9 Prepreg Blade Technology Prepreg technology was the pre-merger Vestas standard and accounts for about ¾ of blades manufactured by Vestas. It is a very clean and predictable manufacturing technique, but it requires a lot of expensive tooling. Design principle to use a structural spar with lightweight shells to provide the aerodynamic shape. 9 Presentation title, April 3, 2009

10 Prepreg Blade Technology Spars are wound around massive male mandrels. Shells manufactured using Prepreg technology in composite female moulds. All sub-structures bonded into the shells and closed within the mould. 10 Presentation title, April 3, 2009

11 Wood Blade Technology Initially exotic hardwoods, then Poplar sheets - still running in USA 20 years on Changed to longitudinal Birch plywood for 26m and 31m blades, which in 1998 were the largest production blades in the world. 13 Wood/Carbon Blade Technology Wood Carbon technology first developed in 2001 on a 40m blade for the NM82 (now a V82). Developed to improve H&S standards, only handling dry materials:- glass, wood, carbon, balsa. 13 Presentation title, April 3, 2009

14 Wood/Carbon Blade Technology Using less than 5% carbon we took about a 1/3rd out of the blade weight. Developed Dry Lay-Up of root end fixings. Strip planking was the key development to the Dry Lay-Up process. Allowing dry vacuum consolidation. 14 Presentation title, April 3, 2009
