6 R11346 CORDLESS DRILLS DW980 - DW981 - DW984 - DW987 - DW988 (Launched at Type 10 to indicate built in Spennymoor, UK Type 1 units might be built in Easton, USA at a later date) Grease (800) is used in the gearbox (2) 1) Remove battery before dis-assembling unit. 2) Static control precautions must be taken when handling the switch assembly components. 3) Gearboxes are only available as complete assemblies and should not be dismantled. Chuck (26) and Chuck Screw (27) removal The chuck and chuck screw are assembled to these units with a very high tightening torque approximately 3-4 times tighter than previous cordless drills: Chuck to spindle = 42.4 to 45.2Nm Chuck screw = 6.8 to 9.0Nm This will lead to some instances where it will not be possible to remove the chuck or screw in the normal way and a special Service jig ( ) will have to be used. Removal procedure: Place Service tool (29) in a bench vice (Fig 1) Fig 1 R11346en.rtf Page 1 of 2

7 Undo and remove 4 screws (17) and ease off chuck and front gearcase assembly (28). Place assembly over jig, locating screw bosses over pins and ensuring the double D spindle is fully home in the jig (Fig 2) Fig 2 Remove chuck screw (27). This screw has a left-hand thread and a Torx T20 head. Remove chuck (26) using a torque wrench and a 19mm socket (Fig 3) Fig 3 R11346en.rtf Page 2 of 2
