Method of Compliance: Step 1: Use the provided N TEMPLATE drawing to cut a NACA opening on the upper left face of the cowling. Remove cowl from aircraft before cutting. Step 2: Trim the COWL NACA Scoop to the scribe lines. Position the Scoop for best fit around the NACA opening and aim toward the installed position of the Regulator. Step 3: Mark the inside surface of the upper cowl around the perimeter of the Scoop when the best position is achieved. Step 4: Bond the COWL to the upper cowling using an epoxy flox mixture. A few #40 holes and wax coated clecos work well to hold position and clamp force until the epoxy is cured enough to be rubbery. See Figure 1. Set aside in a warm area to cure. The cowl should remain as close to installed contour as possible during the cure.

2 FIGURE 1: BOND DUCT TO COWLING Step 5: Fill the edges of the COWL to cowl interface to make a nearly sharp corner along the sides as indicated in Figure 1. Fill and sand to provide a smooth transition from the cowl surface to the duct. Finish and paint as desired. Step 6: Remove the EFIS screen then the transponder from the transponder tray. For D- 180 equipped aircraft remove the F-1240 Upper Forward Fuselage Skin shown in KAI 29A-06 for access. Remove the left mount screw from the transponder tray and discard. NOTE: D-180 Equipped aircraft will not have the pre-existing mount holes in the Firewall Assembly. Use visual cues from the Figures and the Duct aim point to approximate location. Match-drill the Firewall using the FF with the Regulator attached to ensure clearance from the F-1240 attachment screws. Step 7: Remove the pins from the Ducati regulator connector. See Figure 2. The connector will not be reused in this installation.

3 FIGURE 2: REMOVE WIRES FROM CONNECTOR Step 8: Mount the EA-F4120 Silent Hektik Voltage Regulator to the FF Regulator Adapter Plate and to the Firewall following KAI Page (Rev 1 or greater). Step 9: If the regulator was previously installed in the cockpit area reroute the shielded generator cable (coming from the engine with two yellow wires forking out) to the forward mounting position and reseal the lower firewall penetration. Reroute the WH-P156 (WHT) wire (this wire splits into two, part of the WH Power Wiring Harness) through the upper firewall penetration grommet shown on Page 45A-04. Step 10: Leaving as much wire as possible cut the terminals from the ends of both WH- P156 wires. Step 11: Find the WH-P761 (YEL) wire. Cut the WH-P761 (YEL) wire (that formerly connected to the Ducati regulator) 3 inches from the terminal to make the WH-P3069 (YEL) pigtail. See KAI Figure 4. Cap WH-P761 (YEL) wire with heat shrink or remove the wire from the Firewall Forward D-Sub Pin 21 at the AV NOTE: Cover the ends of any bare spade connectors with heat shrink. Step 12: Add terminals to the ends of the WH-P156 (WHT) wires. These will become P204 and P205. In one of the terminals double crimp the WH-P3069 (YEL) wire. See KAI Figure 4. Step 13: Fabricate the WH-P3067 and WH-P3068 wires shown in Figure 4 out of 16 AWG (WHT) wire using the wire ends and lengths shown. Step 14: Follow the steps on KAI to connect the electrical wires to the regulator. Step 15: Connect the WH-P3070 Regulator Warning Wire to the engine monitor. D-180 equipped aircraft do not support this function, discard the WH-P3070 Wire (see the note below for an optional D-180 solution).

4 Download then install new EFIS software/settings using the Readme file found on the downloads page of the Van s Aircraft Web Site. NOTE: Optionally for D-180 customers a labeled VREG WARNING light may installed into the panel (location at pilots discretion but the light should be located on the pilot s half of the panel). Connect a wire from Pin 30 FUEL PUMP on the WH-RV12-TUNNEL 37 Pin harness through 5A inline fuse to the positive terminal of the light. Connect the negative terminal of the light to the regulator warning wire. These parts are sold separately from this upgrade kit. Step 16: Route the WH-P3068 wire with the wire bundle and then along the VA-213 Oil Supply Hose towards the battery. Connect the ring terminal on WH-P3068 to the minus terminal of the battery See Figure 3. Tie-wrap the wires as necessary for support. FIGURE 3: ROUTING WH-P3068 Step 17: Fill the edges of the COWL to cowl interface to make a nearly sharp corner along the sides as indicated in Figure 1. Fill and sand to provide a smooth transition from the cowl surface to the duct. Trim the lower left edge of the COWL to remove any interference with the left carburetor choke and throttle cables. Finish and paint as desired. Step 18: Test run the engine to confirm proper charging system operation. This regulator has a voltage ramp up schedule and comes online at a relatively low voltage which steps up over time (it will take approximatly 30 mins to reach full voltage output). This feature protects the regulator from high outputs that would be required when starting with a depleted battery, especially Li based batteries. The voltage regulator will give a warning via the EFIS for one of three reasons. 1) Overvoltage condition

5 2) No generator output 3) Over Temp Condition When this occurs the warning output pin on the voltage regulator is pulled to ground. For this reason any one of the reasons above could cause the warning seen on the EFIS screen. If a warning is seen, all three possibilities should be considered. If the generator fails and causes an overvoltage condition the regulator will shut down automatically and give a warning. If the generator fails and no longer provides output, a warning will be given. Without the engine running when the master switch is first turned on a warning will be shown because there is no generator output. Note that all these warnings indicate that the generator is no longer charging the battery or supplying power to the main bus. Cross check the battery voltage. If it is <13v and dropping, land as soon as practicable. If an over-temp condition occurs the voltage regulator will continue to supply power to the main bus (the bus voltage will remain normal) but a warning will be given. This will most likely occur in elevated temperatures during ground lengthy operations, during a long climb at slow airspeed, or after extended periods of slow flight just above stall speed. These are extreme conditions not seen during most normal operations. If a temperature warning occurs in flight, reduce the angle of attack and increase airspeed to help the flow of cooling air across the voltage regulator. If a warning occurs on the ground, increase the engine rpm to force more air through the cooling duct. Prolonged operation at elevated temperatures will fail the regulator. WARNING: This voltage regulator is rated for a higher amperage throughput than the Ducati regulator it replaces. Do not take this as license to add further electrical load to the system (landing lights etc.). Higher loads imposed on the electrical system may cause the stator to fail, which will be a very extensive and costly repair! Step 19: Make a logbook entry indicating compliance with Notification Place a copy of this notification in the back of the maintenance manual for your aircraft. Note the addition of this notification to the bottom of the Maintenance Manual table of contents. PART NUMBER Qty Item 1 12 REGULATOR KIT NOTE: This new regulator is an optional change. It will not be supplied as a warranty replacement for failed Ducati regulators supplied by Rotax. If you have a failed regulator that can be replaced under warranty, you may wish to do that. If the regulator is out of warranty, we suggest that you replace it with this one.
