3 University of Minnesota Display & Trial Garden 2014 Flower Trials North Central Research and Outreach Center (NCROC) Grand Rapids Location # Cultivars In 2014, 220 unique cultivars were evaluated in field plots, baskets and containers. Fifty-two shade plots were included, along with 130 baskets and 52 containers. Greenhouse Growing Problems Both seed and plug materials were received this year. Plug materials were in very good condition. Greenhouse growth and development were generally good. Grow lights were not used this season. Water-soluble fertilizer was used to promote growth. Plant materials were moved from a center greenhouse with warmer temperatures to a cooler house as growth progressed. Malathion was used for control of aphids and Gnatrol was used for control of fungus gnats. Planting Date In 2014 all seedlings were transplanted to the field during the weeks of June 15 th and 22 nd into rows 4 feet apart, with 10 plants per plot on 1-foot centers. Hanging baskets (12 x 7 ) and containers (large: 20 x 18 and small: 18 x 10 ) were potted in late May and early June with 3-5 plugs per basket or container. These were set out in mid-june. Weather Conditions and Frost Date The 2014 growing season started with very wet and somewhat cool conditions. Temperatures in July and August were also below average, with July being very dry. Heat, as measured by corn degree days, was about 6% below normal for the three-month growing season. Conditions for September have been pleasant, but cool temperatures and an early frost on September 12 th and 13 th ended the active growing period. Fertilization Fertilizer was broadcast at planting (40 pounds of N per acre of ) as well as applied in a liquid starter drench ( ). In early July, was broadcast on all beds at the rate of 40 pounds of N per acre. In early August, beds were fertilized with at a rate of 15 pounds of N per acre. To encourage growth and bloom, a liquid fertilizer (NutriLeaf ) was applied to all basket and container plantings weekly starting in mid-july. The liquid fertilizer was applied at half-strength to start and increased to full-strength by mid-august. Osmocote, a slow-release fertilizer, was added to the soil mix for hanging baskets and containers. Irrigation Overhead irrigation was done as needed for the main field planting. Shade plantings were watered with t-tape (drip). Drip emitter irrigation was used for all hanging baskets and containers, and all new emitters were installed this year. Baskets were monitored closely for proper watering and generally performed better than last year. Weed Control XL2G (surflan) herbicide was applied just after planting in the main plot for pre-emergent weed control. The herbicide was applied at a lesser rate than previous years to minimize damage to developing foliage. This lower rate did result in less damage to plants, but weed control was negatively affected. Rototilling between rows was performed later in the season to augment the herbicide. Shade plots and plots of herbicide-sensitive varieties were maintained with hand weeding. Disease Problems/Pest Control Aster yellows was a less serious problem this year, and Baythroid was sprayed once in July for leaf-hopper control. Some petunias an a few marigolds were affected by aster yellows, but there was much less disease than in prior years Deadheading Baskets and containers were deadheaded on a regular basis, as needed. Field plantings were deadheaded in late August in preparation for Horticulture Day. General Performance Summary Field flower performance was generally good this year. Disease pressure was lighter than normal. Coleus and begonias in the shade area put on an impressive display. Many petunias bloomed well in August, especially those in the Supertunia and Success series. Lantana selections bloomed beautifully in baskets, and the ornamental pepper NuMex Easter was a charming new introduction. Events Events at North Central Research and Outreach Center include Horticulture Day on the last Wednesday of August and several field tours during the season for garden groups and visitors.
