Description SPC-P-1 for 120 V, SPC-P-2 for V The DigiTrace SPC-P is a pipe-mounted NEMA Type 4X and IP66 rated temperature indicating power connection kit. It is designed for use only with 120 V and V Raychem BTV-CR, BTV-CT, QTVR-CT, XTV-CT, KTV-CT, and VPL-CT heating cables and Pyrotenax Type A & D MI heating cables in hazardous and nonhazardous locations. These kits may be installed at temperatures as low as 40 F ( 40 C). For easier installation store above freezing until just before installation. For additional information, contact your Pentair Thermal Management representative or call (800) Tools Required Wire cutters Marking pen Utility knife Pliers or adjustable wrench Needle-nose pliers Large slotted screwdriver 3/8 in hex key (required for MI cable installations) 1/4 in or smaller slotted screwdriver Wire stripper (for VPL-CT) Additional Materials Required Pipe strap GT-66 or GS-54 glass cloth tape For MI cables: MI cable grounding kit Catalog No: MI-GROUND-KIT OPTIONAL Materials Recommended conduit drain Catalog No: JB-DRAIN-PLUG-3/4IN P/N Small pipe adapter for 25 mm (1 in) and smaller pipes Catalog No: JBS-SPA P/N E WARNING: This component is an electrical device that must be installed correctly to ensure proper operation and to prevent shock or fire. Read these important warnings and carefully follow all of the installation instructions. To minimize the danger of fire from sustained electrical arcing if the heating cable is damaged or improperly installed, and to comply with the requirements of Pentair Thermal Management, agency certifications, and national electrical codes, groundfault equipment protection must be used. Arcing may not be stopped by conventional circuit breakers. Component approvals and performance are based on the use of Pentair Thermal Management-specified parts only. Do not use substitute parts or vinyl electrical tape. The black heating cable core and fibers are conductive and can short. They must be properly insulated and kept dry. Damaged bus wires can overheat or short. Do not break bus wire strands when scoring the jacket or core. Keep components and heating cable ends dry before and during installation. Use only fire resistant insulation materials, such as fiberglass wrap or flame-retardant foam. CAUTION: Health Hazard: Prolonged or repeated contact with the sealant in the core sealer may cause skin irritation. Wash hands thoroughly. Overheating or burning the sealant will produce fumes that may cause polymer fume fever. Avoid contamination of cigarettes or tobacco. Consult MSDS VEN0033 for further information. Health Hazard: Gel in the splices may cause eye and skin irritation. Wash exposed areas thoroughly with soap and water. Consult MSDS VEN0046 for further information. 5 A6 Installing core sealer A7 Mark the jacket as shown. Caution: Health Hazard. Wash hands after contact with sealant. Consult material safety data sheet VEN0033. If needed, re-twist and straighten bus wires, then insert into the guide tubes as shown. 5/8 in (15 mm) Make sure all strands go into the tubes. Tubes A8 Push core sealer onto the heating cable to the mark made in step A6. Note: Extra force may be required for larger cables or at lower temperatures. A9 Remove the guide tubes and dispose of them in a plastic bag. Make sure the bus wires do not kink, bunch, or crossover. A10 Slip the green/ yellow tube onto the braid. Heatshrinking is not required. A11 Pull heating cable back into stand so 1 in (25 mm) is exposed as shown. Use cable lubricant if needed. Position RTD in stand as shown. 1/2 in (13 mm) 1 in (25 mm) 4 in (100 mm) Trim bus wires and braid. 1/2 in (13 mm) 5 / 14
A12 Fastening stand to pipe Fasten stand to pipe with label facing desired direction of box opening. Do not pinch heating cable. Loop and tape extra heating cable to pipe. Tape heating cable and RTD to pipe with glass cloth tape. Note: For 1 in (25 mm) and smaller pipes use adapter (purchased separately) and install between stand and pipe. Note: Place RTD away from heating cable, preferably on the bottom half of the pipe at the 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock position. RTD Pipe Heating cable Pipe strap Glass cloth tape JBS-SPA adapter for small pipes Position adapter this side up. A13 Installing the enclosure A14 (Optional) To change direction of box opening: Screw box onto stand until it stops. Do not overtighten. Loosen lock nut. Lift box and rotate. Make sure tab on threaded piece fits into one of the four notches in box. Tighten locknut. Notch A15 A16 Using splices Insert cable tie through slots on stand and box, and tighten firmly to prevent box rotation. Cable tie Trim Refer to Connecting the RTD, step A17. Caution: Health Hazard. Wash hands after contact with gel. Consult material safety data sheet VEN0046. Do not strip back the insulation on the wires to be spliced. Push wire ends completely into the splice (0.4 in/10 mm). Gently but firmly compress the yellow button into splice with pliers until the top of the button is flush with the body of the splice. Check that the wires are properly spliced by gently tugging on them. 6 / 14
A17 Connecting the RTD If the insulation at the RTD lead ends is partially or fully pre-stripped, cut off the exposed metal wire back to the intact insulation. Splice appropriate RTD leads to pigtails on board. Match colors (red to red and white to white). If RTD has a ground lead (typically green) or braid, do not connect to ground or heating cable braid. Instead, trim ground lead or braid back to cable jacket. A18 Using spring clamp style terminals This kit uses spring clamp style terminals. Terminals use a steel spring to clamp the wire to provide improved vibration resistance, reduced maintenance and faster installation. To connect wires, firmly insert a slotted screwdriver into the square hole ( ) to open the spring. When fully inserted, the screwdriver will lock into place, allowing you to remove your hand and insert the wire into the round hole ( ). Remove the screwdriver to clamp the wire. The wire is held securely against the bus bar for low contact resistance over time without the need to periodically retighten screws. Wire Refer to wiring diagram, Step A19. Push screwdriver firmly into square hole. Insert wire into round hole. Use green terminal for braid and ground wires. Screwdriver slot Wire hole Remove screwdriver. Repeat for heating cable and power wiring. 7 / 14
A19 Wiring Diagram Power to heating cable PC Board G L2 / N L1 Power supply Circuit breaker (50 A maximum) Power terminal blocks in SPC-P Heating cable L1 L2 / N G A20 Installing conduit and fittings Install conduit and fittings as shown. To minimize loosening due to vibration, use flexible conduit. Pull in power and ground wires, strip off insulation, and terminate (as shown in Step A19). This connection must be protected by a ground-fault equipment protection device. Power and ground wires 1/2" (13 mm) 3/4 in lock nut Watertight conduit seal Conduit drain Make sure conductors are not exposed. Pentair Thermal Management recommends the use of a conduit drain to prevent water condensation build-up. A21 Setting the address Set address switch to a value between 001 and 127. Ensure that no SPC units have the same address number as any other SPC or SES unit on the same PLI. Record address number and physical location to facilitate set-up with the controller. 8 / 14
A22 Stow wires in enclosure making sure they do not get caught between the lid and the box. Install lid and tighten screws. Record address number on lid in area shown. 10 For Pyrotenax MI Heating Cables WARNING: Shock and Fire Hazard. To prevent electrical hazards, ensure MI heating cable is properly grounded. All MI cables must be installed with a grounding kit which is ordered separately (MI-GROUND- KIT). Failure to use the grounding kit will void the warranty and can create a safety hazard by preventing normal operation of the ground-fault circuit breaker. B1 Insert plug (Item E) into slot in grommet through bottom of stand.
