. See spreadsheet on page Using the CFM per outlet chart, determine the CFM per outlet using the equivalent lengths determined above. Perform this task on all the duct runs. Once all runs are calculated, add them together to get the total CFM of the system. The real total CFM will fluctuate based on the static pressure of the system and the blower performance. However, if the total CFM calculated is 20% or more higher than the original rated CFM, then a lower speed may be required. For example, the sample house calculated CFM is 1041 and the system rated CFM is 960. So, to verify the system, simply multiply the 960 x 1.20, which is 1152 CFM. Therefore, the 1024 calculated CFM is well within the range at only 6.7% higher. The last thing to do is to centrally locate the return air grill, preferably in a hallway, and run the return air duct from the back of the coil section to the grill. Long return air duct will increase duct static and lower air flow. 9
